Exactly the way I felt after reading that. My little girl is 7 months old and I could not imagine something that horrible happening to any child.

DNL - based on your posts from page 1 - you are a fucking moron and have never been around a baby. Maybe one day when a female will actually have sex with you and God forbid you have a child, you may understand how others feel regarding this situation.

"I present this case to anyone who disagrees with the death penalty. Both of these people should be summarily tied to a seat and left in a cage in a room of 80 degrees with a snow suit on... and food inches away from their grasp...

They should be killed in the most gruesome way one can imagine."

i dont see what the problem with this is
these people have obviously shown they have no respect for life, maybe experiencing the same thing they put someone else through (not to mention that that person was their own helpless infant, who couldnt do anything to protect himself) will teach them some respect for life
and even if it doesnt, maybe it'll deter other people from doing the same thing
and if it doesnt do that, well at least the fuckers will be dead

and, to address the issue of the death penalty not being a deterrant for crime - i think if people had done to them what they did to someone else, it would be a much bigger deterrant than a death that is supposed to not be cruel or unusual.

"The problem with that is that it creates "levels" of guilt which also doesn't work in our justice system. If someone doesn't confess or have DNA evidence, are they less guilty than someone else?"

there are already levels of guilt
i think you mean "levels" of punishment for identical crimes

i think part of it is that it takes FOREVER for an execution to be carried out.

there are problems with doing it quickly, but i think it would make it at least somewhat more of a deterrant.

There are not levels of guilt already, there are levels of punishment depending on extenuating circumstances. We don't have a way for someone to be guilty, but maybe they didn't do it, but we're going to lock them up anyway. This is what people who are saying if we "know" someone is guilty, it's okay to execute them. While this is true, our legal system doesn't allow us to determine the actual guilt of someone, only the concept the law uses as guilt. This is the whole problem with capital punishment. No one wants to kill innocent people, but there clearly have been, and likely are, several innocent people on death row.

It would be absurd to have a legal standing that says "guilty, but not enough to execute" is my point.

I think I may understand what you're sayin.. like OJ.. yeah he probably did that shit, but the US courts only allow for "guilty" or "reasonable doubt so innocent"... but that alone should keep innocent people from being locked up, and the degrees of murder should be enough to make sure if you are convicted of 1st degree murder, its life in prison or death by execution. In this case, they neglected a life and they should burn for it...in real life, set them on fire, burn them alive, then put them out to let them see what it feels like.. ok maybe not about that last line but the degrees of murder or misdemeanor/felony allow people to be punished less or more depending on the severity of the crime. if you sold a certain amount of drugs, you are either guilty or not, there is no in between. like murder, you did that premeditated, or you didnt, 1st degree and death, or not...or did i miss something?

shit like this happens more commonly than people think... i'm glad it's getting some news attention, maybe people will wise the fuck up and pay attention to the way the people they know are treating their children. maybe i'm a stupid hippie, but i can't see any possible reason for treating a child with anything less than love and respect. maybe some people don't feel it is their business or mine, for that matter to get involved with the way other people treat their kids, but my heart and my ethics will not allow me to blow off reporting child abuse. it starts small... and it only gets worse. i'm sure that was not the first time that baby was mistreated, and i'm sure SOMEBODY saw evidence of neglect and/or abuse before the baby was found dead. i've called social services on people, and i'll do it again in a heartbeat if MAYBE my doing so spared a child's life or protected it from the psychological damage that can come from abuse or neglect.

I mean shit I get upset with my boy sometimes. He's almost 5 and likes to push the limits. I have to raise my voice sometimes and occasionally pop him on the butt once. But NEVER could I see doing horrific shit like this to him, or his little 11-month old brother who is just starting to walk all by himself and say things like "baby" "daddy" "uh-oh" and "stinky." If these people don't get the fucking death penatly for basically torturing their own child to death, then this justice system is fucked beyond all hope.
