^ Speaking o' that, does anyone tip at Sonic? Those poor girls have to roller skate around with your food, don't they deserve a tip just as much as a barber?

you tip for service not for product.

if you don't want to tip, that's your right, but don't be surprised if it sometimes seems like you're waiting longer than you think you should to be seated for a cut, and if the person cutting your hair does whatever she can to get you out of there as soon as possible, maybe missing that section of hair that'll stick out for the next three weeks...

Also they will remember you, if you go to the same establishment, and everyone there will hope and pray that they don't get stuck having to cut your hair, because you're a complete dick

Oh yeah. I tip. I don't want them fucking up my hair next time. They probably blacklist my name if I don't tip. Damn computers.

I was just responding to the previous post that suggests all people who provide services should get tip. I provide a service and I don't get tipped. I don't tip the guy that rotates my tires. Do you?

Do you directly interact with the guy who changes your tires? The only person I ever talk to is the cashier.

Secondly, do social mores dictate that said folks should be tipped?

I don't directly interact with the busboys either but they get a % of my tip at restaurants.

But you tip the waiter/waitress, not the bus boy. Tipping out is something that's determined by the restaurant, not custom.

You're thinking way too much about this. If you have any semblance of decency, you'll tip when customary. If not, you'll be regarded as a jackass, and eventually it will bite you in the ass.

"You" defined in the general sense, not you personally.

Of course social mores dictate that said folks should be tipped. But I don't understand why a cab driver should be tipped and not a bus driver.

A tip should be for exceptional service, not used as a bribe, which is your example.

If people want to get paid more raise the prices. Don't expect a tip on a bad job.

^^ for the same reason you tip the skycap, but not the person at the checkin-counter at the airport.

^My post/example assumes good service. If you don't get good service, you should definitely not tip, or tip way less than is customary.

The added convenience of the service.

The cabbie will load and unload your bags for you. The bus driver won't. (although if you're on a shuttle from, say preflight parking, or a rental car company, they will, and you should tip.)

The skycap will check your bags for you before you even need to touch the bags that the cabbie unloaded for you so you don't have to wait in line for 30 minutes.

Ultimately, there's not one all-encompassing reason that explains tipping for every single circumstance, and it seems that a lot of people just can't grasp that. Again, people can do whatever they want... it's every individual's right. I'm one of those that believe a person's tipping habits say a lot about their character (which includes those who tip excessively solely to make oneself appear to have character)

Hmm. Alot of you that get expensive cuts sure tip alot. I went to a more expensive place for the first time last month. The cut was 30 bucks and was pretty basic, taking less than 30 minutes. I tipped 6 bucks. Should I be tipping more?

I CAN grasp that. Hence why I was arguing with the guy who tried to list one all-encompassing reason.

I seriously don't think you can grasp that. You've already stated that you tip, so why are you being an asshole? Why do YOU tip a barber? Because they might remember you and fuck up your head? Because you should? Does it fucking matter? Sounds like you're just being argumentative for the fuck of it.

i used to get 10-15 dollar man-mur or supercuts haircuts but got a real crappy one once.

my girlfriend at the time told me to go to a nicer place, I took her recommendation and I think, given that I only get my hair cut 4x a year, it is worth the $25 cut... letting someone wash and condition your hair for 10 minutes before the haircut is pretty much the best thing going, haircut wise.

anyway, $25 haircut, $5 tip. I feel OK about this.

i don't know why people who get buzz cuts would pay for haircuts. just buy a 25 dollar set of clippers (wahl makes good ones) and after 2 haircuts you've more than gotten your money's worth. either do it yourself and get a friend to trim the neckline or just get a friend to do the whole thing.

^ Ive paid to get my head buzzed down to a #2 and #3 before... 1) I don't have to clean up all that hair, and 2) it's just more convenient to let someone else do it, and do a good job on the neckline

I rarely get my hair cut or styled. Worst hair styling was for a wedding. The Maid of Honor had to do pretty much all the work, because the OLD-ASS stylist who was used to working with old people's hair had no idea how to do ringlets. (Although, if/when I get married, I'm doing the same thing, because the bright red ringlets looked awesome at the end.) The old-ass stylist then claimed she couldn't do what the Maid of Honor wanted, so Lily had to do THAT, herself, too. It was a nightmare. We would have been better off just paying Lily $20 and giving her booze, and would have gotten the same results.

Also if I haven't shaved in a while I usually get them to trim that up as well.

I tip but the haircut tips some of you are giving sound ridiculous. Especially for males.

Anyway, I'm totally against the idea of waitresses expecting tips so I dish money out according to the service and not some 15 percent "rule."

do you guys ever have a problem with waitstaff not picking up the tables of the server you let close your tab out because her shift was ending? Do they just figure that a)you're not going to start another or b)if you do, it won't be large enough to constitute a tip worth the extra work?

I recently got my first haircut in 10 years. $12 for the cut, $8 tip.

A friend of a friend used to go to a restaurant and place 10 - $1 bills on the table. He would tell the waitress that the stack of bills was her tip at the beginning of the night. Everytime he needed a drink refill or needed a condiment and she wasn't around, he would put a dollar back in his pocket. It was kind of a dick thing to do... but he always got good service.

Mary is horrified by his behavior. "

Having to pay someone extra to give good customer service when their job is customer service in the first place is more degrading.

How much do you tip movers? I have a 3 man crew coming Friday morning to move a 1 bedroom apartment. The "moving out of" apartment is up 1.5 flights of stairs and the "moving into" apartment is on the ground level.

The move is quoted to take about 3 hours, and I am paying them $135/hr.

I'd tip $60 ($20 per mover)
My movers undercharged me by 50% so I gave them a little more. You going with 2 guys and a truck?

There's a reason they call it "getting manmurdered." They cut one style there, whether you want it or not.

As for tipping, I've been going to the same guy now for almost 5 years now. When he first started out he was charging $15 working at Mitchell's, now he's up to $25 working for himself. I started tipping $5 and I'm not going up just because he charges me more. Granted I go every two week's or so, so he's making enough money off me.
