I'd choose Five Guys 4 out of 5 times over Cookout. But Cookout is okay in my book.

Five Guys for burgers and fries by a landslide. Cookout's burgers don't do it for me--not bad but merely ok. Also, I am not a fan of their buns (LOL). Their fries are pretty good but Five Guys' are great. (Though they now have multiple sizes. So you have to order the larger one to get the bag full o' fries like before.)

Cookout wins on milkshakes and cheap eats in general. Tray is still under $5--can't beat that.

If I had to pick one and only one to keep, I'd pick Cookout since there are other places to get a tasty $7 burger, though not as quickly or as convenient as Five Guys. But I'm happy with both being part of my town.

On a related note, I fucking miss Char-Grill. I'd take a 1/2 lb. charburger over anything from either place. But, not living in NC, no Char-Grill for me.

I tried Five Guys once, it was the most greasy fries I had ever had, literally the bag was soaked completely through; like others said I felt like the burger was good but not worth the price compared to Cookout's. The shakes and cajun chicken sandwiches as of late seem to be hypnotizing.

you guys must be doing Five Guys wrong. It's hands down one of the best and most consistent places for a top quality burger. and naturally cut fries always seem to be a little more "soft" than their yellow counterparts. but that's one of the reasons i enjoy them. especially with vinegar added. hell, i'm going to Five Guys today.

I prefer Cookout, but I rarely get burgers or fries there. Usually hush puppies and or onion rings.

Hah, if someone wants to buy a lunch there for me I'll take it, but I still prefer Cookout. There's no subjectiveness to a soaked through bag of fries, but come to the Five Guys in Huntersville and tell me their burger isnt mediocre or the same as Cookout.

i like five guys but if i want to get a standard burger-fries-coke, i'll get a little cheeseburger and eat the whole thing (still one of the better burgers you can get) and barely get thru a few fries before i'm full. they give you too many fries even in the smallest portion they offer. to get this trinity of food itll run you around 10 bucks or so, when i can get a lesser quality burger/sammich from cookout and enjoy their delectable sides and drink for only 5 something.

^^hmm, i wonder if it's a franchise/employee issue? The one near my office in Concord (Speedway Blvd.) is managed by a guy i went to HS with and it's always top notch.

a small fry at Five Guys is definitely enough for two people. no doubt about that.

Five Guys has better burgers, Cookout has better burgers for the money.

Other fast food burgers don't come close. It's pretty shameful how cookout's burgers are so much better than McDonalds/burger kings/whatever, but are just as cheap or cheaper.

The only thing Five Guys has over Cookout is fresh jalapenos and good hot dogs. Their food gets old fast

I've lived half a block away from a Five Guys for over 2 years and I think I've been there 4 times. If it was a Cookout I would be going once a week

Always thought Five Guys was over-rated and over-priced for what you get. Cook-Out wins every time, and it's not even close.

I see that I made a couple blanket statements with no clarification, leading to some assumptions, for that I apologize.

Let me clarify: I find the taste of Five Guys to get old, as opposed to the taste of Cookout. While Cookout does indeed have a much more robust menu, that's actually not what I was referring to. If I could only eat a cheeseburger from each place, I would grow tired of the Five Guys cheeseburger much earlier than a Cookout cheeseburger. I feel like Five Guys has a distinct fast food taste to their burger, whereas Cookout has more of a "home bbq" taste.

As for me living near a Five Guys and only going 4 times, that is the most recent 2 years of my life. I used to eat Five Guys more regularly, and have eaten there far more than the 4 times stated in the last 2 years. My point about not going there recently is because the taste of their food has become somewhat unappealing to me, for the most part.
