Bob has offended me multiple times just this past week while I've been randomly driving around chain-smoking...

Seriously, we could have him out of his job if we wanted, but we don't because who would fill his spot? I barely get Chris/Chris, and besides that, Bob and folks are the best around.

Seriously, three pages, folks? Have you listened to the alternatives?

As usual, turn it off if you don't like it. Pretty simple.

you clearly have no concept of indians or lumbees and have only listened to what hearsay ignorant people who have never bothered to learn have said. I'm no lumbee, but at least i take the time to learn.

Also, on another note I bet this entire ordeal will make the wedding a little bit awkward and for silent dinners at the table with the in-laws for a while.

you guys are high if you think this incident will get bob fired. The outrage over this issue is local for the most part (unlike the national attention that Imus got) and, for lack of a better way of putting it, it's just native americans. they don't rate high enough on the minority scale to get people fired.

not to mention that the showgram is EASILY the most profitable enterprise for clear channel raleigh. The showgram not only keeps G105 at the top of the ratings, but it is the main source of money for G105, RDU, 93.9 and 100.7. So if you think they are going to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs over something like this, you are very, very mistaken.

g105 would actually have to face the fact that playing the same 10-20 songs over and over again is something that nobody over the age of 13 wants to listen to.

The only time I listen is for the showgram

yeah, like it or not, BOB DUMAS makes mad money for Clear Channel, so he would basically have to kill a pig on the air for him to get fired. (Who gets the reference?)

I could care less, one way or the other. But, I would like this Kristen character to come sit on my face.

^^ I get the reference.

and you are right. and honestly, it might take more than that. Granted, the climate is a little different as far as what he can get by with, but the financial reality of the other stations in the cluster are FAR more important. RDU, 100.7 and 93.9 are DEAD in both ratings and money. G105 and more specifically the showgram are the top of a very thin cash mountain.

do tell where you get your information...

because...actually travis is spot on...

they got recognized by NORTH CAROLINA as the "Lumbee Tribe" in the 1880s instead of being the Croatan Tribe since the Lumbee tribes are specifically located around/and named for the area in Robeson County, N.C. on the Lumber River....and after Eisenhower passed the Lumbee Act in the 50s, the Lumbees were federally recognized as an official indian tribe....BUT they can't receive funding from the government and can never apply for it again...

you want to know why? BECAUSE THEY AREN'T TRUE INDIANS! they are a composite of white, black, and native american (probably Tuscarora..which, FYI, I partially am)....and i'm not talking about the present day Lumbees...I'm talking about the ones back in 1800 and whatever that wanted to be recognized as the Lumbee...

they made their decision to be officially called Lumbee Indians, but gave up the right for federal funding in doing so...they are not a pure tribe like the Cherokee....and if they wanted the government help the Cherokees get they would have had their asses put on a reservation so the government could take care of them...

the Cherokee are the only FEDERALLY recognized and funded tribe in the state and look where they are...but they don't want the Lumbees federally funded because that would take away their money...

none of the other 6 state recognized tribes are federally recognized at all...

and on that note...the rest of the state tribes don't like the Lumbees...just ask them...the Cherokees don't want to share their money with them...and they rest of the tribes don't want to be associated with those "trouble makers that are always begging for money and making the rest of us look bad"....and that's a direct quote from my old Coharie landlord...the Haliwas in my family will tell you something very similar...they want to do things the correct way...not by being the squeakiest wheel....

You, like most people, have taken pseudo intellectual hearsay as actual credible information. I know the information that I do because I've always had an interest in native american cultures and i dated a meherrin native girl for quite some time. i've done plenty of research on the matter.

What you say is true, in part. They are a mixed tribe. However, the so called tri-racial isolates theory has been disproven numerous times. The reason why the Lumbee aren't out on a reservation and weren't forced to take the trail of tears due to the Indian removal act because they were seen initially as "too white to be indians". This is around 1840 or so. Being a part of the east coast they had intermarried with white settlers, and some speculate had also merged with the lost colony. However, they maintained cultural traditions which is a requirement to be considered native american in the united states even to this day.

Quote :
""American Indian and Alaska Native. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America) and who maintain tribal affiliation or community attachment."[9]"

By that definition alone, they would still be viewed federally as indians. Where a lot of groups lose their indian or native american identity is when their tribe disbands. which given the history of the united states was very easy to happen to a lot of tribes. If they weren't officially accounted for, which many of these groups sought not to be out of fear of what would happen to them, their tribe was listed as disbanded. This is why the tuscarora aren't recognized even by the state of NC.

Later, as white settlers needed more land they decided that they could acquire the lands of these non-white peoples. This led to any indian that hadn't been removed being listed on the census as M, for either mulatto or mixed. Indians in many states, and definitely NC were also listed as free persons' of color regardless of any admixture of african ancestory or not. Often this led to accusations of african origins of groups because it made it easier to remove them from their land. Look at the history of the Meherrins. They lost many hundreds of acres in NC because a group of white entrepreneurs needed to land and claimed that all the Indian males had mysteriously died and subsequently all the women had married african males. All the indian males died, and all the women married only african men? Highly unlikely. But it was easier to take land, deny rights to an area, or weaken racial identity claims if that was made to appear as the case. By weakening the identity the government didn't have to give away more land to these people who weren't white when they could give it to whites. Same applies to funding.

So its not because they're not real indians, its a matter of policy.

Also, having had many friends in NASA while i was in school, i know very much so about the angst that is with the lumbees between other tribes, and its not the picture that you painted at all. Once again its a further issue that you don't understand because you really haven't cared to look into it after you had already settled on an opinion. That goes for you, and Jackleg.

****

The reason why the other tribes of the state and the lumbee have angst is the lumbee got funding and then helped push for a stricter form of standards for state and federal recognition, because that way it doesn't interfere with their funds. This is why some NC tribes can't get federal recognition although they have as much documentation as the lumbees. its not a squeaky wheel issue, by any means. most of these tribes petition time and time and time again for federal. Those that aren't state recognized also petition time and time and time again for recognition.

Also, its funny that a Haliwa said that sense they fall under the same claims of tri-racial isolates as the lumbees do, and have less back up.

i haven't settled into any sort of opinion because it doesn't affect me one way or the other...

i have done my research...mostly through personal opinion of and conversation with indians of other tribes....

hell...i know plenty of lumbees that will tell you that they are embarrassed by how their "people" behave....

i consider "opinion" of the indians i know that live this battle daily to be a lot more credible than anything I read in a book...

i'm a tobacco farmer...and i have been all my life...so has the rest of my family...

i would hope somebody would believe what i have to say about it...history, processes, struggles, lifestyle, etc....before they would believe something they read in a library/online written by a researcher...

i would also hope they would value the opinion/anecdotes of the people that are too busy living the life and working at it to be in what boils down to activists (and i don't mean that word negatively) groups promoting the "good" while strategically hiding the "bad" for their personal benefit....

here i am comparing the NASA to something akin to the Tobacco Growers Association...

I'm sorry did you miss the part where I said I had many friends who were in NASA and dated a meherrin? I assure you have had at least equal contact with the groups as you, and also much of what I learned was from conversations and then followed it up by learning through documentation. I prefer not to take everything I hear as fact, and proceed to look for documenting evidence. regardless, what does being a tobacco farmer have to do with any of it. There are plenty of people whos families were tobacco farmers and they don't know shit about native groups. I'd bet you any amount of money that if were were to survey each child of a tobacco farmer at NC State they'd have very little collective knowledge of the issue. Your comments here get less sound and less valid as they go on.

Quote :

Yeah, because the group of native american students which make up the native american student association have nothing to do with living the life nor anecdotal experience. please reference my comment about less sound and less valid before going further.

i got a form email reply from Randi West @ Clear Channel (g105) to my angry email that i sent. she also addressed my reply personally:

The answers are ALOT of people....my email crashed 3 times and yes I have retained every email sent and the showgram will have access to see them."

success! i'm impressed that so many people wrote in. anyone who works tech knows that crashing email on an average of once per day is a big deal

This is such a double standard......

comedians can get on stage and say some of the most racist and/or sexist shit, and it's hilarious (it really is, this is just for the sake of arguing).....with the exception of Kramer of course

i don't understand how people can get so worked up over simple remarks on a COMEDY show.

about the "comedy show" thing.

people pay to see a comedy show and thus subject themselves to it.

radio is a service everyone has free access to and is regulated by a very stern government body.

thus why this shit isnt going to fly because being fined thousands of dollars by the FCC is bad business.
