sounds like there's some confusion about homosexual vs. bisexual. this chart kind of spelled it out for me.

10 - totally homosexual, no attraction to opposite sex

5 - totally bisexual, equal attraction to both sexes

1 - totally heterosexual, no attraction to same sex

most people fall somewhere between 2 and 9 here. what about anne heche? probably somewhere in the middle range of this continuum. and evan makes the [imo] strongest point about nature vs. nurture, which is - whyinhell would anyone choose to be gay?

if you're in the bisexual range, sure, you can make a choice about which way you want to go, but in that case you are still stifling a part of yourself. and it makes a big big difference if you're doing it as part of a monogamous relationship - making it the same as any other person in a monogamous relationship, or if you have just decided to limit relations to one gender for another reason.

^x6 I assume you are referring to the Kinsey Scale. Its accuracy aside, I would say that it makes a strong case for a significant amount of choice occurring in sexuality.

Look at it closely.

evan-

i wouldn't do it because it could mess up the awesome friendship you guys have. Plus it might bring up old feelings from the relationship and have one of you wanting more and the other one not.

Evan, it's strong of you that you've made clear your position in this discussion.

The question now is (since a relationship is a relationship), how much do you value your current friendship? There appears to be no way that two people can coexist in such a sexual relationship that there is no intimate emotional relationship. Between the two of you, there's already a relation in friendship and there's no changing this. It would seem to me that a small alteration of adding an intimate sexual experience to a friendship would be no major change, as long as it would not interfere with such activities as you both already share and both of you ensure it as such.

Then again, I prefer not to share a relationship where I care about anyone on a level of survival than mine. Perhaps it was past trauma that made this so. I do not want to see the innocent die, but to make sure the evil have a quick removal from Earth is not past me.

Perhaps I should lay off the spirits.

You're young so use the person just like a straight guy who wants "just sex" would use a girl.

what makes you say that? some sort of evidence that suggests that "most" people are at least a little attracted to the same sex? i think most women would agree that women are "prettier" than men, so does that count? i can honestly say that i have no attraction to other men whatsoever...but, from my understanding, a significant percentage of heterosexual women have had a lesbian experience at some point in their lives, and i'm betting that number's a lot higher than the number of heterosexual men who have had a homosexual experience (but then, that might be due to the stigma attached to it)

*shrug*...gay men don't bother me in the least (though i can't for the life of me understand what's attractive about another man)...i've had two gay roommates, and, all things considered, they've been my favorites

gay jokes aside....if you still have feelings for the person that are more than 'fuck buddies' then i'd say its a bad idea and avoid the situation. You'll just be setting yourself up to get hurt.

This has been a very interesting thread, i dont think evan if bluffing although he would be a good conartist if he has been the whole time. A few comments, questions.

1. I personally don't have sex with friends, ive tried it, it ended badly cuz i caught feelings and he was shitty friend to me anyways. But since that is over I kinda lost all of our mutual friends which sucks. But you would know if you'd catch feelings for him in which case its a bad idea, but do you know if he'll catch feelings for you? is he trying to get back in or is he just hard out for some sex?

2. Where is bicurious on the kinsey scale?

3. evan your random song comments crack me up, I GOT ME SOME BATHING APES, rotflmao for 5 minutes in my office

4. evan how are you from wilmington and remember exhilarama???

has anyone ever done any research on homosexuality in more of a historical (v. scientific) context? we touched on it a tiny tiny bit in a few of my college history classes (w/ ancient rome. and greece, too). just seems interesting considering i feel like a lot of people view it as a more modern issue AND because the bible is the defining authority on homosexuality even though it was prevalent in a lot of different civilizations and religions both before AND after the birth of christ.

hmmm. someone write me a research paper.

that wasn't meant as serious. it is meant as in ask a person why they don't believe in homosexuality or why they are against answer = religion. and probably = the bible.

^ yes yes. i meant it is what people use to justify their hatred of homosexuality even though it has been around the block a time or two. hence my talk about before/after the birth of christ.

it should probably say "authority". my bad yo.

I have to disagree with the above description of bisexuals.

There are three sexual orientations of women:

Lesbian
Bi-Sexual
Straight

And there are three sexual orientations of men:

Gay
Gay
Straight

If you are a man and you like to put penis in your mouth, you are gay.

Why this double standard, you ask? It's very simple. Being a "bi-sexual" man involves much more of a philosophical committment than being a bi-sexual woman. Bi-sexual woman: all you have to do is kiss and lick and touch and stuff. There's no real evidence left after the fact. It's pretty much all the same stuff a guy might do, without the penis action. As a "bi-sexual" man, you have to deal with putting someone else's PENIS inside of you and the stuff that shoots out of it.

Long after your experience is done, you still have semen inside one of your orfices. This is not something that you can just shrug off and go back to liking girls.

There is no such thing as a bi-sexual man. Perhaps a whore that will drop a load wherever he can, but if he's gone so far as to try penis, and will try penis again, he's gay.

Of course, there are exceptions, but they are farther and fewer between than is worth risking.

Speaking of risk, which sexual orientation of men do you think is most responsible for transmission of HIV into the heterosexual female population? (Hint: "heroin dealer" is not a sexual orientation.)

not necessarily

I mean, I had a friend who had dated a number of men but hadn't ever gotten to the sexual stage with any of them except for one of his boyfriends blowing him once: so just by receiving a blowjob, he's gay? Other than that, he had done nothing but a lot of kissing. He dated some more, found a girl and ended up marrying her. His view on sexuality is much more restrained than what you're automatically jumping to. He's definitely bi, not gay.
