I'm pretty sure those exposed bricks will clash with any backsplash

So what is that counter top made of? Looks like either concrete or maybe quartz, but I can't tell for sure from the small pics.

I just bought a nice used concrete counter top to use on my island. Fifteen dollar, make you hollar. I need to get a wet saw and cut it though....It's too long. Width is perfect.

It's corian.

I did not want a tile backsplash, never really thought about adding one, and anywhere we could have ended it - either at the edge of the wall, at the pass-through, or edge of the last cabinet would have been very awkward.

Ahhh...cool. I have one or two Corian cutting boards. I don't really use them as much because they dull my knives, but they look nice and can be used as heat pads to protect the counters too.

yo ambrosia! we're getting shit done over here!!!!

next time we'll take the cabinets down so we can put up a white tile backsplash behind the counters. and clean up the edging of the blue around the cabinets.

in short, the walls ended up getting stripped, spackled, scraped and then respackled. we then took a large scrub brush and created stroke patterns in the spackle to hide imperfections.

(pictures linked once again to avoid taking over your kitchen glory!)

Here are 2 pictures of the kitchen/dining room of the house I am about to buy.

When I get some extra money I am thinking about either putting tile down or hardwood flooring.

laminate would be cheaper and still look decent. Especially if you're handy enough to lay it yourself (which if you can build a doghouse and work a saw you pretty much are).

True. I have thought about doing that also. I am trying to figure out what to do in the living room also.

One thing I will definitely do is add a nice mantel over the fireplace. It also needs to be cleaned too but I don't know what to use to clean it with that won't combust when I use the fireplace

Note: The furniture in the photos are the previous owners. I am buying new living room and dining room furniture. I will post pics of what I am getting in a few minutes.

^^ did you really get that couch? OMG, I sat on it in the store and about fell asleep. Now I'm trying to talk my roomie into it.

Step one: Show it to her...comming soon.

I'm just wanting it to go on sale...*daydreaming*

I am in the process of buying it. I have to finance it partially and my Realtor doesn't want me to do anything that would screw up my credit before i buy the house.

I am getting the furniture from Rooms to Go. I was going to get some from Ashley Furniture but it would take them 2 months to get it to me....Rooms to Go would be 1 week at the latest. I also got my sleigh bed from R2G 3 years ago.

StayPuff, on that house you are about to buy, did you pull up a corner of the carpet in the living room to see if there is hardwood under it

Not yet. Even if it isn't hardwood underneath, I am pretty good with stuff like this.

If it has floor vents just pull one of those out and you can see under the carpet around it. If you pull the carpet up at a corner it will be tough to get it stretched back onto the tack strip properly.

That's ok. I just don't like furniture as dark as that though.

I am worried that my cats will have fun scratching up the new furniture

I like the detail on the table you posted. Depends on the size of the space you are putting it in, but I'm sure it would look great.

I think that's what I like about the one I posted...is that it is darker. I have a lighter colored one now (that has a textured material) and it's great for dirt and wear. Doesn't show much at all. I just don't like it and want to get rid of it. It's only 2 years old and I was in grad school the last two years and never really used it at all.

I also have an entire wood bedroom set (dresser, night stand, bed) that I hate. 2 years old...hehe

I do like my dining room table and coffee table, and I won't part with it

well I have a sleigh bed and will have the furniture that i posted earlier when i move into the new house. I have to fill out the rest of my house with stuff from craigslist.

I have 2 entertainment centers but they are both old and big. I would rather have a taller entertainment center than wide like I have now.

I love the really high cabinet vs going with a soffit or unusable top of cabinet area. Very elegant, I love it.

thanks, it's taken a lot of time/money/patience (as does a lot of things with an old house), but when it's all said and done it's an investment that you can enjoy for years to come.

ok, so our kitchen remodeling wasn't as extreme. we're honestly just making the place look as nice as possible without investing a ridiculous amount of money, since we plan on moving in 5 years or so.

we double covered the window with darkening blinds and a pull down shade after we realized how much the afternoon sun bakes the room. we cut out a breakfast bar in the wall. we removed 4 layers of wallpaper, then we spackled the walls (too damaged to paint directly), textured them and painted them (as well as the lower walls and all the trim). we built a pantry in the water heater closet. we got a portable dishwasher. and we replaced the faucet.
today we took the cabinets down to put the tile panels up, and installed a microwave above the stove. we also installed a light above the sink.
all that's left is to get a new (larger) fan and to get a nicer light fixture for the area around the counters. and to get a curtain rod and valance.

before and afters:

this is SORT OF related. i needed a thread and couldn't find any on bathrooms. plus, searching for bathroom on this site leads to bad things. couple old bathroom threads in the lounge but more intense than what i'm doing.

i'm painting and updating our bathroom (like the one my brother and i use when we are home).

my parents don't want to retile right now but i think i can make the old tile work. it is dated (color...it is like off white/cream...80s) BUT i think painting, molding, and updating the light fixtures, tp roll, faucet, light switch covers, etc will REALLY help. replacing the countertop on the vanity would probably make it perfect (w/o retiling) but they don't want to do that yet. sidenote: i am trying to convince them to get rid of all brass fixtures in our house (door knob handles, etc, but we have a lot of it and they like it).

right now our bathroom has nickel shower rod and towel rods, but for some reason my parents just stop half way through things and think it is fine. i'm like, brass and nickel. no...pick one. and not the brass.

i will have to take pictures because our bathroom is hideous right now and i'm hoping when i'm done it will be 100 times better.

i want to paint vertical stripes (thick, obviously). has anyone done this before? i'm going to look at paint tomorrow. my parents got 2 swatches, but they are green and i don't really care for it. i will look at green but i'm leaning toward yellows just because of the tile color.
