there was teacher at my high school that got involved with a student but I don't know if that was ever reported bc there would have been such hoopla about it. It might not have mattered because he was 18 when they were doing it in the back of the bus after football games. She did resign shortly after football season.

actually, punchmonk, i believe in the case that i posted about, the kid was over the age of consent

but in § 14-27.7(b) of the NCGS it says

so looks like even if the student is 18, if the teacher is over 22, then there's a problem if they aren't married.

V FykalJpn pointed out VERBAGE i didn't notice before, so, yeah, it looks like teachers and students are felonious, even if they're the same age.

this part can stay about the class G felony, however:

its the lowest level of felony, though, like 3-4 months in prison is the biggest sentence for someone with no real record, maybe 8 months is the max for someone with priors

the kid in the case i linked, it looks like he was 16.

I think this has become more prevalent since teachers can more slyly communicate with their students through the use of text messaging (common theme) and the internet. it has probably always been a desire of teachers but the ease in accomplishing the task was notably more difficult and thus was dismissed more than carried out.

in the cases where it did happen i think it never came to light as much because there weren't cell phones which provided call histories, text messages, and in some cases graphic photographs that are used as the bulk of the evidence in these cases.

i can't really say i'm surprised as i know a few teachers (especially this one set of roommates) who are hypersexualized and i could see being in a similar situation one day. the only thing that surprises me is the large frequency of infidelity associated with these, and not the rate of action. Another thing that surprises me is the frequency in which the woman is the aggressor. sure, there are more female teachers so that isn't all too odd, but given what we've been led to believe about the male sex driven brain you would think there would be more men getting themselves in this situation. My guess is that the women assume they can get away with it while the men know their ass would get nailed to the wall.
