we'll see? if you bothered to look at the shit you're trying to talk about, you would have already seen. just a couple of examples
Navy put up 403 yards on BC in the 2006 bowl game Navy put up 343 yards on Maryland in the 2005 (oh yeah, the "normal" offense state ran that year put up a whopping 186 yards)
and remember that year when State was really good and smoked Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl? yeah, well that happened to be PJ's first year at Navy. he had taken over a team that had gone 1-20 in the prior two years. when Navy played Notre Dame that year, the offense put up 56 less yards than Rivers/McClendon/Cotchery did 2 months later.
that's with a team of nobodies and an offensive line that usually weighs 50 lbs less than the defensive line on average

hey check it out, i can pick two games that support my cause, too.
zero points against rutgers in 2006. 42-10 loss to tulane in 2004.
what do you want? i'm saying that i don't think it'll work, but i might be wrong, we'll see when they play and you're coming back and saying that i'm definitely wrong and am an idiot. alright man.
and by the way, every game you referenced was a loss. 8/14/2008 10:20:26 PM |

yes...and navy SHOULD lose to teams like BC, ND, and UMD every single time they play. you seem to not grasp the fact that the athletes at Navy probably wouldn't even play on top 1AA teams
in 2006, our starting QB had his knee blown out (ACL.MCL, etc) in the Rutgers game...a true sophomore came in and replaced him after having never played a college game before...i know there's no way in hell you watched that game, but the team just shut down after that
as far as that tulane game is concerned...Navy played like shit all together...but it was good you pointed out a game from the year navy went 10-2 and PJ won the Bobby Dodd coach of the year award

that's funny...you know in 1913 some upstart catholic school in Indiana used the forward pass and demolished the powerhouse army team 35-13 when everyone else in the country thought the forward pass was a gimmick
better yet, how many programs ran a spread offense 10 years ago? now we have national champions, ACC champions, BCS bowl winners, etc running it

the triple option works because its seen so rarely and you only have about one week to prepare for it. If you saw that every week, you'd destroy it. WHICH IS WHY when dinosaurs were still getting boners they actually invented passing. i like the trickery, but it works now because no one is doing it and defenses don't actually practice against it. 5/7/2009 12:47:27 PM |

I remember wondering at the time State hired TOB whether they'd eventually catch hell for passing on PJ.
FWIW, I'm not surprised at all that PJ had success in his first season at Tech. The guy has won everywhere he's coached. For pete sake the guy turned around NAVY, and Navy was a complete fucking joke of a program. Yet some people wondered whether the triple option would work in a BCS conference? Really? Maybe if it was the SEC I'd question it. But in the ACC?
Thing is, and I hate defending Fowler (truly I do), but you can't pass on TOB. Period. He's a proven head coach in Division 1 like PJ @ Navy, but he did it at a school with a far tougher schedule. He also faced an equally tough recruiting situation (Academic standards, lackluster BC fanbase, it's fucking COLD in Boston, etc).
Bottom line: PJ was a very attractive option, but TOB was the proven commodity. Game, set, match. TOB FTW
(Besides we're going to kick some serious ass this year so no one will give a damn about passing on PJ anyway) 5/8/2009 8:38:05 AM |

I grossly underestimated PJ this season only giving him 3 wins, but man, i'll take kicking the shit out of UNC on the road rather than the other way around.
I think if GT continues to bring in high quality players like Nesbitt and Dwyer then the triple option will have success, but you see exactly what happens when Nesbitt gets hurt and you throw the back up to the wolves.
I think Russell Wilson would have been perfect for PJ's option offense, but then again, russell wilson would probably make any offense look good.

I don't think you meant this statement as a comparison to PJ, I mean, recruiting woes of BC versus trying to pick football players out of naval officers?

^ What he said. Yes "equally challenging" was a poor choice of words. "Similarly challenging" would be much accurate, b/c both jobs are tough for different reasons.
Navy obviously isn't going to bring anything close to top tier talent. Your limited basically to figuring out a good scheme, instilling hardcore discipline (not as big of a problem, being Navy and all), and outcoaching your opponent. This is exactly what PJ did, and for that reason I figured the guy would succeed given the chance.
BC is a different story. the talent BC fans expect you to be Notre Dame (well, USED to be anyway) the same way State fans expect their bball coach to be UNC or Duke. You gotta win and be nationally relevant... despite
-having higher academic standards -being at a small college in a major city with FOUR pro teams - having a woefully small talent pool in the surrounding area - getting underpaid, underappreciated, and criticized for not treating it like a "destination school"
IMO both PJ and TOB are damned good coaches for these reasons... 5/8/2009 9:37:43 PM |

Found it:
http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/your-atlantic-division-favorite
Quote : | "Yeah, it's N.C. State.
The Wolfpack has the best quarterback in the conference, two NFL-level game-changers on defense and a smart coach.
Technically, State finished last in the division in '08 but it was only one game behind the winner (Boston College). All six teams finished either 5-3 or 4-4.
Expect the same competitiveness this season. Which means you pick the team with the best QB (his right knee willing) and eight home games.
Consider the alternatives:
— Florida State
Probably will take the preseason media vote because, well, they always do, but the Noles are a hot mess.
Running back Antone Smith (792 yards, 15 TDs) carried that offense last season and he's gone.
Maybe Greg Paulus will play receiver because among the (annual?) offseason transgressions, the Noles lost five receivers to the police blotter/waiver wire. A sixth, Taiwan Easterling, ruptured his Achilles.
Scary that FSU only lost one defender to the NFL (rush end Everette Brown), and the Noles will be good on defense, but don't underestimate the loss of kicker Graham Gano.
If Marcus Sims doesn't fumble on the goal line, FSU beats Georgia Tech and wins the Atlantic, and probably the ACC title. If that happens, Gano, not Wilson, is the league's MVP.
— Maryland
Is there any good reason to believe the Terps will break the cycle of mediocrity they're in?
(Aside: Consensus says Oakland took Maryland receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey way too soon in the NFL Draft. Agreed. But what about the teams (all 32?) that had Hey-Bey ahead of UNC's Hakeem Nicks on their draft board? Insanity.)
— Wake Forest
The Deacs' offense will better in quarterback Riley Skinner's seventh season as the starter — it has to be.
Not the defense, though. I'd take Jim Grobe over any coach in the ACC but as a program, Wake's simply not to the point where it can lose talent like Aaron Curry (fourth overall pick) and Alphonso Smith (second-round pick) and replace it without taking a step back.
With Grobe, it won't get much worse than 6-6 but this is not another Orange Bowl team.
— Clemson
Let's face it, Clemson's broke. They had to buyout Tommy Bowden and they couldn't afford another coach. Hence, Dabo Swinney.
Given the fiscal environment, that's commendable but look at what has happened almost every time an ACC program has hired an inexperienced coach.
The ACC is not the place for on-the-job training. Look at how much further along UNC and N.C. State are with established head coaches who know how to manage a coaching staff and understand what it takes to build a program.
This is not going end well for Clemson. Maybe not 3-9 bad, or no-bowl bad but it's not going to end with a division title either.
— Boston College
The Eagles defied the odds in '08. And I'll be the first to admit I was wrong about that.
But another coaching transition? This one without Matt Ryan at quarterback or two NFL defensive linemen? Or without an innovative playcaller like Steve Logan?
BC won't fall completely off the map (yet), the schedule won't let them, but the post-O'Brien hangover will truly hit the Heights this season. " |
