oh there's a fuckton of crazy, too...but part of that is just that it's a very populous state.
I'm not saying it's flawless...I'm saying there's a whole lot to like about it. Nowhere near last. Easily top half, probably top 10. 11/13/2018 12:22:13 AM |

Florida, similarly to CA and TX, could really be 3 states. West FL (Tallahassee and west) is markedly different from North FL (Jacksonville, Orlando, maybe Tampa) and South FL (Maybe tampa and south, to include Miami and Ft. Lauderdale) All three of those have very different economic and social demographics. 11/14/2018 5:49:05 AM |

Kansas and Nebraska need to be on this list, but so does Mississippi, Arkansas, and I'd even toss in Arizona to round out a top 5. 11/14/2018 2:32:14 PM |

Arizona has the Grand Canyon and Sedona/Red Rocks. I think Scottsdale and Flagstaff are pretty decent, too. No way it's the worst. Prob not even bottom 10. I'm thinking more like mid-pack or close to it.

^^ visiting Arizona isn’t anything like actually living there. It’s hell on earth during the summer, which lasts from early May until late September. The GC is cool the first few times you see it, but it doesn’t make up for how shitty the rest of the state is. It’s by far the worst state west of the Rockies, and it’s not even close. 11/15/2018 12:33:34 AM |

but Flagstaff, tho
good amount of the state isn’t in the desert/hell on earth during the summer

I've seen enough shows and movies, and have read enough articles about the Ozarks to think that Missouri should also be included. I realize other states have the Ozarks as well, but they've already been listed. 11/15/2018 10:33:51 AM |

^^ not where people actually LIVE and work (i.e Phoenix metro, Tucson to a lesser extent)
I get it. Arizona is a cool place to visit and it's really different from anything back east. But as a place to live, it fucking sucks. It's a weird mix of religious people, gun nuts, snow birds from the Midwest, and the minority groups all hate each other (Latinos/Natives/Blacks).
NV is a better place to live (even Vegas has more to offer than Phoenix in terms of culture/entertainment), Utah is a better place to live (even if it's super weird and Mormon), New Mexico is a better place to live. 11/15/2018 11:03:37 AM |
theDuke866 All American 52894 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah, i'll agree with that to an extent...much of the state is a good place to visit, but less so to live. I'll also agree that, of the states from the Rockies west, it would be toward the bottom of the list--maybe at the bottom of that list (NV, to me, isn't very appealing other than Las Vegas is...Las Vegas.) FWIW, I lived in Yuma for about 2-2.5 months, so I have at least a taste of AZ beyond visiting for a few days.
I'm not saying it's top 10 or anything. I'm not saying it's not surrounded by better places. I'm just saying there's no way it's #50. 11/15/2018 4:09:23 PM |

Northern NV has Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley, and while Reno isn't great, I'd still take it over Phoenix any day.
And yeah, AZ isn't the worst state in the Union, but personally I'd throw it in the top 5 just because I hate it so much on a deeply personal level
I've been to every state besides the Dakotas, VT, and Maine, but fuck KS/NE/MS to death. 11/15/2018 4:40:40 PM |

Oh yeah, forgot about Tahoe straddling into NV. I always think of that as CA, since when I was there I stayed in Truckee and skied Squaw and (I think) Northstar.
I drove there from Fallon via Reno. I thought Reno was pretty much a dump. __________________________
South Dakota vastly exceeded my admittedly low expectations. Go check that place out. I haven't done ND yet. It's not on the way to anything, and there's no obvious reason to go there for its own sake, other than the fact that it's there.
I haven't done Maine (or NH or RI--I kick myself now for driving from P-town out on Cape Cod to Hartford, and not taking the route through RI). I also need to do Minnesota, Alaska, and Hawaii...I think that's it, off the top of my head.) I'm in the process of buying a pretty serious traveling airplane; dad and I have already talked about taking my daughter on a long-weekend trip from RDU-OBX (Wright Bros memorial), then up the east coast, out by Cape Cod, maybe stop in Nantucket or somewhere for a few hours, and then up to Maine. Hang around Maine for half a day or something, then over to Niagara Falls, then back down to RDU to drop dad off. 11/15/2018 7:18:34 PM |

Since we're on topic of Appalachia, I have a question:
Growing up, I always pronounced the Appalachian mountains as "ap-uh-latch-un" and I still do. But I've also pronounced the poor/podunk/undesirable part of the country (Appalachia the region, not mountain range) as "a-puh-lay-shi-a", and I thought everyone else did too, but apparently this is wrong?
Please, I have a match. 11/21/2018 4:30:49 PM |

Now that I think of it, I don't think I've ever met anyone in person who actually claims they're from "Appalachia"- they just say they're from the mountains, NC, TN, or whatever part of the state they're from, so maybe that's why this is confusing to me.
Given that I only really ever hear the term "Appalachia" used either in academic conversations or on the news to blame ignorant white people, I can see why I hadn't noticed this before. Thanks. 11/21/2018 4:40:23 PM |

A lot of early hate for South Carolina in this thread. As someone who was born and grew up in NC but now lives and works in SC, I'm here to tell you it's pretty much the same, both the bad and the good, historical differences notwithstanding. The Upstate and the Blue Ridge Escarpment areas are not bad at all.
My vote is for Florida. What redeeming qualities does it have? 9/11/2022 9:24:44 AM |
