Seriously, people make mistakes. Don't penalize her to the point where she fails out.
8/21/2008 4:34:43 PM
I would have given the student a zeroIt's not fair to students who did original, decent work if she gets a good grade on the assignment AND has more time to complete it now
8/21/2008 4:35:45 PM
A question for the OP:Do you select random parts of every essay you are submitted and run them through google?
8/21/2008 4:38:25 PM
As a TA, I frequently encountered such things. One guy copied and pasted from Wikipedia and didn't even bother to remove the edit brackets and formatting from the Web site. I wasn't in charge of the class, but if I had been, some students would have received warnings and big fat zeros. And if anything of the sort had happened again, I would have taken action in accordance with policy. This shit is one big reason society doesn't value the college degree in the same way anymore. Cheaters are hurting us all, folks. And I agree with ambrosia1231:

maybe she meant to add the proper citations?Doubt it, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. You should burn her at the stake.

yeah far to lenient. she definitely should've at LEAST gotten a zero (if not negative). she's going to tell all her friends what a push-over you are... she needs to wake up and realize college isn't her middle of nowhere high school.I'm walls1441 and i approved this message.

I think it was a good call. Awesome that you COPY AND PASTED MY WORDS "A STERN WARNING" WITHOUT CITING "So one of my students just submitted a paper. 21 August 2008. bethaleigh. http://www.thewolfweb.com." But anyway... ... I mean, if it had happened later in the semester after other papers had been done, I would have said go with a harsher punishment. But the first assignment deserves a warning.

A couple of my friends told me about this one particular English professor that would some how know about your past papers and would accuse you of plagarising your own work...

^^^ "really long" like a paragraph or "really long" like two pages?[Edited on August 21, 2008 at 11:43 PM. Reason : ^ I could see that if you had written papers for other professors and they shared that information.]

This is a shitty situation. You don't want to adversely affect someone's life in any extreme way.But cheating is bad and wrong. It's not fair to the students who aren't cheating to tolerate it from some people. And some other people are really good at cheating and will never get caught so it's almost not fair to punish the people who suck at it and do get caught. If I was a professor, I would just make it really, really clear what the consequences are from the start and enforce the consequences. There are kids all tangled up with student conduct for smoking weed. Cheaters should get the same shit.[Edited on August 22, 2008 at 2:16 AM. Reason : I hate cheating.]

Is that the letter she sent you? Is english her second, or perhaps third, language? She doesn't belong in college. People like her are making me go to graduate school so I can prove I am not retarded.
8/22/2008 2:09:46 PM
As much as I think you should bitchslap her because she should know better at this point, there is a possibility she really doesn't get it. You may want to explain to her what exactly plagiarism means, because it sounds like she thinks that if she does the same thing she did and cites her sources, that's fine.[Edited on August 22, 2008 at 2:13 PM. Reason : heh]
8/22/2008 2:13:15 PM
I had a similar situation last year. Granted, I teach high school but I wanted to give the kid a 0. His parents kept telling me it wasn't plagiarism even though i had the print out right next to the kid's paper. I ended up just taking away citation points, but in college, you should know better. Ignorance of the rules doesn't mean you get to break them. Everyone knows they're supposed to cite work that's not original.[/rant]
