Fox News probably does seem pretty heavily biased when you're dumb enough to think DailyKos and huffingtonpost aren't biased 10/16/2008 12:18:55 PM |

you don't think it's a problem that a majority of Fox News viewers continue to believe that 1) we found WMDs in Iraq, and 2) Saddam Hussein was linked to 9/11? The amount of Fox News viewers who believe these falsehoods are much higher than any other network or news source 10/16/2008 1:35:16 PM |

^^you're wrong as usual
and please try to stay focused on the thread topic, which is Fox News, instead of shitting all over the thread like you normally do
^and? how did they "cause problems" with the "Iraq War"? how did a tv station directly impact the Iraq War?
I mean CNN and other liberal stations continuously aired how we had lost the war and victory was impossible, but I don't think those things directly had an effect on the war either

I responded directly to the thread. You stated that people who call fox news biased, don't see the bias in DailyKos and the Huffingtonpost, I stated that we acknowledge the slant of those organizations. Then, you called me obtuse.

In fairness, MSNBC is slanted to the left just like Fox is slanted to the Right. I don't believe it is slanted as far to the left as Fox is slanted to the Right, and MSNBC for awhile there was attempting to be FoxNews lite, it has only gone left int he past two years or so. 10/16/2008 1:42:59 PM |

It isn't a big deal that the news outlets are slanted. It is a big deal that none of them will do any of their own journalism. Both sides are nothing more than hype machines and lagging indicators of whatever happens to be going on at the time. It is sad that Fox News doesn't do anything at any point in time to lay the facts bare about the real affiliation of Obama with Ayers, rather, they just echo what the campaign is saying at the rally speeches and then has their good looking dead behind the eyes commentators argue back and forth about pointless shit. Both sides engage in shoddy reporting and generally do a disservice to this country. I can only fathom that none of them want to do any real heavy reporting against either party/candidate because they'll get cut off from access to the officials once they get in office. That's the real disservice.
Why whine about any outlet being slanted, the people that tune into Fox News already have politics that align with FNC, same for CNN/CNBC, etc. I'd like to see a MSM organization operating similar to factcheck.org. If they could do it in a fashion that wasn't complete boring, I think they could survive. 10/16/2008 2:20:01 PM |

It's a sad fact, but people overwhelmingly prefer things that reinforce their own preexisting beliefs and conclusions. True facts that do not support one's existing concept of reality are often ignored regardless of their validity. The resulting cognitive dissonance when the new facts are not ignored can often serve to cause a defensive reinforcement of the existing beliefs and creation of a delusional state in which the facts can be explained away.
This means that if you disagree with Fox News and think they're making things up or slanting them, it doesn't really matter. If they showed things in a way which you 100% agreed with then those who no longer agreed with them would:
1) Turn to other even more agenda driven online news sources. 2) Delude themselves in order to protect their version of reality.
The same goes for networks like CNN and MSNC et al. The only effect of forcing everyone to watch your version of reality (true or not) would be either to force them into delusional states where they would explain away the new information or to force them to seek out information they did agree with. The only way around this is to ensure that all information sources agree and are unbiased- which would require some orwellian nightmare that is far worse than "The Nation" magazine or Fox News.
Here's a study showing how this works: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080924-does-ideology-trump-facts-studies-say-it-often-does.html
Really cool stuff. Ghost in the Shell fans might recognize some of the ideas here too.

Rachel Maddow's apparently kicking ass right now
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/21/arts/television/21madd.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
Quote : | "“I’m pinching myself,” said Phil Griffin, the president of MSNBC, who used to caution that it “takes two or three years for a show to find its audience.” That was certainly true for Keith Olbermann, whose five-year-old “Countdown” program at 8 p.m. (which leads into Ms. Maddow’s program) now beats CNN in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic segment every evening.

I think the point FNC was trying to make was that the Democrats wanted to let the economy suffer to show the voters that McCain/Republicans can not lead this nation to a turnaround.
I saw that this morning and then CNN had a bit on it as well.
