Its...usable? Dunno what you're asking for. The speed of using wifi vs data connection is probably comparable if you have good signal for both. I don't go out of my way to connect to wifi networks when they're available, but being able to access the internet while in a car (not driving...usually ) is pretty awesome. I put google maps on my phone, but I'm still trying to figure out the GPS so it can track my position on the fly. Right now it puts a dot on where I am, but in a car the dot doesn't move.

On my Diamond I have 4GB, but I don't know about if it can take microSD. Looking behind the cover and on the phone I don't see any slots, so it seems like it doesn't. Whenever we tried to buy some from the Alltel stores they would ring it up, then realize I had a Diamond and they'd be all "Oh, that has internal memory, you don't need this"

^ The touch diamond has a microSD slot. Pull of the back cover. It's there.

i'm going to get a htc touch pro.

i don't want to add a data plan becaues i don't want my plan to increase... i should be fine just accessing wifi networks though, right?

htc recently announced the touch pro2 and diamond2 - with the diamond supposedly coming out in 2Q and the touch pro in 3Q

having a smart phone without being able to get online via the data plan would really suck in my opinion - most of the times i need/want to be online with my phone is when i'm nowhere near a wifi network

unless you pay full retail and only use wifi and no phone, alltel will most likely stick you on a smart choice plan.

i'm eligible for an upgrade and contract extension...
what is a smart choice plan?

and question..my wife isn't eligible for an upgrade until next year even though we are on the same plan...
will my upgrade cancel hers out? or can she still get it next year also?

basically alltel's smart phone plan. cheapest plan is 89.99 for 500 min and costs $20 to add a line for a regular phone and 40 for another smartphone.

So I just got a Touch Pro today, 150$ after rebate Its with sprint (sero 500 ftw!). Any recommendations on what I should first do to improve performance? I've been trying to read some of the stuff on ppcgeaks.com but its a bit overwhelming. I'm looking for like step by step advice on what I should do first. Anyone have any help, or links to help?

^ Performance how? Is there some specific functionality that you're looking for? Mine seems to behave well enough out of the box.

^^ I forget what the rA means. It's in the PDF manual that's on the disk that came with the phone. I leave the data connection on. There's no adverse effect of doing so. However, because of the battery drain, I only turn on Wi-Fi when I need to use it.

rA stands for Rev-A - basically it denotes that you're in an area that has the fastest available data connection

Battery life, speed of going through the menus, that sort of stuff. I unlocked it and flashed it to a custom rom (mighty mouse) and it seems to be ALOT faster. It also has added some new program and a few other minor changes (cleaning up the menu).

What I really want to find now is a program that will add gestures, specifically to close out a program. There has to be a quicker way to close out a program then pulling out the stylus and xing out of it at the top.

Yeah it seems to be improved with MightyMouse. I just wasn't getting a good response time with it before. Next thing I'm trying to figure out how to improve is the contacts list. Does anyone know of a different contact list program? I don't like the look of the stock one.

Have you modified it at all? I've been getting better battery life with Mightymouse. Most of the custom roms will help improve it.

Loving this phone so far. Its been pretty damn fun to mess around with and waste time during class. Playing earthbound, megaman, mario rpg on it is always fun. Unfortunately the GBA emulator doesn't work very well. But so far there isn't anything I've wanted this phone to do that it can't.

Has anyone here reflashed their radio? I'm trying out the Telus radio at the moment, but wondering if anyone in the area has experience with one of the different ones and has one to recommend.

^Where did you get the emulators? I'm getting bored of only playing Bubble Breaker

And, a more pertinent question: How do you get the phone to send emails through the NCSU email account on Alltel? I have the right server for downloading my emails, but for stmp.ncsu.edu I can't send emails.

Digging through this thread is where I got my emulators. I'm not 100% on which versions I used as there are several different ones in there. The main difference was that I've only found one version that ran Mario RPG, other then that every other one works about the same. I've only tried the PocketSNES ones, I still want to try Picodrive and Morphgear.

I believe the PocketSNES by Masterall is the one that lets use your keyboard instead of an on screen controller, but you will need kfortouchpro to be able to use any key on your keyboard.

Are you using a custom rom? If you aren't then I highly recommend it. I use the latest version of MightyMouse. Also at the moment I'm trying out PointUI, its currently a work in progress but I'm really liking it compared to TF3D, its fun to play around with.

Oh and I'm currently transferring over Android so I can play around with that. Its still in very early stages and is not really useful at all as it can't use your phones radio but I haven't yet seen a android phone so I want to mess around

I have Alltel already with my family so I might get the Touch Pro, but it depends on how much the data plan will cost. Are you guys still enjoying this phone or do you think its worth waiting for the next gen HTC (I'm not aware of any).

^According to a post a bit up this page by OmarBadu, the Touch Pro 2 is expected out in the third quarter of this year. Depends if you want to/can wait until sometime in the fall. Not sure what the upgrades are supposed to be--but I can't really think of anything I'd like them to add, other than more battery life.

^ In addition to the battery life I think that they could stand to trim down the size and use a better quality touch screen. I also wish they would integrate the headphone port directly into the phone. That single thing right there is what keeps me from using my phone over my iPod.

True, that would be nice, as would smaller size.

The touch screen I don't mind--it's one of, if not the, highest resolution screens out there on a phone right now. A tad more sensitivity might be nice, but that's about it.

With a custom rom or some tweaks the tps battery life is pretty good, i can go a full day with browsing, texting, push email and the occasional game. And as for the touch pro 2 it unfortunately is not a big hardware upgrade. I think it has a bigger keyboard, bigger screen but the main hardware is the same. And sensitivity wise i have no problems, i rarely use the stylus.

HTC Touch Pro2 For $880
http://www.uberphones.com/2009/04/htc_touch_pro2_for_880/

Quote :
"We’ve all been drooling over HTC’s Touch Pro2 for quite a while now, but the million dollar question is how much will the device cost? It looks like HTC has finally decided to shed some light on the subject, though it’s not exactly cheap. Folks in Singapore will be able to pick up the HTC Touch Pro2 for SGD1328 ($880), so you can expect to see the device retailing at a similar price point when it’s released in other markets. Folks over in Singapore should be able to purchase the Touch Pro2 from late June, which is about the time it should be made available elsewhere too. On a similar note, the Touch Diamond2 will also be going on sale in Singapore in mid-May for SGD1088 ($725)."

i love how the promo shots look so sexy with the gloss and candy effects

I am really wanting this thing. Do a new contract with Alltel in July so this should hit around that time. Hopefully I can get a good deal on it with a contract but seems like a hell of a lot of money for this thing.

Ah, they tilt-ified it. Nice. I was wondering why they didn't do that on the first version.

Looks cool, but I don't think it will be worth an upgrade from my current one. Maybe something will break and I'll get another free upgrade like I did from the Mogul to the Touch Pro.

^^ Amazon was doing a deal where you could get it for 250 before rebate or something with a new contract. I got best buy to price match it on an upgrade instead of new contract. Then I mailed in the rebate. Sprint refused to accept the rebate as Best Buy is apparently not one of the retailers eligible for the rebate. I had to go through like 10 customer service reps to get them to honor it. Nowhere did it say it could only be used at certain retailers.

Just started using WM6.5, its pretty neat. Only thing it is really lacking for me at the moment is a good music player, I enjoyed TF3D's music player.

Yeah I switched to a 6.5 rom. Swapping roms is an incredibly easy process, the only problem that comes with it is reinstalling all your stuff but I have it down to the point where it really doesn't take more then 10 minutes to swap. And each time I do it I find more and more crap I don't actually use that I don't reinstall.

6.5 is still a little bit rusty, its customizable but there aren't any super easy ways to do it, but all the same I've been able to do almost everything I want to do with it, and I love the look.

Again, my biggest gripe with it is its lack of a good music player, but I'm sure someone is hard at work on that. For now I just have a button set up to swap between WM6.5 and TF3D so I can use TF3D's music player if I need to.

Thanks for the heads up on the Mighty Mouse. I recently got Gmail and couldn't configure my phone to sync with it, so I got SEVEN from reading around on ppcgeeks. Trouble is, my phone WILL NOT last through the day. Its ridiculous. Couple days ago, the phone was locked up on some program (the on board Youtube app) and even though I had it plugged in overnight, it didn't charge at all.

Are you using a custom rom? The problem is when the phone overheats it will stop charging. Typically that happens with a lot of data connection. When using Mighty 4.13-4.15 I never had it happen to me. Using Mighty Rom 4.16 and Mighty Rom 5 I've started to have overheating problems. I also switched to a different radio around the time I went to Mighty Rom 4.16 so that might have affected it too. I've since switched back to the Telus radio as I don't recall having overheating with that one. Mostly you will overheat when using a lot of data stuff. When I'm streaming radio I tend to overheat after 20-30 minutes, or when I'm using Garmin for a really long time. Its not something that has become a problem though.

Wm 6.5 is pretty awesome though, I'm really liking it so far and I know the customization is only going to getting muchhh better. I really wish I had a better option for a music player then having to switch to TF3D then go to that music player. I suppose I could just use TF3D but I love the look of 6.5.

I have a stock ROM still. I haven't taken the time to go and research what would be best...maybe next week or two that I'm taking off until work starts.

Is Mighty Mouse the same program type as WM 6.5? Or could I get WM 6.5 and then put Might Mouse on there too
