NC Has Most Expensive Gas in Continental US

Quote :
"Raleigh, NC -- Some parts of North Carolina have the most expensive gasoline in the continental United States, but the prices already are dropping in some areas.

North Carolina motorists paid an average of $3.79 a gallon for regular gasoline Tuesday, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday. That's 31 cents above the national average and higher than any other state except for Alaska and Hawaii.

The statewide average dropped to $3.76 a gallon Wednesday, according to the AAA Carolinas auto club, compared to a national average of $3.44 a gallon. Average prices ranged from $3.52 a gallon in the Wilmington area to $3.85 in the Raleigh area, AAA said.

Prices even drew comment from Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, who told a crowd in Jacksonville that they were a problem.

"You feel it in your stomach when you fill up," she said during a campaign stop. "You're stuck with some of the highest gas prices in the country."

Industry and government officials say the hurricanes that disrupted production in the Gulf of Mexico are responsible for the higher prices.

Much of the gasoline brought into the state while the pipeline was being refilled came on tanker truck convoys, but kept the prices higher, said Carol Gifford, spokeswoman for Charlotte-based AAA Carolinas.

"We had to ship it from Jacksonville, Fla., to Charlotte, just to get some of those stations wet," said Pete Sodini, president of the Sanford-based Pantry chain that has 1,600 stores in 11 states. "It cost almost 30 cents a gallon to truck it from Jacksonville, but we had no choice."

Extra deliveries at the port of Wilmington improved supplies in the eastern part of the state and some stations had prices Monday below $3.40.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reported prices had dropped sharply -- between 20 and 30 cents a gallon -- in Onslow County within two hours Tuesday. One station was selling regular gasoline for $3.41 a gallon.

The CEO of GoGas, which operates several stations in eastern North Carolina, said in an e-mail to The Daily News that the last month had been challenging. Reggie Stanley said his company bought eight loads of gasoline in September for $5.25 a gallon but sold then for $3.79.

Mike Stater of Clayton wondered why prices were so high.

"At the $90 per barrel price for crude, shouldn't (gas) prices be back down in the ranges they were a year ago?" said Stater. "Sounds like some gouging going on to me."

The North Carolina attorney general's office has investigated reports of price gouging, but a spokeswoman would not say Tuesday whether there is any evidence of overcharging.

And here in the triangle we're seeing some of the highest prices in the state. I was in Greensboro over the weekend and saw regular for ~3.60 there, while around here we're still hovering at ~3.90, with up to 3.99 in places.

One of my friends from Richmond said it was $3.30 last weekend there. I paid $3.59 at Lake Gaston, but it was still $3.89 when I got back to Raleigh.

Just about every gas station in my area is still out of everything but 87 octane. A few are completely out.

I think about $3.70 is the average here in Huntsville. I know a secret gas station though that is always about 20 cents cheaper than the standard ones.

You can now get gas in Oklahoma City for $2.60 a gallon.

Sub $3 gas in NC is just around the corner.

I will not change my car driving habits (I have cut driving by about 40% with carpooling), but I do plan on enjoying a trip in the airplane when I no longer have to pay $7.50 a gallon for gas at RTP. Hoping 100LL prices will be back near the 3.50-4.50 mark.

My car runs on diesel, so it's hard enough to find here in the fucking burbs. Yesterday, I had to hunt for a station that carried diesel and wasn't completely out.

Right now, in Columbus County and Elizabethtown, prices for LL are around 4.70 a gallon. Prices for 100LL change at most places very slowly, but even if prices held for oil, we would see 100LL prices approaching 3.50-4 at the cheapest spots.

I would suspect the most expensive spots when all the dust settles would be in the mid $5 a gallon.

Suffolf Virginia is another great place to fill up cheaply.

Saw several stations that have dropped 25-30 cents in the Charlotte/Huntersville area lately. I was surprised to see so many Exxons for 3.49 around Charlotte tho. Everyone else was a good 20 higher. That Sheetz/Pilot/Flying J is a good gashole.

Usually around here in Burlington, just about every gas station (off 40 anyways) has the same price +/- 5 cents. Now you can hit one exit with stations at $3.2x and a mile later find $3.7x

yea same here around greenville. the other thing is that before this hurricane, for the last year that ive lived here, we are always significantly cheaper than NC (like 15-20 cents) and always well under the cheapest gas in the country (in fact often cited as the place with the cheapest gas in the country). right now we arent even close to that.

I suspect station owners know that the wholesale price of gasoline is going to fall sharply for this region very shortly and are therefore holding off restocking gasoline until it does. That it the only explanation I have for a gas station running out around about now.

I'm just glad that NC is one of the proud and the few states that's charging a $1 more than most other states. I guess gas can't drop below $3.00/g here, since the tax alone is what... $2.75/g?

My boyfriend in IL (also very high gas taxes) said it was $3.08 there last night. Probably cheaper than that today. Normally he pays about 10 cents a gallon more than it costs in Raleigh. Hopefully prices will correct themselves and we will see sub $3 gas soon.

I was just reporting what I read at this website:
http://www.raleighgasprices.com/

Regretfully, the station has changed to unreported. As such, the report may be too old to keep.

But here is where it was:
