i agree with the professor thing (to an extent). most of my fav. profs had awesome stories and experiences. i'd love to teach but i want to be able to share the same experiences and stories so i guess i have to do shit first.i did have a couple of strictly academic professors who were awesome, too though. they knew EVERYTHING (or so it seemed at the time)[Edited on October 29, 2008 at 9:42 PM. There are a lot of qualified applicants for positions. How many university posts do you see in philosophy and mathematics?Yeah.Shut the fuck up.

what? nothere are more than 350 people in the field can you not fucking readusually there are at least a couple of hundred applicants for a tenure track positionwhat is hard about that to understandthere are plenty of intelligent PhD's in physics who, for instance, work at places like the EPA doing computational toxicology -- not because they suck or are stupid, but because the field is saturated as shitnot everybody can get a tenure track in physics/math/philosophy/linguistics/etc. It means it's a very competitive field, which means it's far from "safe academia"do you have any fucking idea what you're arguing for anymore
10/29/2008 10:53:23 PM
: you talked about how exclusive and difficult your field is. it sounds like it's just saturated, not that it's particularly difficult.I'm WELL aware of the fact that academic PhD's can and do venture into industry being that my former roomate does something similar to your physics reference, and my uncle made the move in his career as well.yes I know what I'm arguing for. You're Ph.D quest is not any more difficult or unique than most of the rest of us on this site who have educations and happy carreers. Yet you seem to think that going for another degree somehow puts you on a higher playing field, or that YOUR particular area of interest is MORE important, difficult than anything the rest of us do.And it's not. You have it just as easy or hard as the rest of us. I can call out all kinds of terminology, research, history and fundamentals that you wouldn't have a clue about either. Does that make me better than you? No, we have different interests.

oh look. you guys are still arguing.

You know what I was typing up a reply, but I'm not going to argue with youpeople on this site are right, you're a glorified web designer with a chip on his shoulder who thinks he knows shiti could go point by point and talk about why you're incredibly wrong, but you'll try to shift the conversation because you're master internet debater or some retarded shit like thisthe only person you're fooling is yourself -- keep walking around talking about how PhD programs in computational fields are "not so hard" because your dinky piece of shit terminal master's degree wasn't that conceptually hardBACK TO PITTSBURGH CHATshit's cold today, fuck raleigh
