No joke."

I'm with QTPie on this. I'm looking forward to spending time with my parents and my fiancee.

Although I could use some new socks

Oh, I also kinda want a DS. But it would be sort of bad if I got it because that would end up making me spend money that I shouldn't spend to buy games for it.

"I hate people like this. Families that do this are retarded, why wouldn't you just spend time with each other and NOT spend your money when all your doing is trading items that you would have just bought yourself anyway? It's just an excuse to spend a ton of money so you can hope you get something you want in return.

I guess its just the way I was raised but how obnoxious that you would be so specific about what you want your gift to be"

1 - She spends plenty of time with her family already.
2 - She wouldn't buy that stuff for herself otherwise.
3 - They would spend a ton of money on gifts anyway. If she isn't specific then she'd only get shit she doesn't want.

And don't assume they're all selfish people with lots of money. They donate stuff too.

I grew up comparably with very little and I don't like it when people buy lots of gifts. But, I do understand her family and thats just how they like to do things. They enjoy it.

it goes both ways. you were rasied one way, i was raised another. i was asked for my list and given an amount i could work with. it's just how we do things and it's how we've always done things. we have big christmases. i live in the same town as my family, and i work for my dad. i see him everyday and i talk to mom almost everyday and see her a couple of times a week. i go to their house every weekend almost. and no, i couldn't afford to buy these things for myself. they want specific, they ask for the details, and i include links to everything that i can. mom does the same for me. it makes it a lot easier to distribute lists/gift ideas to other family members too. i'm not hoping i get something i want in return, i know pretty well what i'll get. as bad as that may sound to you, it's just how it is for us.

in addition to this, mom & dad donate a ton of stuff and money to charities. mom goes every christmas and picks up several of those card things off angel trees and buys little kids who aren't as fortunate a shit ton of stuff. they give a lot of cash to the salvation army as well as other organizations.

don't go assuming shit.

I'd rather get something I know my family wants instead of guessing and maybe only half satisfying them. Giving gifts is fun, giving a gift they don't really want is disappointing.

the simple fact is that you have to hang out with family a lot to know what it is they need/want. Often the small, simple gift that fills a niche is the perfect one.

For example. My dads favorite gift I've ever given him was a mortar brush. He uses it on his grill because it has funny plates that a regular grill brush can't get into and get clean. Best gift ever, $6 at Lowe's...

i got my brother two new wireless xbox 360 controllers so he has a total of four and he got me a cordless dremel

i need a new sirius receiver and my girlfriend is going to get me a digital weller soldering iron

it is just easier when we all tell each other what we want, then there are no returns (but no surprises either)

there really isnt anything else that i want or need
