The best thing that ever happened to me was my first real job i had after graduating ended. Now I am going on 4 years at the job after that and it looks like a lifer.[Edited on November 10, 2008 at 11:16 PM. Reason : w]

that's awesome. i feel fortunate to have worked with who i did, just as a contract employee it wasn't going anywhere really. i'm almost glad i got laid off in a way. i was underpaid and under-appreciated, but not motivated enough to do anything about it.(right after i just said i have all the motivation to get a new job )i just got complacent. You made the bulldozers go Last week, I got laid off on monday. Then re-hired on wednesday. Tuesday, however, I was kinda looking forward to a longer job search. I figured with savings plus unemployment, I had 7-10 months before I had to get something. Oh well. Good luck.
11/10/2008 11:30:07 PM
isnt unemployment up to a year now?
11/10/2008 11:31:07 PM
yeah but with a mortgage, etc, I figured it would account for maybe half of monthly bills. Also, I got a first time home buyers loan. If you lose your job and qualify for unemployment and have made a few payments already in the first two years, you get like 4 months of the mortgage payments delayed and added to the back end of the loan.
11/10/2008 11:32:37 PM
so did the company say "ooops, we didnt mean to let you go?"
11/10/2008 11:34:58 PM
no, they just have a ton of work to do, laid off a lot of people, and then another guy quit. I think mostly it was because I was almost as badass as that other guy.
11/10/2008 11:35:55 PM
11/10/2008 11:39:50 PM
yeah it was a weird week. at least I got a couple of days free "vacation" out of it.
11/10/2008 11:42:07 PM
yeah, if you call vacation worrying about how you're going to pay your mortgage!
11/10/2008 11:44:02 PM
I think he was saying he had enough money saved up, plus unemployment, to last awhile...that was the same case with me....and I just really went through the motions of applying (as required).[Edited on November 10, 2008 at 11:46 PM. Reason : m]
11/10/2008 11:45:41 PM
ahhh, yeah. i see that now.still, not having a job all of a sudden is pretty stressful.
11/10/2008 11:47:10 PM
definitely.
11/10/2008 11:48:16 PM
think positive.you got laid off because there is a better job just around the corner.dont worry Pipyopee, everything will be mo bettah
11/10/2008 11:48:33 PM
actually Ive been getting it so much I kinda dont want to get laid for a night.Ive got too much homework.
11/10/2008 11:49:16 PM
yeah, but sometimes it is a good thing....you said you wanted to get another job (not contracting) but were too lazy...now...you dont have much of a choice...I had a 4 month break between jobs... My parents were the ones that keep bothering me about it...lol[Edited on November 10, 2008 at 11:55 PM. Reason : w]

11/10/2008 11:52:51 PM
yeah, and you need to afford Joie and with Xmas and all coming around....she dont want no coal in her stockings.
11/10/2008 11:54:02 PM
11/10/2008 11:55:48 PM
so the company you worked for, they just laid off all the contractors? Those are the first to go.
11/10/2008 11:57:50 PM
yep. production line contractors were first to go.they cut all overtime for contracting office personnel.then a wave of layoffs.so i saw it coming.
11/10/2008 11:58:48 PM
contract employees get paid more than regular employees I have heard (at least the ones that I work with do). However, the bad thing is that they are, of course, contract employees.[Edited on November 11, 2008 at 12:02 AM. Reason : w]

it usually pays for their benefits and etc, though, doesn't it?
11/11/2008 12:02:34 AM
not if you're an "adjunct professor"
11/11/2008 12:03:07 AM
^^,^^^ yeah, i didn't have any benefits. no vacation (all no-pay, no-penalty) and no sick days. so it was supposed to pay for that.unfortunately i got shafted coming out of school since i didn't really know what i was doing. you live, you learn.contracting can be great as long as you know what you're getting into as far as length of employment and risk are concerned.[Edited on November 11, 2008 at 12:04 AM.
