Where he hell did I call NCSU an inferior academic school? They are completely different. And if I recall correctly I defended State in that regard in another thread in a quite reasonable discussion. And just FYI, this is why the typical UNC person usually ignores the typical NCSU person. It may come off as snobbish but its mentalities like yours where you are obviously defensive, and insinuate insecurity in the process (whether or not its true) that earn you disregard. Yes, you have a degree from NCSU, congrats. But the way you respond to others makes it seem like you are trying to prove something when in reality, no one really cares that much. ^ DING DING DINGThats one of the things I was referring to. Not that Im advotacting that, but the whole painting the Well and Bell Tower is really played out by now. There are so many things that can be done to both campuses...^^^ To the big bad tough talking guy, saying a school isnt an academic rival doesnt mean one school is superior than the other. Neither school is within the same academic profile. Thats why they are not rivals. They dont have much of anything in common for a direct comparison. Instead of coming at a discussion with GRRRRR IM A BAAAAAAD BAAAAAAD MAN, perhaps you should let your mind talk instead of your ego.[Edited on November 18, 2008 at 11:23 AM. Reason : .]

^ read my edit.Yes NCSU and Clemson would be perfect rivals, perhaps even ECU is more alike to NCSU for an in state rivalry. But then again if Clemson and NCSU are designing buildings for each other... a rivalry would seem kind of scary (or the buildings rather).^ That would be part of the reason for justification to the athletics statement. The majority part of it is simply that our whole "theme" so to speak, is aimed at Duke. Its wierd in that Duke and UNC collaborate a LOT research wise, but they are bitter rivals athletically. Perhaps that Clemson/NCSU rivalry could work out after all.[Edited on November 18, 2008 at 11:26 AM. Reason : .]

UNC is not a rival with Duke then either because they are not the same ( applying your logic)
11/18/2008 11:26:17 AM
UNC/Duke are more alike than UNC/NCSU. If you are going to go down that road I would seriously recommend you to look in to Dukes profile.
11/18/2008 11:27:41 AM
Lets be honest...Duke is to UNC as UNC is to State. And Duke and UNC ARE NOT more alike than UNC and State. Sorry buddy.

what you are saying is so fucking stupid that I do not need to provide an argument,Lets see um private school vs public for startersRich white males vs mostly homo malesmedical school ( technical) vs business ( liberal arts)In fact the only thing they do have in common is a good basketball team(sports), but you do not apply that in your rival equation so it doesn't count
11/18/2008 11:51:42 AM
So UNC and Duke dont both have medical schools or business schools?Whats the Roberson Scholarship Program? Before you post again, seriously, review the 2 schools academic profiles. [Edited on November 18, 2008 at 11:53 AM. Reason : .]

Oh now youre making inferences about what a person thinks after calling a medical school technical, and a business school liberal arts.Duke and UNC's Business schools are also both in the top 25 for MBA, and EMBA programs. I dont know about the undergrad programs but I would assume they are similarly ranked as well.Do you even know what makes a University an Engineering school or a Liberal Arts School? Do you know how they earn that designation?Good job.Note: Im trying to get you to think outside the small world youre currently in.[Edited on November 18, 2008 at 11:57 AM. so you are telling me that duke med = unc med ?
11/18/2008 11:57:25 AM
^^ Can you make a facebook event and send an invite pls?thx.^ Exactly equal, no. Dukes Med School is 3 years long, UNC is 4. Duke also has a completely different style for med school students. Its not the traditional academic set up you find at most others. They are competitive academically, research wise, and for rankings, yes.[Edited on November 18, 2008 at 12:00 PM. Reason : .]

UNC and Duke both have medical and law schools...other than that...I don't see the similarities. And I'm basing my comparison on mostly undergrads.UNC and State both state schools. Their students bodies are very similar. Most are filled with kids from North Carolina with similar academic profiles (with UNCs profiles being a bit higher). Duke is a private institution with students mostly from out of state with academic profiles much higher than State and UNC.There's my BASIC evidence as to why UNC and State are a lot more similar than UNC and Duke.
11/18/2008 12:00:35 PM
i dont know a single person that goes to dukeon the other hand about 80 ppl from my hometown in my year go to state and about 90 go to uncthat alone makes this more of a rivalry than unc-duke[Edited on November 18, 2008 at 12:04 PM. Reason : .]

Who cares which school is closer to Duke?Get back on topic. This thread is about wut being hit with the cold hard reality that he couldn't cut it at State as an engineer so he had to go to UNC to be a librarian. But he still thinks UNC is a better school academically. Now, continue...
11/18/2008 12:09:53 PM
Ok fair enough. You present basic evidence so lets discuss that. UNC (and NCSU) both have limitations on what percentage of out of state students can comprise the total student body. At the moment I think its set at 20%. The composition of their student body doesnt really represent their academic profiles. It has nothing to do with how curriculum are established nor the quality thereof.Duke and UNC both have Medical, Business, Law Schools, Duke School of the Environment and UNCs school of public health, Both have a School of Nursing, etc. Most of these schools are ranked in relative close proximity to each other and academically competitive. You are right about the public/private issue. However Duke and UNC are ranked toward, if not at the top of their respective status. Duke is #8 for all National Universities (which the top 25 are mostly Ivy and high priced private schools), UNC is #5 for Public National Schools. They are not too dissimilar.
11/18/2008 12:13:46 PM
lol, he had to leave NCSU engineering to do something a bit easier, such as Library Science at that super superior UNC school. LOL what a fucking joke![Edited on November 18, 2008 at 12:15 PM. Reason : .]
11/18/2008 12:15:21 PM
lol. You are delusional. You are one of those UNC students that think that going to UNC is like going to Duke. It is not.You know the difference of how hard it is to get into one vs the other. What type of students generally go to Duke? Are they from Jersey?More people attend UNC as a common standard local person ( just as they attend State) than Duke. You tarheels lack reality, you are not better than Duke, you are not equal to them academically. Go look it up at this website http://www.google.comA rivalry is not based on what type of school you are, the fact that State, UNC, and Duke are 20 mins from each other and have had sports success at some point against each other created the rivalry.Last week an Alabama fan killed two LSU fans over a football game. When was the last time this happened over an argument on who has the better basket weaving degree?
11/18/2008 12:15:43 PM
to get this thread back on topic...someone needs to go to chapel hill and measure the spotlights they use on their belltower. soon after, someone can take those measurements to a glass place and have red glass panels cut to fit on top. upon victory this person/persons can place these panels on the spotlights making UNC's belltower red. this is a good idea because 1. it would anger a lot of unc fans at the same time2. it is completely harmless and would cause zero damage3. it woudlnt take much effort4. the pictures would be pricelessi win.

vonjordan3, your post is laden with so many holes its not even funny.UNC by mandate, and by purpose of whats written in its constitution is INTENDED to educate the people of the state. Thats why there are restrictions on out of state students. Trying to justify rivalry based on location doesnt help your argument. UNC and Duke are 8 miles from each other, much closer than NCSU is to either. No one is saying UNC is better than Duke. They are saying that the two schools are academically competitive.I think you, personally, have so many insecurities about wanting to be recognized that you turn every statement in to an insinuation about superiority/inferiority. dubcaps has a much more tasteful suggestion for a prank

What exactly do you expect when you post inflammatory comments and general attacks towards a school on a messageboard for students of that school? The "insecurity" argument is rather convenient, not to mention hypocritical. If you're so "above us," you probably wouldn't feel the need to arbitrarily flex e-nuts.It takes a lot of hard work and intestinal fortitude to be a state fan. It sounds like the 'inferior' NCSU academics were too tough for you, not to mention sticking with the team that you were raised following. I'm glad you're one of them now, I wouldn't want you as a fellow state alum or fan.]]

The USN&WR rankings are bogus. Here is how they calculate their rankings: (remember, this is undergrad only)http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/best-colleges/2008/08/21/how-we-calculate-the-rankings.html?PageNr=1Peer assessment ( 25 percent) Basically means how others in academia feel about a school. Not a quantitative assessment and is likely biased. Interesting that such a qualitative measurement is so highly weighted. Also wonder how many schools with journalism programs are at the top?Retention (20 percent) % of freshmen that end up graduating. State's scores are obviously hurt by morons like wut that couldn't graduate. UNC is bolstered by the fact that they are a liberal arts school and their courses are much easier.Faculty resources (20 percent) UNC and State are probably similar.Student selectivity (15 percent) UNC is high on the rankings so everyone from out of state wants to go there. They have to turn a lot away which keeps them high in the rankings.Financial resources (10 percent) UNC and State are probably similar.Graduation rate performance (5 percent) don't know.Alumni giving rate (5 percent) don't know. What is missing and what I think is most important is how well that degree prepared you for life after college. If you get a 4 year degree in engineering from State (ranked 37th nationally) but make more coming out than any 4 year degree you can get from UNC (ranked 5th) what does that tell you? UNC might be able to do the best job in the nation at putting out English, history, and library science majors but can they find a job in those majors? What is their salary?I know so many people that went to UNC, graduated with a puff degree, and then waited tables or did some other hourly waged job until they could find a real job or went back to get another degree.UNC can have their ranking. I'll take my engineering degree and higher salary any day.
11/18/2008 12:53:53 PM
^ UNC has a higher endowment and thusly, probably a higher alumni giving rate. I don't know what "Graduation rate performance" measures. Is it salary? Is it ability to find a job? It's 5%, so it doesn't mean much.
