I was baptized Lutheran, but over the past several years I have been questioning a lot about religion. So I guess I would label myself as non-religious at this point. Not atheist, just non-religious.

when I was younger I was a devout atheist, of late I've been leaning towards agnosticism

I enjoy attending different churches from time to time, in the spirit of observing religion as a social phenomena rather than practicing

My aunt is a pastor and has her own church in Lenoir. It's really nice, and I enjoy being there, I just have issues with organized religion. I am not a fan of people passing judgment on me, or telling me the "right way" to worship god.

Raised Methodist, go to a little Baptist church now, but ain't getting rebaptized or whatever. I consider myself fairly religious, but I try not to throw it in everybody elses face so I keep it to myself.

I gotta comment on this from page 1:

Quote :
"i get up and leave a church service if they read out of anything other than the King James Version of the Bible"

I just don't get this. Its one translation that doesn't take into account the Dead Sea Scrolls and other documents that have been found since KJV was written 400 years ago. I get that KJV is "prettier", but I'm sorry its not the only word in Biblical text. NIV and NASB are more accurate translations of the Greek Bible, and honestly, they are easier to read and understand. My church uses KJV and NIV, and I think both are just fine. I can't believe some people are so judgemental that they would leave a church for reading from the NIV vs the KJV. They are both just as fallible.

^I agree with you. I think it's pretty silly when people say they only read the KJV because it's the original version of the Bible. They use the argument that the bible says not to translate...so when they say that I come back with "yeah, that's why I am fluent in Greek"

i think some of you are confusing the term 'non-denominational' with the unity church or unitarian universalism .... non-denominational churches are protestant and as such, most affirm the nicene creed and apostles creed. in my experience, most non-denominational churches are more statements against the division of the church through denominations and tend to focus more on Jesus rather than nits like which method (sprinkling, immersion, etc) of baptism is "proper".

^that's not true...I had a teacher that was a preacher at a non-denominational church and he said that they are closer to baptists than lutherans, and that they don't do infant baptism.

^^^ baptists are typically considered protestant. and again, just because a church is labeled as non-denominational doesn't mean they won't have a stance on things (baptism, for example).

I'd agree with both...

I look at a lot of contemporary music and it really amounts to little more than generic songs with formulaic lyrics that are practically ripped from actual love songs but saying "Jesus" instead of [baby/girl/darling/ect]. There are exceptions, but they aren't common and many are too musically technical to be performed by the no-talent fucksticks that stand up in front of most churches.

But then you look at traditional music, and try to think of why it's better... and then you notice that a ton of the songs have musical lines ripped from older classical pieces with newer jesus-based lyrics chopped in... Read the footnotes on a hymnal sometime, and then laugh at how most of them involve a melody written some time between 1500 and 1700, with lyrics written by some totally unrelated person in the 1800s or early 1900s...

Short version: Most christian songwriters are talentless hacks with little respect for artistic integrity or the intellectual property of others.

Being a christian who does not identify with any denomination... this whole "non-denominational church" thing seems like an idiotic oxymoron. Making a non-denominational church would be like someone deciding to start an "Unaffiliated Party" in politics... or a bunch of social non-conformists getting together at a starbucks to celebrate how different they all are(n't).

it's nonsense and more importantly it defeats the very purpose and idea of not having a denomination.

An athiest has to have a pretty good idea of the God / gods / goddesses / goddi / Jedi that he does not believe in.

I highly doubt the existence of a higher being, I do not fear said beings wrath nor desire its love, but I do not eliminate the slight possibility that it may exist.

You sound like an atheist then. This is why I asked the question

Atheists don't believe in any god yes. We don't all say there isn't a possibility that we're wrong. In fact you'll be hard pressed to find a hardcore atheist that will argue that there absolutely isn't a god.

In The God Delusion, Dawkins places his brand of de facto atheism at number 6 along a scale of 1 to 7, where 1 is “strong theist” and 7 is “strong atheist.”

“I am an agnostic,” Dawkins says, “only to the extent that I am agnostic about fairies at the bottom of the garden.”

Dawkins asserts that strong atheism (of the magnitude of 7 on his belief scale) is not possible because:
Quote :
"reason alone could not propel one to the conviction that anything definitely does not exist. I count myself in category 6, where 6 represents very low probability [of God existing], but short of zero. De facto atheist. I cannot know for certain but I think God is very improbable, and I live my life on the assumption that he is not there."

I agree with him 100%.

True agnostics tend to say "don't know, don't care", say both sides are equally likely, and don't pick a side.

I suppose part of my reluctance to affiliate myself as an "atheist" is the ignorant assertion of some militant atheists that the world will magically right itself and become a post-theistic utopia.

God(s) and religion are an outgrowth of human nature. Eliminating them will not change our nature, merely redirect both its positive and negative impulses. Generally good people who suddenly find themselves without a God will continue to do good things. Generally bad people will continue to do bad things.

actually the bible itself says that (well in its essence) but at he same time it is more fulfilling to the christian to fellowship with others

you dont have to, all you have to do to get to heaven is ask the Lord Jesus for forgiveness and you can sit on your ass for the rest of your life

fellowship helps you to improve and grown in Christ

its not the entertainment industry dude

they write these songs, and we sing these songs to praise the name of God (or whomever) it doesnt matter how talented you are or are not

not to go platinum and wear iced grills, if it were a matter of IP im sure more people would come forward and sue. Most of the remakes are done with permission

Born and raised a Salvationist (a branch of Christianity). Yes, I went to church at the Salvation Army (yes, it was a church before a non-profit organization). My dad has been my pastor my whole life.

Since I moved away from home, I haven't stepped foot back into the church.

Vodoo bitches

Actually i'm agnostic, but not the "I dont care" version. More of the "I can confidently say I dont fucking know" version. What people dont realize is that a lot of aggy's have thought long and hard their whole life about it and the stance of agnosticism comes as a solid assertion and nothing more.

it also doesn't necessarilly have to correlate or interfere with one's own spiritual inclinations either
