wtf..where do you people get mcmillionare from? These houses are average at best. The first house pictures is slightly above average. These are by no means million dollar homes or even rich people homes. Middle class.

if we proceed this along you will switch to "upper middle class"

which is not what people think of when you say "middle class"

they think of "lower middle class"

the lower middle class can NOT afford the first house and probably can not afford the other three either

no. especially not in places like cary. just because the houses may not look HUGE doesn't mean that they aren't valued high because of location (that is if they are in cary area).

and while the houses *probably* aren't million dollar houses, they are not 200,000 houses, either.

^ yes
The use of facebook profiles and especially myspace pages in journalism is a fucking joke. I'm embarrassed for them. It's like they don't realize they sound like a fucking high school paper when they do that. Remember when journalists actually had to do real research and call around to get more information on a story?

I love it when journalists find a pattern when they are looking for a pattern, but there really is no pattern.

You just made the switch. This is still middle class. Perhaps you should look up the scale of middle class then get back to me.

without looking up property values in the wake country tax records...I'd say the first house is 380-450. The other 3 are upper 200's low 300's IF they're in Cary. Again...this is not upper class OR million dollar homes. The first house is a typical house you'd see in the newer developed areas of cary. the other 3 is a typical house you'd see in either Apex or the older parts (~15 years old) of Cary.

all i'm sayin is i live in an older part of n. raleigh and our house looks like those houses (not the first one) maybe even smaller and i know what the property value on it is and it is WAY higher than you'd think for an old ass house.

i just don't think they are in the 200,000s. maybe low 3. but we can agree to disagree. and yea IF cary. i dont' know anything about apex.

not to be a dick and take sides but

House 1: 450k
Houses 2 - 4 <=250K.

these are also real numbers, not me making assumptions.

Either way, these kids are not poor and came from decent middle class backgrounds. Depending on the area- even between different ones of cary/apex- some of those homes would have been far more expensive

yes IF they are anywhere BUT cary. But if they're located in Cary you have to factor in that factor in the property value.

of course taking it for the absolute is silly, but it can give you a glimpse in to the character of a person. we check to see if defendants in our cases have facebook and myspaces all the time.

i think it works both ways...journalists just report in a more public forum. if someone's giving you easy access to their life, why not jump on the opportunity to get the news out faster before sitting down and doing more thorough investigation?

but those forums allow the public to gain a peak in to the character and lives of those involved; which is what the public wants when it comes to a murder case--what were these people like? people wnat to make a connection. it may sound dumb on paper, but it is what it is...it's part of that person. and if a prosecutor or investigator would use what these kids put on the internet as some shred of evidence to the mind of the individual behind it (not saying that writing, listening or doing certain things makes a person a killer either), then a journalist should be able to use it too even if it sounds stupid. they could've found out the same "stupid" information if they didn't have myspace or facebook by asking their friends and family...it just would've taken longer to get the information.

but it's easy access to the person...they'll go out and do more interviews (if people will answer...and they always do more) about these kids' and their lives and report that. it's a start though, so you go with what you got...and you gotta start somewhere. might as well be something they put online.

i guess i'm seeing it from a paralegal perspective...which with what i do, i always kind of feel like i'm doing investigative journalism. i start searching the basics: criminal record, driving record, and any myspace/facebook pages. then i go from there. it's the easy route, as dumb or helpful as it may be, but it gets you started...
