art speaks to people in different ways, no one can tell anyone what to like, i like cutesy paintings and messy paintings, as long as i can feel the emotion in them, or the colors are purdy and mix together well.

but anyways...

But is it deserved? My toddler can stand over any surface and drip paint (or food) all over it. "Action painting" my ass.

Compare Pollock's big, famous One: Number 31:

to some of Johns's work (I took these at MoMA a while ago - apologies if the quality isn't so hot):

Which one is more likely to evoke a reaction in someone who hasn't smoked weed?

It seems pretty straightforward to me. I don't think there's anything to "get" here.

I actually like those tire swing pictures. They would make good blank greeting cards

"art" without the conveyance of some emotion or feeling (be it an actual emotion or simply abstracts like emptiness or ambiguity) can't really be considered "art" at all... just "drawings", or "paintings" (or in the case of musical arts, "sounds")... but not "art".

I want to make it clear that I've never been a huge Pollack fan.

I like to think that with the proper level of inner turmoil, anyone could produce similar expression, because much of what seems to be conveyed in his work is unending series of tangles, explosions, and specks. It reflects a lot of emotion, ESPECIALLY if you've ever seen him in the act.

That said, I don't GET his individual works, but I think I get where it came from, and definitely understand his acclaim, and conversely, his criticism. He's quite polarizing.

So you can tell people about the latest difficult, pretentious piece of shit that some artsy, neo-bohemian fraud told you was important?

Abstract and somewhat difficult is okay - I like the poetry of Wallace Stevens... his sole goal in writing was to create resonance; to make his readers stop and actually see that which habit rendered invisible by using a disquieting description, one that is true but as with culture and religion, not really seen by individuals embedded in the day to day.

But... incomprehensible rubbish sucks - I loathe Gertrude Stein.

Something doesn't have to be swirling blotches of shit-color to be considered emotional...

The point here is that making a pretty picture simply for the sake of making a pretty picture or for the $texas (or in this case, $hawaii) is not "art" nor should it be called such. You can call it a pretty picture, you can call it a painting, you can call it a drawing, you can call it fucking pigment on a canvas, but you can't call something created in that context "art" and be correct.

you probably ought to opt for PM if you're just going to blatantly, baselessly call me out on something on which I haven't even commented. I said I enjoyed not understanding art. I haven't and don't go around touting obtuse artists, nor do I seek them out. Never have. Never will. Hell, 80% of the shit considered "abstract" I find to be absolutely tedious and forced, and can do away with. If you had read the thread, and, particularly, my posts (since you've taken interest enough to attempt to be a complete condescending pedant towards me with no reason), you can clearly see my thoughts on Pollack as a whole. Because, let's face it, this thread turned in a Pollack thread--not a thread about "neo-Bohemian frauds," about which, I know nothing. I know nothing of this, because none of the aforementioned frauds have spoken to me about said "important" pieces of shit.

and, for reasons like your own, I loathe Thomas Pynchon.
