Im really glad your ok and sense you are ok it is funny that the spider room was untouched. I mean, their faces must have been like But really, thats a good point about what you said about not having a gun. My aunt used to sleep with a knife under her pillow because she was scared someone would break in, and was stabbed to death with it. The risk and the benefits to me almost seem equal. Anyway... I hope the catch the guy, glad your unharmed, and your pets are all accounted for

I would have come unglued with ADT. Did you?

and as for having dogs its a headache. I have a big ass dog and i wouldn't expect him to save my life but Im certain that people take a look at two 100+ dogs in the house and think twice.

That reminds me of another friend of mine who had door trouble late one night, although she only with a cat. Someone started fumbling with and turning her door knob, and she went to the kitchen and got a knife. Fortunately the person eventually left, but damn if its not freaky.

Dad always said that you have to be careful of losing control of your weapon in a fight and having it turned against you.

people really are out of touch with reality, dogs are not humans yet we dress em up and ascribe them personalities and try to determine their temperments as if they are human

they arent, theyre animals and they have no business being assigned the duty of protecting the home. especially if its some god damn pooch you got off craigslist or from the SPCA that isnt trained worth a shit in home defense or anything of an aggressive nature

its really fuckin stupid"

interesting perspective

stupid perspective.

dogs are great at preventing burglaries because black people are afraid of dogs.

North Roxboro and East Club? Fair skinned white folk living there with swords, spiders, 5 cats, multiple game consoles? Are you the least bit surprised? Thats crack town. AKA Nigger town. Walking distance from AIDS. I like Durham, grew up there, but where you are at has not been a nice neighborhood since the 1970s. Get out while you can, head north or to the Bethesda/Brier Creek area.

that is so scary! i'd be the most freaked out that you were actually possibly in the house at the same time as them mentally i dont think i could handle that kind of drama

the spider room thing is hilarious, you know they were prob like "omg wtf is this shit?"

the glass break is a good thing to have! i have glass break alarms in my house and it definitely makes me feel a little more safe because i have a huge window in the living room! also if you dont already have it, you may consider having your alarm system connected cellularly (sp?) instead of through landlines which can be cut

glad all the animals are ok!

"I think the most any reasonable person would expect of their dog is to bark if someone is entering their house. That might not do a whole lot if nobody is home, but I'm sure there are plenty of instances where a barking dog alerted the homeowner of an intruder. I mean, if a dog barks at someone coming through the front door why wouldn't they bark and someone coming through the window?"

that can easily become the "burglary gone wrong" scenario

i would prefer not to do anything to "spook" a burglar id rather them take some shit than take a life

Haha...my parents rarely lock their doors, and especially not when anyone's up and awake.

My mom was up making soup at like 2am, and hears some noise from the wrong end of the house (ranch; bedrooms all at one end). She was dicing potatoes.

She figured maybe it was me coming home for the night, and stepped into the living room to greet me.

Some strange dude looked at the chef's knife in her hand, was like 'uh, wrong house. sorry!' and hightailed it out. (My mom wasn't expecting me, so she wouldn't have yelled out 'Chrissy?', and she's 5'10, and built like a brick outhouse)

our system is upgraded, and it was already on a battery backup and connected to our router, which is on a UPS. so even if the power is cut, we're good for at least a couple hours.

they caught the main kid on friday afternoon, after he robbed the house on the other side of the circle that morning. the little bastard lives across the street in the house he and his mother and sister were evicted from months ago. our neighbor 2 houses down saw him that afternoon walking by our house and picking up a stash of items near the woods. among the items recovered at his house were our digital camera and xbox 360. the 360 is broken (probably dropped it out the window when i came home), the camera was erased. and his buddy got busted that morning for trying to sell stolen goods at the local pawn shop. we hope some of our other items were among that bust, but we haven't heard yet. this id has been doing B&E since he was 14 (he's 16 now), he's in a gang, sells drugs, doesn't go to school and has even held up someone at a bus stop. the cops also found a gun among the items at the house.

bad news is that we still have to worry about his accomplices. at least one of them lives very close (one over from the house behind us), and the others appear to be other teenagers from the area. they were actually watching MJ and his dad replace our back window on wednesday, though we don't know if it was out of amusement or to figure out how to get back in. so despite the security improvements, i still worry about our home. we went out last night for a few hours, but that's about as long as we're comfortable with. monday will be tough when we both go back to work because all day we'll be wondering if our house is ok. i absolutely hate that every little noise we hear outside makes us think they're back.

our neighbors and some friends are pushing us to get a gun. i've never really considered it and i'd definitely want to take some training before i even considered having one around. i worry the most about it being used against us, and i've never been comfortable with the idea of guns in a house with young children.

all that being said, our neighborhood isn't bad. most people seem to be looking out for their neighbors or just keeping to themselves. there are just a couple assholes that are making it difficult for everyone. hopefully between the multiple robberies being pinned on him (with at least one case of grand theft) and the fact that he had our sword in the bathroom while the sheath was still on the stand in the bedroom (suggesting intent to use), he's going to stay behind bars for a while. apparently the neighborhood has been trying to get rid of this family for years. we're tempted to call the police and let them know that they mother and daughter are still trespassing by staying in the foreclosed house, but we worry about retaliation from the few (not-so-law-abiding) friends they have around here.
