http://blog.wired.com/underwire/2009/03/stone-unveils-s.html
Quote : | "If you corner South Park co-creator Matt Stone at some Los Angeles intersection, don't bother asking him what he and comedic partner Trey Parker have in store for the rest of the show's new season.
With South Park, Matt Stone, left, and Trey Parker have created a show that can turn out timely episodes on a dime. Photo courtesy South Park Studios They don't have a clue, and they like it that way.
So far in Season 13, South Park has taken on The Dark Knight, the Jonas Brothers, Disney and the current financial crisis.
But none of those timely, topical show concepts existed even a week prior to their airing, Stone says, and nobody associated with the animated sitcom knows for sure what politically incorrect terrain South Park's band of foul-mouthed fourth-graders will tread as the season unfolds.
"When we deliver an episode to Comedy Central," Stone told Wired.com, "we don't know what we want to do next. But Trey and I will hang out and talk about ideas. It comes down to what's on our mind and what makes us laugh.... Fortunately, we have a great set of artists and animators here that we can trust to put an episode together in that time. It lets us do anything we want to do from week to week."
Still, Stone said the ability to turn any story around in less than a week is something they try to use sparingly.
"We want the show to be funny and don't want it to be an issue show every week," said Stone. "Most of our shows don't (deal with current events) because we try to make sure that we're working with something people will remember."
There's no risk of anyone forgetting South Park's place in television and pop culture now. The award-winning show's success has given Parker and Stone the freedom to embrace their chaotic creativity and write about whatever they choose, no matter how sensitive the subject. Basing their wildly popular show around crudely animated characters gives them extra wiggle room to tackle taboo topics.
"We have very few problems with Comedy Central," Stone said. "They love us because we're making them a lot of money. And we're rich enough now that we have no one to be afraid of out there."
South Park has also embraced web distribution, offering all its episodes for free online. The preview clip for this week's April Fools' Day episode, "Eat, Pray, Queef," has been viewed more than 50,000 times.
While pundits found political movements on the show and Time magazine wonders aloud if South Park is "the most moral show on television," its creators want to make sure they don't disappear up their own backsides.
"We don't want to become the kind of Hollywood guys who take themselves seriously because we're rich and drive nice cars — even though we like being rich and driving nice cars," Stone said.
If Stone and Parker can keep their heads and maintain the well-oiled machine they set up, how long can South Park go on?
"Trey and I used to say we'd stop doing the show by the time we were 40 because we wouldn't be cool anymore, but Trey's almost 40 now — so maybe we'll change that to 50."
Season 13 of South Park continues at 10 p.m. Wednesdays on Comedy Central. " |

So they can throw together a show in a week. Big deal. I'd be impressed if they could throw it together in a week and still have it be funny. 4/1/2009 11:41:07 PM |

Am I the only one that made a connection to gay marriage at the end? Perhaps I just might be searching for a cultural reference in every little thing, but to me: women = gay people, queefs = gay marriage, men = straight people, farts = straight marriage. Am I crazy to think this?

An episode about how women should be treated as equals to men. ..on april fool's day. So should the general message be, "Hurray for women's efforts, they ARE equal! ...sike"?
(I didn't laugh until the Road Warrior.. then I lost it)

if you look at every episode since the beginning, I'd definitely agree that most their shows don't deal with current events. They may go after celebrities quite often, but I wouldn't go so far as to classify those episodes as current events.. 4/3/2009 9:57:24 AM |

yes, you are crazy.
the show was about shattering double-standards, but there are more double-standards in the world than just straight vs. gay marriage.....4/3/2009 11:35:24 AM |

^ I actually don't think that idea is too far fetched...I mean, I certainly didn't think about that while I was watching, and South Park usually does the best job they can to make sure their point is obvious but...
The idea does "work", is right in line with Trey and Matt's general views, and considering everything it could have been about, none of that necessitated the marriage at the end. The plot of the show did not call for a marriage of T&P and K&K to be married for a tie out, so I would believe an argument saying that the fact that they got married was a stronger symbol than you might think. 4/3/2009 12:18:03 PM |
