but they're 1. more likely to be able to do their job while they're here and 2. more likely to be good at their job while they're here. while it would be ideal to have someone that would be able to stick at your job for 10-20 years, that doesn't happen much no matter how much you can afford to pay someone. you won't be denied the job if you have more qualifications than someone else, you might not get the kind of money you want from it for whatever reason, but you don't have the resume experience wise to warrant that kind of money yet or you're looking at the wrong place to ask for that kind of money.

i'm not job hunting at higher than the part-time job market but it's common sense that no one is ever too good to be offered a job unless you're trying to fail.

^^^^ Not really true man. I know that certain managers and companies hire to spec. As in, they might want one Ph.D, and 3 M.S., 3 ex pros, and 3 whatever else in their department.
Certain budgets may not allow for people to hire certain degrees. Plain and simple, companies have to stay competitive with salary, or else employees will jump ship.

you're missing the point entirely. it's not as simple as hiring the most qualified person. companies hire people to fit roles and positions within a firm.

1) Applicants aren't stupid. It's not hard to figure out how much your worth. Given that, why would a Ph.D. be asking for the same salary as someone with a B.A.?

2) If for some odd reason, a Ph.D. did get hired, and was underpaid, what would they do? They would jump ship to another company. Businesses understand this. That's why they have minimum pay bands that you fall into based on experience and qualification.
