The energy issues are not just about global warming. It really doesn't matter what anyone's opinion on global warming is, because you can't deny that renewable resources and cleaner emissions will improve the air quality (therefor preventing health issues in future city dwellers) and will innovate CHEAPER energy sources (lower emissions = lower energy used = more money in your wallet).
Quote : | "Running a cartoon character with no ideas worked wonders for the Dems this past election" |
Just because you are too dumb to understand his ideas doesn't mean he doesn't have them.
BTW, a lot of people around campus (especially southern white christian sorority girls) looked at Sarah Palin as a golden goddess. How can people take that woman seriously?
Quote : | "It's better than the one-party alternative, anyway." |
Actually, arguably the most productive period of United States history was the Era of Good Feelings during the first quarter of the 1800's. Jefferson, Madison, Monroe (unopposed for re-election), Adams Jr, and Jackson were all elected as DR's with very little competition from the Federalists. It was practically a one-party country.

As usual with any politician's speech, Obama's was full of errors and misleadings...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090225/ap_on_go_pr_wh/fact_check_obama
OBAMA: "We have launched a housing plan.... It's a plan that won't help speculators or that neighbor down the street who bought a house he could never hope to afford,
THE FACTS: If the administration has come up with a way to ensure money only goes to those who got in honest trouble, it hasn't said so. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said it's important to save those who made bad calls, for the greater good.
OBAMA: "We have known for decades that our survival depends on finding new sources of energy. Yet we import more oil today than ever before."
THE FACTS: Oil imports peaked in 2005 at just over 5 billion barrels, and have been declining slightly since.
OBAMA: "We have already identified $2 trillion in savings over the next decade."
THE FACTS: Although 10-year projections are common in government, they don't mean much. And at times, they are a way for a president to pass on the most painful steps to his successor, by putting off big tax increases or spending cuts until someone else is in the White House.
Obama only has a real say on spending during the four years of his term. He may not be president after that and he certainly won't be 10 years from now.
OBAMA: "Regulations were gutted for the sake of a quick profit at the expense of a healthy market. People bought homes they knew they couldn't afford from banks and lenders who pushed those bad loans anyway. And all the while, critical debates and difficult decisions were put off for some other time on some other day."
THE FACTS: This may be so, but it isn't only Republicans who pushed for deregulation of the financial industries. The Clinton administration championed an easing of banking regulations, including legislation that ended the barrier between regular banks and Wall Street banks. That led to a deregulation that kept regular banks under tight federal regulation but extended lax regulation of Wall Street banks.
OBAMA: "In this budget, we will end education programs that don't work and end direct payments to large agribusinesses that don't need them....
THE FACTS: First, his budget does not accomplish any of that. It only proposes those steps. That's all a president can do, because control over spending rests with Congress. Obama's proposals here are a wish list 2/25/2009 10:57:21 AM |

Eh, semantics
Oil imports decreased by a whopping 1% from 2005 to 2007

I am sure Obama meant this as a broad time frame not as an absolute we imported more oil in January 2009 than any other month in the US history. Looking at the long term trend this is a true statement
Perhaps Obama should have elaborated better
"imports peaked in 2005 and has seen a slight decline due to higher prices leading to downward pressure on demand; regardless imports in the last few years has been greater than any other period of US history before!!"

George DubYa did a great job at this. No matter what, republicans are going to tack the effects of Bush's spending on Obama if shit is going bad. On the reverse they will argue George Dubya's policies is who we can thank if the economy recovers due to the lag and cycles stuff AM I RITE GUys?

you are 100% right though. Lets not forget the republican controlled congress though. The GOP can not take credit for Clinton's moderate enactments his 2nd term or for balancing the budget; yet not take responsibility for legislation passed that would have been a factor in today's situation...

I don't belong to either party, thank you. And if we're on the subject, it was Obama who looked over to his democrat cronies and made a clear point that he inherited the economic crisis from the republicans...just to gin up their cheering.

His [Jindal's] "ideas" are the same tired Reaganite bullshit that always gets vomited up by Republicans when they have nothing of their own to say. Government is bad, taxes are bad, military is good, blah blah blah.
Yeah that's exactly what we need is to reduce the scope of government when the fucking Dow is at 7 fucking thousand. Jesus Christ.

i didn't say you belonged to any party. i said that you framed things around party.
and again, even in that part of the speech he equally laid the blame on previous actions as well as the circumstances that no one foresaw. it was the congressional dems that did the cheering. he just responded to that.
the only thing that seemed like a direct jab at bush was the torture statement. and good on him for that.2/25/2009 8:55:38 PM |

Just listened to the first half of it, and I don't think he did badly. His voice sounds like the narrator to a children's cartoon, and I think he framed himself too much as an immigrant, but I think his speech will resonate well in a genuine way with the existing Republican base.

Are you familiar with the U.S. Constitution? Specifically, the enumerated powers and the 10th Amendment? Furthermore, I would say that your sarcastic statement is, in fact, pretty much accurate (with the caveat that there is a point at which you can go overboard with the military, although it is one of the few things that is a legitimate responsibility of the Federal gov't. Also, U.S. military spending, while ENORMOUS, is actually not that big as a percentage of our likewise enormous GDP.)

Well, the DJIA was at 7800 only about a week ago before more details came out about what the feds planned to do.

Ok -- so now that we've established that the federal government is allowed to pass such legislation (which I guess is what your argument was against?)...

that's what all the conservatives say. but if i understand correctly it was more of the private institutions that made the bigger (and dumber) risks on bad mortgages.
i think a large part of the blame should be placed on the ratings agencies and the banks for encouraging them to inflate ratings.3/1/2009 7:33:39 PM |

Fannie and Freddie are a conservative talking point and scapegoat.
There is plenty of blame to go around, and Fannie and Freddie deserve their fair share of it, but their share is overstated by Republicans simply trying to blame everything on the government. After all, Fannie/Freddie were not on the front lines and never sold a single mortgage to anybody in the country. 3/1/2009 7:47:13 PM |

yes, but they sure as hell bought up a ton of them. You don't that if they weren't around to buy up those bad mortgages that people would have thought twice about making them in the first place? 3/1/2009 7:56:50 PM |
