I agree Eric Berry will be up for the Heisman because he had some pretty amazing plays and numbers last year and he's a great safety. But those number are somewhat skewed because Tenn didn't have an offense and thus the defense was on the field the whole game.
With that being said, Eric Berry will be in the Heisman talk up until the Tenn Florida game at which time Florida will run up the score (Who knows maybe they'll score 100 points). After that Tenn and Eric Berry will fall into oblivion.
And people say NC State fans are dreamers 7/24/2009 11:06:29 AM |

^^^ so if they were on the field so much the defense would be tired so those numbers are actually lower than if they had a good offense. And if they had a good offense they would have been in closer games and teams wouldnt just run the ball on them, thus his numbers could have been higher.
Not saying he is going to win it, just saying there isnt a better player in college football (there are several that are right there with him), and he is every bit the player Woodson was... 7/24/2009 3:06:04 PM |

^ You're arguing that defensive numbers are based on a factor of fatigue rather than the amount of plays a defensese in involved in. If Tenn defense stays on field, Eric Berry is involved with more defensive plays, thus his defensive totals are higher because he has more chances to make an impact on the game.
He's a good player and a great NFL prospect but the best player in college football???
I guess we'll have to see how things play out. 7/24/2009 3:47:37 PM |
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
you have never heard of defensive players getting tired when they are on the field for a long time?
and I am halfway joking, I don't think either argument really means much... I am sure over the course of the year all that evens out for the most part from team to team.

you can also nix CJ Spiller, fwiw. he stands no chance. but i will cheer. 7/27/2009 8:27:19 AM |

jaybee im speaking this all now... 99% of the time when you get into an issue YES you know what you are talking about and back it up and i USUALLY just troll and fart around for fun but.... this time you are not right.
now you didn't know this because you are using stats to compare berry and woodson but...
woodson ALSO played wide receiver AND returned punts for the Maize n Blue. not only did he do those things, but he was an unbelievably high caliber athlete for those positions as well as defense, his 2-way playing won him the heisman
AND... Woodson made the Heisman-like plays throughout the season
now we all know you are thick and will contest this but... this link shows those plays
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1JyhMIJXKE&feature=PlayList&p=5E80EF19EB67A14F&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=33
that link should really help, if not... at least everyone else knows the truth and good luck with eric berry this season jaybee 7/27/2009 11:09:24 AM |

he won the Heisman his sophomore season? Funny, I didnt realize that...
I am comparing what Berry has done in his first two seasons (which is all that we have to go by) vs. Woodson did in his first two... up to that point Berry is better, and I dont think its even close. Hell, the year Woodson won it he wasnt even in the discussion until the second half of the season, much less during his sophomore year.
And once again, the kick return/offense shit is bullshit, because Champ Bailey did more in that aspect the very next year, was just as good on defense, and was against better competition, and didnt even get a peak at the Heisman trophy.

Eric Berry http://espndb.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=235998
Charles Woodson http://bentley.umich.edu/athdept/football/fballam/aawoodsn.htm
Tackles (freshman year, sophomore year): Berry - 86, 72 Woodson - 66, 69
INTs Berry - 5, 7 Woodson - 5, 5
INT Return Yards Berry - 222, 265 Woodson - 46, 28
TDs scored Berry - 1, 2 Woodson - 0, 2 (and this is counting offense)
Sacks Berry - 3 Woodson - 0, 0
And here comes the "but but but one is a safety and one is a CB" argument. Ok, we will go with that, so Berry's tackles should be higher, which they are, but Woodson's INTs should be higher, which they arent, and since CB (especially Heisman trophy winning dual threat CBs) are faster and more eleusive than safeties, then Woodson would have more INT return yards, which he doesnt

Safeties typically have more picks than corners
Good corners get thrown away from, making interceptions rare
While safety's can play centerfield and roam to where the ball is headed 7/27/2009 11:50:40 AM |
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
that does happen some, but I wouldn't say typically (there have been thousands of safeties in Div I football over the years, and none have the return yards/INTs that Berry had in his first two years when adding all FOUR of their years together, hes only a few yards behind the all time career INT return yards record after only 2 years)... and wouldnt have happened Woodson's first two years

With the return yardage argument, Corners usually get their TDs on WR screens where they step in front of the ball and have a clear path to the end zone
When a corner is covering someone in man and makes the pick, he often gets tackled right away
Whereas as a safety gets most of their picks on overthows and deflections, so when the catch the ball they aren't in the immediate vicinity of any defender and thus have more room to setup a return
I haven't seen Berry enough over the past two seasons to know how he gets most of his INTs, however
[Edited on July 27, 2009 at 11:56 AM. Reason : I mean Ed reed gets a lot of long returns and Champ Bailey doesn't for these very reasons] 7/27/2009 11:55:13 AM |

The interception argument is somewhat skewed due to the fact that Berry is facing teams running the spread and throwing the ball all over the field. The Big Ten has always been a "run first" mentality therefore leaving Woodson with fewer opportunities.
It would be interesting to see an avg attempts for the QB's in the Big Ten the year Woodson won vs the avg attempts of SEC QB's last year. 7/27/2009 2:37:01 PM |

Oh I totally agree that he wont win it, no way, not even close.
I am just saying if that sham Charles Woodson won it Berry SHOULD have a chance to win it, but he wont, no defensive player has aside from that one fucked up year has had a chance.
And as someone else said, UT will be way too shitty of a team this year anyways.
