Just got an email that the Big O resigned
Quote : | "To the Students, Faculty and Friends of NC State University:
In a few moments, we will be announcing that James Oblinger has chosen to resign as chancellor of NC State. I wanted you to be the first to hear this disappointing news.
Chancellor Oblinger cares deeply for NC State. He has devoted 23 years to our university and his leadership will be greatly missed.
One of things I admire most about Jim Oblinger is that he has always put the university's interests ahead of his own. He is resigning because he does not want the ongoing controversy surrounding the university's hiring and employment of Mary Easley to continue detracting from the important work of our faculty and staff. He wants the university to move forward, and that is what we must do.
A copy of the official announcement of the chancellor's resignation, along with a copy of documents that NC State submitted to the U.S. Attorney's office today, can be found on the university's Web site at 9:30 this morning at http://www.ncsu.edu.
I will continue to keep you informed about these developments and our search for a new chancellor in the coming weeks. If you have questions or comments, you can send them to me at: web_feedback@ncsu.edu.

Prof. Nielsen just had his extra-buyout deal that he did with Oblinger revoked. He's back ot the 6-month deal that was in his contract. 6/16/2009 9:33:25 PM |

^^^ Why would you think that? He probably hasn't taught a class in years. I bet he currently brings in zero research dollars. Any department he moves into is going to see him as nothing but dead wight and he'll probably stay that way for years. 6/17/2009 12:38:15 PM |

Reading from his bio, he teaches courses for US Fish and Wildlife and the US Forest Service, and he's a member of the Board of Director of a few Forest-y sounding organizations. And he's written a few textbooks. I'm just saying he probably falls higher up the ladder than some assistant or associate prof.
He's also a Cubs fan. 6/17/2009 1:14:13 PM |

^^, ^^^ Looking at his CV, he hasn't graduated a student since 1998 and since he's been at NCSU. Having students is an indication of an active research program. You don't start a research program out of thin air and I'm not willing to bet that Natural Resources is going to cough up start-up funds on top of his salary so he can restart his research group. It will take a while for him to switch from administrator mode to researcher mode assuming that he does it at all. This argument is also valid for Oblinger.
Nielsen and Oblinger still create a lot of drag on university resources because they only quit their administrative tasks and still elected to maintain some sort of position at the university. Basically, they were able to drop their responsibilities with only a minor reduction in compensation. Imagine being able to tell your boss that you're not going to do your job any more, that you're moving to the empty office down the hall to twiddle your thumbs all day, and that you still expect to receive 60% of your salary. 6/17/2009 4:30:23 PM |
