Going out for breakfast with a friend for their birthday
...I've realized that I know of NOTHING in Raleigh that could serve even as a poor substitute for Early Girl Eatery or Early Bird Diner

Why do my two favorite breakfast places both have to be four hours away?

^ adorable

^^^ Dude, ambrosia, Early Girl Eatery sounds awesome! I'll be in Asheville in 3 weeks. Will have to check it out. This sounds divine:

Fried Green Tomato Napoleon
Fried green tomatoes layered with fresh basil and herbed goat cheesem topped with salsa and balsamic dressing, served over grits

Early Girl Benny
Grit cakes topped with tomato, spinach, poached eggs, tomato gravy and avocado, served with toast

Mushroom Puffs
Baked local shiitake and button mushrooms, served with fried goat cheese, raspberry vinaigrette and crostinis

^^^^ I'm glad you like the sound of it

Their pumpking ginger bread is FTW.

I had leftover tofu korma with cauliflower and broccoli, and some freezerburnt pierogies that I peeled open for the inside.

All told, what I could eat probably amounted to <3/4cup of food. I'm about to say 'fuck it' and make mashed potatoes loaded with cheese.

My teeth hurt SO. BAD. that I'm considering vicodin and yoinking some of my husband's codeine cough syrup to knock me out so I don't have to deal with it

[Edited on December 9, 2009 at 10:21 AM. Reason : Early Girl is so fantastic. You will not be disappointed.]

^ Dude, you should make mashed cauliflower. It's a healthy substitute for mashed potatoes. Here's the recipe:

I don't have enough cauliflower

Also, I'm looking for calorie-dense foods with longevity right now: eating hurtss o fucking bad. Then I have to spend 10-15 minutes cleaning my teeth and braces. I'm lazy So I'm trying to eat what I need, but eat as infrequently as possible (see my post in the diabeetus thread about problems with hypoglycemia)

I'll get back on track with proper eating when eating is no longer a chore

Yay! It's slightly different from mashed potatoes, but it definitely still fits into the comfort food category.

Healthy comfort foods ftw.

hey xtine, when i was on mushy foods after surgery i ate fat free refried beans topped with a little shredded cheese, heated up so the cheese melts, then topped with some sour cream and salsa. it was muy bueno. and the beans have fiber/protein

^^Good call. Many, many, many thanks.

Especially since I have black refried beans!

I was actually thinking of you at 7am this morning: I wanted some kind of breakfast shake, and I got NOTHING. "Wonder if Jaime will let me have some protein powder?"

I hope this doesn't last but another day or two. I can deal with the lack of grinding surfaces for chewing (and that's a good thing, because that's going to be in place for months). It's the part where even thinking about my teeth makes them hurt is what's so and that should just be the 'da fuck did you put on us, wench?' reaction, not a long-term issue.

girl, we've got probably 5 or 6 flavors of protein powder in the pantry - and it's the good stuff too. i'd be happy to bring some baggies to you!

i'll also bring you a few of the prepared shakes that i have, they're Oh Yeah! brand and it's 32g of protein in 20oz - and only 220 calories or something. they're so yummy.

i'll PM you

this thread makes me want Early Girl Eatery. Went there over New Years. Had a delicious pan fried mountain trout with two eggs over easy, grits, toast and their ridiculously nom-nomable raspberry jam.

holy shit. I need to go back to Asheville.
