I requested it. And this is part of the reason why:

Quote : | "a few of us on this site grew up in south durham not too far from where southpoint mall is now. its a nice area, the neighborhood i grew up in was all rtp commuters." |
The Southpoint area is fine. I live not too far from there and in over a year living in the area, the crime map shows no incidents whatsoever in my neighborhood and not much in the vicinity. I'm aware of a few car break-ins that aren't showing up on the map for whatever reason, but that can happen anywhere.
The whole city is not bad, it just gets a reputation because some of the "bad" areas really are bad. But even then it's not like you're going to be minding your own business and get assaulted for no good reason. My gf had to travel into some of the lowest-income parts of the city when she was doing social work, and said she never once felt threatened or seriously uncomfortable (this was in the daytime, of course). About the worst she ran into was a bum making a bunch of lewd comments at her and that was on the steps of the courthouse downtown.
There are always random incidents, and if that was the situation with the dude in Red Lobster, I feel bad for him and his family. But a random incident can happen in a high-class area as easily as a low-class one. Sure the probability might be a bit different but you can only do so much to keep yourself safe from those situations.8/18/2010 10:31:45 AM |

^ It's true. And I'm not suggesting that Durham is war zone or that people not go there--I still visit from time to time.
But at the other end of the spectrum are some here and elsewhere who poo-poo anything bad that happens in Durham--I often feel this comes out of some sort of PC nonsense. Durham has real problems and pretending they don't exist won't help anyone. 8/18/2010 1:14:26 PM |

It happened around 10 p.m. Sunday at the restaurant on Durham Chapel Hill Boulevard. Officials say three masked men entered the restaurant carrying guns and stole money from the business.
No one was injured.
Earlier this month at the same Red Lobster, 52-year-old Larry Timberlake was shot and killed in the parking lot. Police say they have not filed charges in the shootings and need help with their investigation. If you know anything, please call Durham police." |

Quote : | "2010 MSN Real Estate Most Livable Bargain Markets Durham, N.C. Tobacco may have launched this city in North Carolina's Piedmont region, but Durham's economy is now solidly based in science.
The hub is Research Triangle Park, the largest research park in the U.S., which is home to more than 170 companies, many of them life-sciences or information-technology firms.
Durham claims the title City of Medicine, with more than 300 medical and health-related companies and medical practices with a combined payroll that exceeds $1.5 billion annually, according to city data.
These companies are drawn by one of the largest concentrations of college graduates and post-graduate degree holders in the country, many of them from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and Duke University, which are also large employers and provide much of the city's entertainment.
Unlike the nearby city of Raleigh to the west, Durham is much smaller and more organized around universities and hospitals. And its median home price is affordable to many at $177,410.
"It is a tremendous bang for the buck that is offered in Durham" says real-estate agent Larry Toller, who moved to Durham from New England seven years ago. "You can get a very nice home for $250,000.
Cons: Hot, humid summers; above-average crime rate.

BTW, what's "partisan" about it? That Durham is run mostly by Democrats? Actually, I never brought that up. 9/6/2010 1:37:39 AM |
