You can just request an invitation from the Google Voice site. It takes like five days, or at least it did for me.

I had to mod my pap2. I got it from ebay and it's a complete piece of shit. It overheated in 15min and then stopped functioning, making me troubleshoot for hours for no reason. Long story short, put a heatsink on the proc and cut out the shit blocking the vents.

it's not even worth it anymore. Gizmo5 turned into jewish bait and switchers and calls are limited to 3 minutes now.

so gizmo is a complete piece of shit. they're completely overloaded. I now pay callcentric $7.50 a month and have access to 911. unfortunately I only have unlimited incoming calls and have to use a browser to initiate calls. This isn't much of a problem with the 2 places I'd use it in my house having computers in them and my ps3 having a nice keyboard connected.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty excited about this addition. This basically means free texting as long as you have push email on your phone.

Texting should already be free - it costs carriers fractions of cents for messaging

fractions of cents * millions of customers * millions of messages = millions of dollars

Yeah, but I personally don't like using the SMS function of the GV Dialer (iphone) or GV Mobile site. I would rather have it delivered over push email.

yeah texting is a real mess with gvoice because it doesnt integrate with the phone's contacts and so conversation tracking is hard on phones and texting new people whbose 406 number you may not have saved yet is tough

I just got signed up for google voice and I'm trying to figure out what I can do with this that's of any use to me

1) I can call anyone in the US for free for as long as I want, who cares, I already have a cellphone plan that has no roaming nationwide, no long distance, and virtually unlimited minutes so this isn't of any of use to me

2) Free SMS, again who cares, I have unlimited SMS on my cellphone

3) It will ring all of my phones and transcribe my voicemails, not interested, I only have one phone, my cellphone. Even if I did have other phones that would require me to give out a new number to everyone that has my number and then my voicemails would no longer work with the visual voicemail feature of my phone plus I would have some people sending texts to me GV number while some would still send them to my cell number and it would just be a mess

So what can I do with this that's of any use, what is all the hype about? I do travel internationally a few times a year, is there any way I can use this to make and receive free VoIP calls internationally on my cell via wifi?

I use my personal cell phone for business and this affords me a more professional approach regarding voicemails, call screening, and a no weekend ring schedule.

i agree, for me personally its not worth the hassle to use google voice. maybe i'm just lame but most communications come to me via e-mail. the people who used to call me too much i've told them to just email me and i don't get that many calls.

^^^ why did you sign up to begin with? It tells you pretty much everything you can do with it before you even request an invite.

Who cares? people with limited or no sms.

Personally, I have a non-raleigh/NC area code. So I have a 919 google voice number that I give to people who may not be able to/want to call long distance. I also use it for people I want to give my number to but don't want them to have it forever/weekends/evenings/etc. you can easily block a number and they get a message as if it's been disconnected. or it just goes straight to voicemail, and you can personalize voicemails for specific numbers. I use this b/c some folks have my number for work related things, except I don't want them calling me in the evenings and on the weekend (and they would)... this solves that problem.

I pretty much give it to anyone new i meet/give my number to. That way if I decide I don't want to hear from them for some reason, it's an easy fix.

^My thoughts exactly. I actually had the whole "Why did you even waste an invite if you're just going to bitch about every feature?" speech typed out but I decided not to post it. It's not like the service hasn't been floating around for two years or anything.

Google Voice Offers Voicemail Without Changing Your Number
http://lifehacker.com/5390308/google-voice-offers-voicemail-without-changing-your-number

Note: Sprint is currently rolling out the ability to enable free call forwarding. Until that is completed, this feature may not work or you may be charged every time someone leaves a voicemail.

How is this different from just forwarding your voicemail on your phone to GV? I've been doing that for weeks.

at what point will 'phone service' mean you just get a data plan from a provider and all voice calls are over VOIP? or will that never happen.

I would say at the very least your google voice account will recognize your no answer forward and directly greet the caller rather than put them through another set of 5 or 6 rings.

I'm sure there are other advantages to having your existing number integrated into the service rather than having some sort of potential loop set up? I haven't messed with the service enough to really know because of the .20c/min forward sprint imposes.

Personal # -> Seamless GV Account Services

vs

Personal # -> GV # -> Personal # -> GV Account

really? i don't have that many issues except when you first pick up a call, it takes a second or two for the connection to be made i think.

and oh yeah, i forgot to mention adding gvoice to my sprint pick 3 - all my calls are free lol, so definitely not going back to using my sprint number
