Bob and the Showgram had this guy on this morning. They tried to call the mayor and called him out for ignoring their calls.

I guess he just wants Cary to buy his house so he can leave. If that happens, I'd bet money on him buying another house in Cary.

actually, that information is available to the public at the Wake County courthouse. if someone actually gave a shit about doing something other than bashing the town of Cary, they'd look it up. I can fucking guarantee you that no on in the city of Cary has given up land for new road construction without getting paid a large chunk of change for it. This douchebag just happened to have an ugly house that's now lacks a front yard, and he's coming to the realization that he can't sell it for anywhere near the tax value in this economy. It will probably come out later that he let the issue go to condemnation court in the first place to let a judge decide on a settlement.

the pictures seem to make it perfectly clear than any flooding issues the guy has now were either pre-existing or caused by his neighbors diverting water into his house. he just needed something else to bitch about to make this story get news attention.

[Edited on August 4, 2009 at 9:05 AM. Reason : ^there are places an hour from raleigh where the closest grocery store is a 15 mile drive.]

I doubt he had much choice.

if you gave people a choice, then no infrastructure would ever get built in this country. that may sound great to you, but I actually like not having fucked up traffic and the utility infrastructure of a third world country.

there's also less land draining towards his property. the new road has curb and gutter; I don't remember the old road having that and just ran off down the hill.

im basing my opinion purely on these pictures and you can not see any gutters close to his place.

you can see the curb but i would think w/out gutters that would be useless with a drive way having such an incline

if the gutters werent dumping the water on the foundation in the front of the house and routed the water anywhere else he'd have less of an issue

^^^yeah, I think the gutter that dumps water into his driveway from his carport and then lets it run back into the house is causing the flooding. You can tell from the before pictures that the gutter and that portion of the driveway has always been like that, so the construction isn't causing it.

[Edited on August 4, 2009 at 9:17 AM. Reason : ^he should have figured that out 20 years ago, because the road didn't change it]

you buy drain lines, in this case he gets some that are 30' long, bury them and route them around the side of the house

hell, with the car he's got parked in there he needs to get a french drain installed

I thought this guy had a case, but he is just looking for a free lunch.

He had "pre-existing" conditions before they did any road work.

I hope they hang him by the balls for the sign ordinance violation.

i'm not sure how i feel about this

even if he had problems with water before the construction, the changes are very likely contributing to them (again, they may not be the sole source of problems, but they may have been the tipping point)

also, his house now looks even more like crap, due to the construction...who wants to buy a house down a hill like that? i'd be pissed, too

not hatin on his car, just saying if he can afford one he can afford to do the work to fix the house.

in 36 days the city would own his house though...

when the town of Cary came through there and said "we're widening the road, here's what we're doing to your property" - did the guy get the option to sell the house to the city at that point? or was it just "we'll pay you X dollars and you'll be happy with that"?

Wait, are you people actually siding with the Town of Cary?

Don't get me wrong, I have lived in Cary my whole life and love it, but Cary needs to address this issue in a much different way. Fining someone back into the stone age just makes them seem like the overlords that they really are.

i don't think they'll buy his house under any circumstances

i can see them paying for a home inspection and proper drainage installation, though

cary is not governed by a bunch of pushovers...they truly think they're better than everyone else

1. The road appears to be curb and gutter with raised driveway entrances, thus water isn't entering his property from the road, unless that road becomes a river (literally) during storm events.

2. Runoff from his yard/driveway towards his house could be an issue for huge storm events

3. His roof drains appear to be causing his problem. They are directed straight into his yard, which is sloping towards his house. Some landscape drain lines or french drains (depending on soils, unless he routes them subsurface) would do the trick

4. It appears as though there is a rip-rap lined channel leading from his driveway to his house, though I can't tell for sure. If it is, he would need to route that to the side of the house or tie it into the french drains and route that, subsurface, to the side of the house and have it daylight there.

5. It appears this guy sort of wants free lunch; water isn't his real issue, it's his loss of property.

But hey, I'm only a water resources/stormwater EI, so what do I know?

Cary will tell you how to paint your house, cut your lawn, tend to your pets, and which community pools you can join. Every minute detail has a guideline and a policy, even if it's not enforced.

The Town of Cary prides itself on assimilating you to it's will. There is no alternative, you either conform, or you are bled dry of your real estate until you go bankrupt.
