*sigh* I knew yall would take that the opposite way and run with it. There's a difference between saying "oh God" in a way of expressing hope (not to mention, I said etc, because she said more than that) and saying "God damn" in a bad way.

But yall keep on thinking your bad thoughts about prayer and I'll keep on thinking my good ones.

I should know better than to comment on a thread like this, but it is particularly disheartening. I don't know what's worse, the trolling or the weak arguments in support of prayer.

Prayer is integral to the life of a believer. It has nothing to do with passing along information to God, because - even as the antagonists seem to understand in all their sarcasm - He knows all. It is a crucial part in the maturation of a Christian - it is a conduit straight to Him in which we are to continually praise Him, thank Him, confess our sins, and ask for His help and guidance. It keeps us focused on His will and on our dependence on Him. It is also COMMANDED by God in the Bible:
"Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." -I Thessalonians 5:16-18
"With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints" -Ephesians 6:18

God will answer our prayers, IF they are according to His will. The Bible does not specify whether he answers the prayers of unbelievers, but it is clear on this: if you are praying with the right motives, He answers you, and if not, He doesn't. If you are a true Christian, your prayers will probably aligned with God's will, and hence your prayers will be answered (adoration and praise, thankfulness, confession of sin):
"This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us." -I John 5:14
"If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear; but certainly God has heard; He has given heed to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, Who has not turned away my prayer Nor His lovingkindness from me." -Psalm 66:18-20

However, if you are living in sin, then your prayers will most likely be selfish and misguided and therefore most likely won't be aligned with God's plans and they won't be answered.
"You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures." -James 4:3
"But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear." -Isaiah 59:2
"He who turns away his ear from listening to the law, Even his prayer is an abomination." -Proverbs 28:9

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." -Philippians 4:6-7

The answers are always in the Word

Yeah, and neither are an indicator of belief in god.
How fucking stupid are you?
If you want to have belief in god with no proof, that's fine, but now you want to believe that others believe in god with no proof? Where does it end? This is a common problem with you god-followers -- you don't limit what you believe without proof to god -- you start believing all kinds of shit without proof. You are nothing but fools.

I've never quite understood people getting so ridiculously bent out of shape about people saying "goddamn". They invoke the Bible's instruction not to "take the Lord's name in vain", but I'm pretty sure that saying "goddamn" has little or nothing to do with what's being referenced there.

This is pretty much my problem with christianity.

If its not according to his 'will' then whats the point of praying in the first place? Furthermore, I have a question, is it in your will that i make it to heaven? Is it in your will for me to have some life changing moment where i start to believe in this bullshit? Or do i just go to hell because i wasn't in your will?

I haven't talked to her in a long time, but we grew up near Sanford, so it could be.

Please provide evidence that this has happened and evidence that the person actually didn't believe in god and wasn't just a kid raised in a religious home who was rebelling and pretending to be an atheist. Thank you.

That is actually a point of contention across various Christian denominations, particularly on the Protestant side of the house (not sure how the different sorts of Catholocism shake out).

I know that Presbyterians are big into that Calvinist shit most of the time. Baptists, for example, would generally not agree with that at all.

^^I'll admit it. It usually goes something like this: "God, you know I don't believe in you and simulatenously despise you, but look, I'm in a jam, and I could really use some help right now. And you fucking owe me, dude. I mean, Jesus Christ, you've fucked me so bad. So come on, just help a playa out. For once! Help me out."

I'm fairly certain that the deity I despise and don't believe in is totally cool with my attitude. We've got a good thing going, God and I.
