I've been a big fan of the hunter because of all the bonuses they get on pistols. Right now I've got my Lv47 hunter with a well-rounded weapon setup, and he gets bonuses on every one if them.
- Sniper Rifle (high damage, high accuracy, pretty good fire rate)
- High-damage and High-fire-rate Repeater ("Cold Torment", seems like most with this name have good damage and fire rate, without too bad accuracy)
- MASHER (these things are insane -- Revolvers that fire like shotguns, and are typically more accurate... added to all the sniper's +accuracy skills and the accuracy added by leveling his skill with pistols... basically it amounts to a shotgun which gets headshots with every single bullet of the spread... or a revolver that does over 800 base damage with decent accuracy... which ever way you want to spin it, the thing is disgustingly good)
- The orange/yellow Revolver with corrosive damage x4 + "Give Sick" red text 11/18/2009 1:53:38 AM |

my biggest complaint with this game is the totally random stats you get on the guns. at the end of the game i was still using a couple of weapons that i had found half-way through because for whatever reason all the newer guns i got didn't have any better stats on them. they should have implemented something to give you a little bit of control over what stats go on your weapons, especially for the few parts where you really need an elemental type weapon because it sucks using a horribly underpowered acid weapon just to fight guys with armor.
overall i enjoyed the game though, especially since i got to play it for free (thanks for your awesome 7-day rental return policy gamestop!) 11/23/2009 11:01:20 PM |

really?
I thought that meant if you hit a critical shot it multiplied the damange by that much
You're telling me if something says 86 damage and then flashes X 11, that I'm shooting 11 shots that EACH do 86 damage?
dang, I misread that 12/2/2009 2:31:07 PM |
tromboner950 All American 9667 Posts user info edit post |
^Yeah. It's often REALLY good on revolvers (and they'll be named mashers).
Crit damage is listed down with other bonuses as "+150% critical damage" and that sort of thing. Usually just on snipers. If it doesn't have anything listed, it just does a default critical hit multiplier (which is probably something like 2x or 1.5x damage, but I'm not sure... it does vary by enemy though).
Also, note that with mashers, they've usually got a stat like "-50% damage" or something, but that's already calculated into the damage as listed... as are all damage/accuracy/fire rate modifiers.

The only thing that sucks about this game is that is pays to play with other people, but there is no way to evenly or fairly distribute the loot amongst the players. I played a little bit online today, but I can tell you right now thats probably the first and only time I'll ever do it, unless I know the person I am playing with in real life. 12/10/2009 4:37:17 PM |

^The ninja claptrap is just a joke.
[SPOILERS] The guardian angel is impossible to "meet", seeing as she's a program in a satellite orbiting the planet... as is implied by the ending sequence. [/SPOILERS]
And yeah, the boss drops nothing good. Oh well. Once you start the second playthrough everything starts dropping better stuff and all the shops get a massive upgrade.
And once you beat the boss the second time, you unlock a mode where everything in the game is scaled around level 50 and you can re-fight every boss at least once. Haven't gone back to fight the final boss yet but since the high-quality item drop rate for everything gets upgraded at that point, I assume his does too.
The most reliable way I've found to get orange weapons/items (besides constantly checking every weapon shop you see) is actually to fight BadAss/BadMutha/[whatever the 50+ version is] enemies.
I'm surprised by all the people expecting something more from the ending, actually... yeah, it's disappointing compared to games that had much of a story throughout, but this game didn't. The story is on about the same level as Diablo II in terms of complexity, and it advertises itself as such.

Overall the loot system in this game doesn't live up to its potential. It feels like you are about to get something badass and it never happens. Yes I have played the game enough (multiple playthroughs with 3 characters) to make this call. You can get modded weapons, even on the 360, that are so strong it makes the game boring. I got a modded weapon from a guy that has like 1600x9 damage with 1600% enhanced damage. The game is not really fun with the weapon. About the DLC, no, its not worth it unless you are a real fan of this game, I have both DLCs and I wish I would have saved my money. Its not that they are bad or suck, they are just not fun as the regular game is on its own. 1/7/2010 11:51:30 PM |

I understand what the angel was at the end, and though I was pretty sure it was a joke, I was hoping that the ninja claptrap was some extension of the storyline that you could optionally continue. My only point about being letdown was the hype at the beginning about the vault = loot, power, pussy, and then you beat the Destroyer and never even get to see an end sequence. I get to take the fucking key back to Tannis. Wow, lucky me!
So don't get me wrong, I really loved the game, even though I soloed it, but just a little letdown is all. 1/8/2010 7:59:34 AM |

I'm a level 18 soldier. I've been playing almost completely single-player so far; although, I did some of the earlier missions with a buddy of mine. I chose soldier because ordinarily the shotgun is my go-to weapon in shooters, but I've been having my guy snipe from a distance than handle folks with a quick repeater or smg. The shotguns that I've found just don't do the same amount of damage without heavy recoil or slow reload. Still, I'm loving it, and I'm thinking that I'll do a lot more co-op my second time through 1/8/2010 11:48:30 AM |

I feel the same way. There was not even remotely enough explanation as to what the vault actually IS, much less why there's some huge monster guarding it. I can't help but wonder if there's going to be a sequel to this and how it would be handled from a story perspective. If the vault only opens every 200 years, then why are people constantly in search of it? The game's story started out fairly strong, but it quickly fizzled out. I'm still playing it through to reach 50 (I'm 42 now and only just killed Sledhge on the second playthrough), but I can't see playing it beyond that. I'm on the fence about the DLC, but haven't bought any yet.1/8/2010 12:45:26 PM |

^[more spoilers] The vault is a prison for the ancient god-like destroyer, and the angel ends up sort of tricking you by playing on the promises of fame/wealth/etc that everyone else is hoping for, because "you're the only one who could have done it" (or some such similar bullshit). The monster isn't guarding the vault at all, the monster IS the vault. Everyone was in search of it before almost all of them left the planet because they figured it didn't exist... the main character and the russian arms dealer guy (and Tannis, and crimson lance commander woman) are really the only four people on the planet who still care much about it... everyone else left on the planet is either insane, a bandit, a lance mercenary, or too poor to leave. And Tannis only relatively recently discovered the whole 200 years thing, so virtually no one knew about that technicality while they were still looking for the vault... and depending on the timeline of Tannis's tapes (I don't remember the order well enough), the 200 years discovery may have even been part of the reason that Dahl corporation just said "fuck it, we're leaving". [/more spoilers]
It's not explained well at all in-game, but there you go.
Anyway, even from the beginning the story is incredibly weak... everything comes from the characters (which are actually quite good) and setting, but plot-wise you're mostly just wandering from place to place just doing whatever you're told for no better reason than "because it might help to be nice to the locals" (roughly)... and because you need cash, but that's never really a plot concern. Even after you meat Tannis, and start finding the vault keys, the plot is never really much stronger than "There is mysterious vault. Must find mysterious vault because people are telling me there's good shit inside." The game makes it fairly obvious from the beginning that no one really gives a shit about depth of plot... which is fine, because it's a pure loot RPG that uses well-made FPS gameplay. It's Diablo 2 with guns (and even D2's plot, despite all the runaround, didn't amount to much more than "Demons evil, kill big demons").
Though I agree, the ending could have been made more explanatory.

Interesting. How did you come by this explanation? I've only ever played with Roland, so do the other characters' stories provide more story? Is there any significance to the "angel" being from Hyperion? And are the Guardians simply there to prevent people from getting the vault key? There could have been so much more story potential with all of this... 1/8/2010 2:40:25 PM |
tromboner950 All American 9667 Posts user info edit post |
None of the characters get better story exposition, unfortunately.
Not sure about how Hyperion relates to the angel. Most likely, they just needed to give a corporation name to the satellite. It's also entirely possible that the angel isn't made by Hyperion at all, but was some sort of ancient alien sentience or program that basically just hijacks the satellite. Maybe it uses a Hyperion satellite because they're the ones who control the infrastructure grid on the planet (allowing her to see/communicate with you more easily), but I'm pretty sure Dahl are the ones who did most of that. Dunno. The prophecy sort of thing that russian arms dealer man mentions to you in the intro generally supports the idea that the angel is something hijacking a hyperion satellite.
Honestly I'm not sure about the guardians. I think they just wanted to prevent anyone (specifically the Lance) from opening it so that the monster couldn't escape. They might even just be the ghosts of the alien race and attack everything they see (since there were some kind of alien ghosts in one of the much earlier Dahl Headland quests), though the different creature names seem to indicate that the ones you fight at the end of the game are actually real.
Most of the background exposition of the planet's gold rush to the vault search to the corporations abandoning everything and leaving the trash and the criminals they'd hired as mining crews... that just comes from listening to the Tannis tapes in the three quests to collect them, and a bit of other material. The explanation of the Destroyer is just what I picked up from everything the angel says near the end. She basically admits that the whole point of finding the vault was to kill the creature, though not quite explicitly. I might have also read the quest text when I turned the key in to Tannis, but I don't remember it specifically.
They could have done a LOT more with the backstory than just refer to it in the Tannis tapes. The whole gold rush thing is decently interesting material. If they were to make another, they could plausibly make a prequel in which you're a vault hunter DURING the corporate gold rush... that could be cool. 1/8/2010 3:12:28 PM |

Just started playing this a few days ago
Level 32, near the end of the game, and a few levels ago I found this gold SMG called a combustion hellfire. Does crazy fire DOT, plus unlike other guns the DOT effects stack! I'm thinking about not using it, because it's making the game trivially easy. 2-3 shots on each crimson lance soldier and I can just duck around a corner and wait for them to die.

Quote : | " Third Borderlands DLC loaded with new vehicles, mechs
* By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot * Posted Jan 28, 2010 5:13 pm PT
The Secret Armory of General Knoxx will be the "largest" add-on to date, says Gearbox; will raise level cap, focus on introduction of new weaponry.
One week ago, Gearbox Software revealed a third downloadable add-on was in the works for the studio's double-platinum action-RPG Borderlands. Without revealing a name, a member of the development staff did say the expansion would raise the game's current level 50 cap and also be the "biggest" DLC yet.
A Crimson Lance mech? Uh-oh.
Today, Gearbox named the expansion, which will be called The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. As the name implies, the expansion will focus on providing players with new weapons, presumably from the weapons locker of the aforementioned military officer. Gearbox said the add-on's quests will be geared at players level 34-50, but did not give a release date or price for the new content.
New vehicles also appear to be in store.
Two shots accompanying the announcement indicated that General Knoxx is likely a commander of the Crimson Lance, the elite corporate army featured in the latter levels of the original game. One shot shows that the already heavily armed Lance troopers will be backed up by full-blown mechs with thick armor and nasty ranged and melee weapons. Another screen shows players driving a new type of vehicle, a six-wheeled off-road truck, battling what appear to be giant spiders in the desert. " |
