haha they are gromitts- they switch between mittens and fingerless gloves (that have a thumb hole). They give you great dexterity when out doing stuff- mittens for cold, and fingerless to do fine control stuff.

Heh.

I wear cashmere lined leather gloves. They're the bomb, even if they do look like OJ gloves.

I'm guessing you're an engineer. Most engineers think anything more formal than blue jeans and a polo is "dressing up."

I have a slick cashmere blend coat from Banana Republic. I need to get a good casual fleece that is warm as hell because apparently we're in the middle of the arctic.

The mitten/fingerless glove thingies are GREAT. Especially when needing to use a touchscreen phone or digging for metro cards, keys, etc.

I am also trying to talk my husband into wearing a scarf here on super windy days to protect his face and ears (as he won't wear a beanie when going into work). He hates it, but I don't care when it's below freezing

I mostly wear a Mountain Hardware monkey man fleece jacket or Eddie Bauer First Ascent down sweater. I really love these two jackets. If it's windy I'll put on my Arc'teryx Beta over the MH monkey man. The monkey fleece is twice as warm as polartec 200 or polartec windpro (the materials most people's fleeces are made of) but the warmth all goes to hell when the wind blows.
I'd like to have the First Ascent Mountain Guide down jacket for these really cold days we've been having.

If want to look halfway decent I have a waist length fairly plain looking wool Woolrich jacket and a peacoat-ish wool jacket from Old Navy. The Old Navy jacket has held up surprisingly well (had it for 6-7 years now)

there was a time when engineers were expected to wear a coat and tie to work. thank god those days are over. disclaimer i'm actually required to khaki pants except on friday, but the polo shirt part still holds true.

So where should I go for a good scarf (that's not going to cost me $50+ dollar bucks like the one posted in the link above)? Would be primarily wearing it with a black wool topcoat or, occasionally, a tan raincoat/trenchcoat. I used to have a nice one with a subtle white/black/gray plaid but I lost it.

no, I gave him crap for wearing a scarf as a fashion accessory, not as a functional thing. I told him I see no problem in using it as it is meant, but as a fashion accessory, I will make fun of it because it is extremely ~ in my opinion. And I wear my grommitts as a functional thing. Try fully reading my posts before trying to troll me next time. Even he acknowledged the validity of my poking fun.

The real reason I came in here: I just bought a Peacoat and a Military style coat (both wool) on super discount- They cost 65 bucks for the both of them (plus whatever the tax came out to be... I ordered some other stuff too and got free shipping). these will be my first "nicer" coats, so I can stop wearing my marmot and north face every where I go

Got one of those Columbia "Triclimate" jackets with the soft shell inner layer and the standard outer layer that I wear when it gets really cold.

Also have a charcoal colored peacoat, a black leather jacket, a brown leather jacket, and a black velvet type blazer.

Any one of them will do the trick depending on the whether on how sexy I want to look.

that is pretty true

I mean, they aren't awful, but you are paying for the name. I think marmot, patagonia, and mountain hardware (that one is getting closer to NF territory though) are better buys for your buck in terms of active outdoor wear
