This one was really fun. I used an octagonal prism to connect the torso so that it pivots and can be rotated.

Question:
What's the difference between an oil-based paint pen and a water-based one. I had no idea they made different kinds until I was in the store yesterday.
They would be used on canvas/photos if that makes a difference on which ones I should buy. 1/18/2011 11:00:24 AM |
GREEN JAY All American 14180 Posts user info edit post |
water-based is going to be more like a marker and dry faster, but I'm not certain it will work as well on canvas. Oil based ones stink and are more likely to have flow issues, so plan to get your project done in one or two sessions in a well-ventilated area or you may need to get multiples. 1/18/2011 11:22:23 AM |

Mechwarrior 3 Cougar
Double jointed arms and pivoting torso. This was fun, but I like the Timberwolf more. I think I'm going to make a Mauler next... The Cougar is a 1-40 scale and the Timberwolf is a 1-50, so they are a bit off in relation to each other...

was gonna post in the "tww art show" thread, but it's dead. this will do though
the colors in this one are a little off due to my camera -- or at least they appear to me on my screen. the center portion of yellow on the right side is much more yellow than the yellow-ish/green/browns near it
i'll get around to finishing this sooner or later:
just started this:

hmm, maybe we'll go with the water-based ones and I'll do a test run then. We're basically using a big canvas for our wedding guestbook rather than a traditional book.1/23/2011 11:08:44 AM |

You may want to consider oil in that case. Oil paints hold up better over time (they should fade less). If you live in Raleigh, go to Jerry's Artarama on Wake Forest Rd. They usually have demo packs of most stuff. You can try one or two of each and see if you like how it works/looks. Then just get the type you prefer.1/23/2011 2:55:12 PM |

Thanks I never played Battletech, no. I never met anyone interested in playing, but I am somewhat familiar with it...
Argus, Bushwacker, Fafnir, Daishi (Dire Wolf), Uziel, Puma (Adder), Osiris, Uller (Kit Fox), Hellbringer (Loki), and Owens are some of my favorite mechs... I like the light mechs in MechWarrior a lot... The Blood Asp is a bad ass looking Mech... Currently working on a Shadowcat.

it was 1:30 am and i couldn't get to sleep because the apartment above us was slowly leaking water through my bedroom ceiling by the door, and this drip was getting louder and louder
so i decided to reroute the water into the living room, but how was i going to do it?
and then i noticed i had ducktape and we had a bunch of drinking straws in the kitchen, so i rigged up an aquaduct(tape) for the water to drip onto and travel down and out of my bedroom and into the living room where it could drip relatively silently

i didn't make it but it was made for me. a coworker/friend does wood working as a hobby and i have a pretty dangerous knife drawer at home. we both use cutco knives so i traded him 3 table knives and a pearing knife for the block
he stained it to match my cabinets & i can't wait to get it home and put all my knives inside! 1/26/2011 7:55:23 PM |

ive got something like this (.xlsx file) planned for whenever i finally get a house, because right now it'd be too big/heavy/maybe fragile to try and transport
ive considered making a version that would end up smaller, but that would take a lot of work (in addition to making the thing anyway lol) 1/27/2011 10:06:47 AM |

This was part of my Halloween costume last year... I built a full size new series TARDIS (or most of it). I still need to build another side and a better roof so I can take it out for some photo shoots at iconic Raleigh locations in the next few months (and hopefully some near campus).
If anyone has a moment I'd kindly ask you to vote for me in the BBC America contest by clicking the like button on my entry page! http://www.wheresthetardis.com/entry/71

So my coworker and I go to the shooting range and we started a bet. When we are both ready, we setup a target at 25 yards and load up 5 rounds each. The person who's 5 shots are closest to the center of the silhouette wins and the loser pays for the range time that day.
Well, to raise the stakes a little, I made this for the loser to display at work:

Something to raise the food/water bowls for my dogs. Now they don't have to hunch over to eat/drink. Not bad considering all I had was an 8" handsaw, wood glue, a couple screws, and some sandpaper... A table/miter/circular saw woulda made this project soooo much easier...
