They aimed too low
Even though they might have been met with "hell no"'s, they owed it to their fanbase to at least explore the thought of getting Meyer, Carroll, or Saban

There is no way either 3 of those would leave their current situations for ND. EVER. Unless ND was offering some insane money. Whether some people want to believe it or not, ND is not the top coaching job anymore. If it was, then ND wouldn't be considering the head coaches of Cincy and UConn. They could pick and choose who they wanted. No big names want to coach there because everyone outside of ND realizes its not the program they used to be, and haven't been for a long time. I think they set the bar low and went after Kelly because he is a great coach from a smaller team and they knew he would take it and wouldn't be shot down by all the big names....again. And they could say we "got the guy we wanted" I actually like Kelly and think he will have great success at ND, but like I said, if ND is what ND and its fans still think it is, you don't go after the head coaches from Cincy and UConn.
There are 3 maybe 4 coaches in college that will not voluntarily leave where they are for another job in college. Tressel, Meyer, Carroll and maybe Stoops/Brown. They are not going anywhere unless they take a job in the NFL or get fired.

Tim Tebow is leaving, Florida has to reload a bit and the SEC is getting nastier, and it's going to be more work, more headaches, and more of a fight now than it has been in past seasons. No, the Gators aren't going away, but this was a run, a great run, and it's going to take a major effort to stay at such a lofty perch with Alabama rocking and rolling, with Tennessee improving, with Georgia reloading, and with LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, and the rest of the league, outside of Vanderbilt, getting better and stronger. In other words, Meyer might have wanted to be wooed, wined, and dined and be shown that the grass might be greener in Indiana.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with the hire. This might be the right coach and the right fit and the right time. But if Florida keeps on playing at a national title level year after year, and if Kelly doesn't get Notre Dame to the BCS on a yearly basis, and that's where the expectations are set at now, there will be a segment of the Irish fan base that will always wonder what might have been. 12/10/2009 5:46:59 PM |

kelley is just another charlie weiss except he played in the big east. Ya he went unbeaten but the common opponent games were lost by nd at the very last play and won by cincy on the very last play. cincy still had no d and kelly won't do great with the typical toughass nd schedule.
if you think we're going to beat cincy you're joking. calleras is not much worse than pike and they might even improve on defense thus as a team. (doesn't mean the outcome will improve)

Kelly isn't going to coach in the Sugar Bowl. Cincy will not have its best coach ever coaching them in the biggest game in that schools history. Also, Kelly will not be coaching in the biggest game of his coaching career. I do not like this...
On a semi related note. His last two coaching jobs he has only spent 3 years at. To me, he has basically been living off of the previous coaches players/recruits. And once again he is inheriting a great class. Will be interesting to see how he will do once he gets more than 3yrs under his belt recruit wise.

Well, his best player (Gilyard) was a CB when Kelly was hired and Tony Pike was never going to be a starter... he is a great offensive coach, no doubt about it.
You don't turn Cincy in to a national power without knowing how to coach. It's not like he inherited a bunch of 4 and 5 star guys...
^ they downgraded their schedule about 2 or 3 years ago to try and set up Weis with a BCS bowl in Clausen's JR and SR year. It was by design. Before that they always had a very difficult overall schedule. Michigan, SC, MSU, Purdue and BC every year. Difficult home and homes with the likes of Tennessee, Ohio State, Nebraska, etc, etc...

I'm not saying we're going to win, but I think we definitely have a chance...Gilyard and Pike are gone as well as 14 other seniors. Plus Kelly is a great coach, and I highly doubt they hire someone as good as or better than him as his replacement. Also, I'll take Wilson over Calleros any day of the week, and Spencer is just as good as their other stud WR.

While I'd love to be a consistently winning program, I expect TOB to elevate the program and continue to get better throughout the years, with an occasional drop off every now and then. If we get where we are constantly bringing in great recruiting classes and aren't improving record wise, then I won't be content with just going 7-5/8-4 every year. 12/14/2009 9:48:17 PM |

Also, how the hell has San Jose State not found ANYBODY to be their HC. I know it's not exactly a plum coaching assignment, but even getting them into a bowl game would be seen as a fantastic on someone's resume.
I wonder what the holdup is; if they're dragging their feet, getting rejected left and right, setting their sights too high, or just getting tied up in some NC State shit

Quote : | " [quote]"We pound on Kansas State, so A&M looks at the film all week. The (Aggies) strut around and laugh - you know, ho-ho-ho, ha-ha-ha, and they listen to their fat little girlfriends, and pretty soon, what happens in Manhattan happens.
Well, the first thing we do is we go in our meeting and we talk about we're going to respect everyone; we're going to fear no one. We're not going to compare scores and we're not going to listen to our fat little girlfriends.
[The coaches failed to make] our points more compelling than their fat little girlfriends. Now their fat little girlfriends have some obvious advantages. For one thing, their fat little girlfriends are telling them what they want to hear, which is 'how great you are' and 'how easy its going to be' and we had a bunch of people who wanted to win the football game but nobody wanted to play the football game.
That defies every level of work ethic that exists with regard to football. As coaches, we have to solve our failure on reaching them and the players have to listen. I am willing to go to fairly amazing lengths to make that happen. I don't know if I will be successful this week or not but I am going to try and there will be some people inconvenienced and if it happens to be their fat little girlfriends too bad."
