Quote :
"People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

^^And, they have pretty much been breaking every single story related to his death and the Drs who may or may have not caused it.

And yes, I am aware that TMZ buys info, but they only pay for credible info.

I think TMZ is even more credible because they pay for scoops.

Someone isn't going to come feed them some bullshit, because if thats what it turns out to be, they aren't going to be paid next time they have some inside scoop.

People who are just spitting out stories for the hell of it have nothing to lose.

There is reason TMZ breaks celeb news and the like way before any other news outlet gets it.

I could be totally wrong, but at this point, we don't know if Conan will get paid or not if he were to walk."

Tapdancing Christ, are you always this stupid? (Hint: that question was rhetorical as I've read many of your other posts and already clearly know the answer is yes.)

It's not just one source vs another. It's one source vs practically everyone else that's reported on the matter. It has been reported since the very beginning that while Conan does have a contract to do "The Tonight Show" it's not in his contract as to which time slot that show will be in. So you saying "that NBC is violating the contract that they signed with Conan by moving his time slot." is just wrong. 100% wrong and confirmed by everyone including Conan in the statement he released.

Just because the majority is saying one thing, doesn't mean its correct.

Once again, TMZ has a proven track record for being right in stuff like this.

And I don't see any contract talk in that statement by Conan.

Either way, he could still get paid if he chooses to leave possibly.

Until the actual contract is posted for everyone to view, there is no way to tell who is right and who is wrong.

TMZ just isn't going to come out and list those 3 options without something to back it up.

Its not like they just guessed what the contract said and made up some story to go along with what they think the contract said.

Once again, they have people all over fucking LA that get info like this to them on an accurate and consistent basis.

Do you honestly think that if Conan had a contract to do "The Tonight Show" at 11:35 that he would just roll over and let NBC fuck him like this?

Actually, nevermind, don't answer that. Your opinion on this (or anything at all, really) is no longer of any importance to me whatsoever.

He has options.

I never claimed that TMZ released every single thing relating to a celebrity first.

However, they have been more up to date with this entire situation than the NY Times is.

Also, why are you laughing at them for paying for credible info?

It entices people to come out of the woodwork with juicy stories or information that they other wise wouldn't come forward with.

You are an idiot if you don't understand how that works. Thats the reason they get the majority of this stuff before anyone else does.

Right, and they are doing it BECAUSE they are getting paid, not BECAUSE it's true...there are a bunch of examples of stories that TMZ posts that turn out to be false. Also you seem to think that people always do things that are in their interest long-term ( like only selling correct information to TMZ), when in reality people constantly do things to benefit themselves in the short term that will have a negative impact on them in the long run (another example besides selling fake info to TMZ would be credit cards).

Quote :
"That could prove to be a difficult extraction, at least as some senior NBC executives see it. Despite the fact that Mr. O’Brien is being ejected from the 11:35 p.m. time period he was given in June and pushed to after midnight to make room for Jay Leno, NBC executives are expressing confidence that the network has not breached Mr. O’Brien’s contract.

The reason? The contract, NBC is arguing, guaranteed Mr. O’Brien would be installed as host of “The Tonight Show” — and unlike many other deals for late-night stars, Mr. O’Brien’s contract contains no specific language about the time period the show would occupy, NBC executives said. NBC has said Mr. O’Brien’s relocated show would be called “The Tonight Show.”

The contractual terms could affect Fox’s pursuit of Mr. O’Brien in several ways. Mr. Reilly acknowledged that even if Mr. O’Brien found a home at Fox, NBC could insist that it had the right to keep Mr. O’Brien from starting a show for an extended period of time — as long as a year or more.

Mr. O’Brien’s side has a different interpretation of whether NBC’s actions constitute a breach; but both sides predicted that the issue would not end up in a legal battle. “Nobody has the stomach for that,” said a senior NBC executive, who asked not to be identified because of the unsettled contractual situation."

See, they didn't include a time becuase the tonight show has ALWAYS been at 11:35 following local news. It could be argued in court that the 11:35 was implied and thats what they agreed. There is no certainty in any of that statement by either side. Neither side seems to be 100% confident in that contract.

^The NY Times has also posted false information and stories just like every single news outlet in the history of man.

I never said TMZ always posts 100% accurate information.

They pay for information that has facts/credible info to back it up.

Yes, sometimes some of it turns out to be incorrect.

This, like I said, entices people to come out with stories and or info that they would otherwise just sit on.

You can't just roll up into TMZ and be like "Yo, yeah I saw Tom Cruise on a beach in Miami making out with Oprah" and expect to get paid for it.

You can't sit here and tell me I am 100% wrong when even in that NY Times article they mention both sides arguing over the wording of the contract and both sides appear to think they are in the right.

Perhaps this may have been discussed in some article and I overlooked it, but why cant this happen..

The Tonight show is still at 11:35 like its always been.

Leno's show at 10 gets scrapped and moved to 12:35 after Conan.

Of the 2, I would have to think that Leno's contract is cheaper than Conan's.

This entire mess is the result of Leno being a little bitch and backing out on what he had agreed to.

Just get rid of him and let him deal with it.

^^Umm, no. 6 years ago when Leno said was going to retire in 2009 they had Conan sign a contract saying he would be the host of The Tonight Show when Leno left.

Well a year or so before Leno was supposed to retire, he decided that he really didn't want to anymore, but NBC already had a contract with Conan saying he would host The Tonight Show, so Leno couldn't come back as host of that.

This entire mess is because Leno decided not to retire afterall.

I mean I see what you are saying. Its both ways I guess. But none of this happens if Leno had just agreed to what he told them he was going to do.

^How can you say that America loves Leno more than Conan when they have never gone head to head in the ratings. Leno has better ratings than Conan when Leno was hosting the Tonight Show, and Conan has had better ratings than Leno currently has on his new show while Conan is hosting The Tonight Show.

Ive never actually heard anyone say that they like Leno. I hear people all the time say they like Conan.

It's like your stupidity increases exponentially with every post you make.

They could hire someone besides Leno to host the Tonight show if Conan quits?

OK, since you obviously don't understand what's going on here, I'll spell it out for you.

NBC WANTS LENO BACK AT 11:35 HOSTING THE TONIGHT SHOW.

If you can't see that, then you really should just off yourself now. They don't WANT to put Leno in a half hour show, They don't WANT Conan on the Tonight show, they want to go back to the way things were 10 months ago where Leno was beating Letterman in the ratings night in and night out. And this whole moving Conan to 12:05 thing is just a bluff to get him to quit. They even said if he decided to walk to another network they would gladly allow him to leave. If they wanted to keep him, do you think they would allow him to talk to Fox or ABC? No, they found a loophole that allowed him to choose between ruining the institution of "The Tonight Show" as we know it, or walk away from his contract, and they just hope he does "the right thing" and leaves. Now the only question is how ugly does he want to make it?

And I really don't see how you could think I'm the one that's trolling. Aside from defending TMZ against practically every other source on the internet, and spewing some of the most retarded shit I've seen on this website lately, you've added nothing to this discussion, yet still seem to be claiming a "victory"? It's not possible to be dumber than someone who suggests that NBC might bring a third party in to host The Tonight Show. Did you have anyone in mind? Maybe this is finally Letterman's shot!

^^Thats not what we are here arguing.

That actually makes a lot of sense which is why I asked the question.

The argument is that you said I was 100% wrong, and that TMZ is 100% wrong in the 3 options that I posted.

You also said that Conan said that the time slot was not part of the contract, which he didnt.

It is stated in the NY Times article, that the time slot was not included in in the contract, but is for every other late night show.

Both sides seem to be in disagreement over the contract when you seem to think that its 100% in favor of NBC.

And if you knew anything about the situation, you would know that this isnt because Conans ratings are bad, they are quiet good actually, its because of Leno's epic failure at the 10pm slot that is costing them valuable prime time real estate.

wow.

nbc doesn't really seem to be thinking long term here. jay is eventually going to retire, and someone is going to have to host the tonight show after him. it only makes sense that conan, who's already been groomed for the transition, be the person. eventually, jay leno's fanbase is going to die off, because our generation doesn't really care for him. i thought he was funny until i was about 12. then i would stay up and wait for conan. i honestly can't remember the last time i watched an entire episode of leno (but i'm sure it would consist of tired jokes about bill clinton and oj simpson).

i don't really understand why they are so worried about conan's ratings, as he just took over. surely it would take time for the ratings to adjust to a new host. and conan really brought the late show a large audience, so there's no reason to think he couldn't do it again at 11:30.

That's part of the problem, you don't even know what you're arguing anymore.

Quote :
"The argument is that you said I was 100% wrong, and that TMZ is 100% wrong in the 3 options that I posted."

Putting words into my mouth are we? I never said the TMZ article was 100% anything. If you go back and look I even said that it's all about who you believe. I was quick to point out that the TMZ article was contrary to both common sense, and practically every other source on the internet. I did say you were 100% wrong about Conan's contract stating that he had to be on a show at 11:35. And as you've yet to provide a source (TMZ or otherwise) that says any different, I will stand by that assessment.

Quote :
"You also said that Conan said that the time slot was not part of the contract, which he didnt."

Again, going by common sense, which I'm really sorry you completely lack, if Conan had it in his contract to do a show at 11:35, there wouldn't be any talk of a potential move. At that point he wouldn't have to tell people, "No, I'm not going to do my show at 12:05", he could just tell everyone that he's doing the show at 11:35 or he's taking his money. But since that's not what's going on, there must be something to this whole no specified time-slot thing that EVERYBODY is reporting. (Well everybody except TMZ, of course).

Quote :
"And if you knew anything about the situation, you would know that this isnt because Conans ratings are bad, they are quiet good actually, its because of Leno's epic failure at the 10pm slot that is costing them valuable prime time real estate.
"

His ratings are quiet good, eh? They're still not nearly as good as Leno's were at that slot, and that's what you're failing to see. This entire fiasco is being done because NBC wants to hit the reset button on this whole mess. I'm sure they'd love to put Conan back to his old show as well, but that ship has long sailed. At this point their only option is to shame him into quitting his contract so they don't have to break it themselves.
