Skinner out at BC according to the radio 3/30/2010 8:44:51 AM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
^ If true that is good for the rest of the ACC IMO. Skinner has always seemed like a coach that got the most out of his players/teams. It could turn out to be another TOB situation though where another coach comes in and has some success with the prior coaches players. It will be interesting to see who BC gets to replace him. 3/30/2010 8:52:58 AM |

I'm seeing a lot of "St. John's set to hire Steve Lavin"
So they actually got a coach finally.
And an actual college coach, they didn't have to get bailed out by an almost-alumnus.
(no matter what happens with the BBall program, never forget that Lowe seriously bailed us out when Fowler had botched the search, Lowe could have easily stayed in the NBA). 3/30/2010 8:53:21 AM |

With Lavin, I think he (1) wasn't ready to come back and (2) definitely thought there was a better situation he could have come in to. I doubt he thinks St. John's is a better job than NC State.
4 years down the road he's realizing that he's not even close to a hot commodity anymore and that this might be the best chance he has for coaching a somewhat big time program again. 3/30/2010 10:25:15 AM |

Lavin is from the west coast (San Francisco) and he's married to an actress. I'm sure the glitz and glamour of NYC would be an attraction for him, though I have my doubts on just how glitzy and glamoury the St. Johns job might be. Still though, I think he'd fit in a lot better there than he would have at NC State. 3/30/2010 10:26:46 AM |

I have to ask what coach exactly does BC think they are going to get?
St. John's is a program with a proud tradition who has come on hard times and isn't nearly as attractive as they think.
Boston College is a program with a tradition of point shaving and losing big games and is every bit as unattractive as everyone thinks.
^^ It's a lot of pandering to scummy AAU handlers.

^ Are you trolling? The guy was able to recruit...to U C L A.
Plus I'm not sure how serious or mutual the interest was in Lavin and NC State. I remember him floating and self promoting his own name for the job, Wolfpackers flipping out that we would consider the guy (considering he has a terrible reputation for work ethic and Xs and Os), and then backing off from both sides.
Beilein turned us down, supposedly because we reached a verbal agreement on how to handle the buyout then changed the terms of the offer to force him to take the tax hit up front. 3/30/2010 4:08:37 PM |

There was no interest from our end. We were never serious about him being coach here. His name may have been floated around at some point, but it never got anywhere close to the point where he could have been coach.
He essentially took himself out of the running even though we never invited him INTO the running.

Where is this coming from. What I saw was that they agreed to this over a week ago and he asked BC to keep quiet until after he'd interviewed with St. John's.
Was he interviewing with other schools prior to that?

My recollection is that he publicly named himself as a candidate for the job even though we never approached him. Having ESPN as your mouthpiece has its benefits.
^ It's Gene DeFilippo, who has the biggest inferiority complex and personality conflicts with coaches of any AD in college sports. He fired Jagz for talking to Tampa Bay, so whether or not that is what happened this time noone believes him.

Reading that Lavin is going to have Leitao on his staff. Despite what you guys think about him guy was an awesome asst. coach and a great recruiter in the area. Good move, if true.
He is going to turn them around. Not sure what their ceiling is but they'll, at the very least, be respectable again.

I'm sure all 4 BC fans are pleased, but they shouldn't be. The whole "he's lazy and doesn't do any work" thing is a valid criticism, but coming from DeFillipo it comes off as yet another in the long line of unnecessary bitchfests about former BC coaches. This motherfucker has got to be the MOST difficult AD to work for in the country, and BC isn't an attractive job anyway so they'll be luck to get a halfway competent replacement. Also, it sounds like they are only going to hire a coach that runs some sort of uptempo offense because the flex is apparently too boring for their 4 fans. God they are a bunch of entitled, faggot ass whiners.3/31/2010 3:48:28 PM |

If they try to run an uptempo offense they are going to get ran out of the gym come ACC time. With their shitty facilities they aren't going to attract the type of athletes needed to run that time of system. That's why Skinner's flex offense worked fairly well (I mean they beat UNC in Chapel Hill when they won the NC, hell when was the last time we won in Chapel Hill). BC's players weren't the most athletic, but they were very skilled and played smart. Skinner was known for finding diamonds in the rough. 3/31/2010 6:51:35 PM |

Difference being that NC State has more than 4 fans, has a rich tradition surpassed by only a select few programs, has facilities that are on par and in some cases better than the blue bloods of college basketball, and is one of the most profitable programs in the NCAA (4th in 2005 http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2337810). You can't compare NC State and BC's programs. They are in totally different realms.
