No, it's not bitching about out-of-shape people being in the gym. Everybody knows that you have to start somewhere. If they're serious about making changes to their lives, then I think everyone is absolutely all for that.

The reason that those of us who work out regularly have disdain for "resolutioners" is because it's just another example of the "fail" exhibited 50 other weeks of the year--after 10, 15, 20 years of watching the 2-3 week influx in January, we have a pretty good idea of how this deal works, at least the overwhelming majority of the time. They aren't sincerely looking to make themselves better--they're coming in there to fuck around for a couple of weeks in a half-hearted effort to honor their "resolution". In reality, they aren't accomplishing anything but getting in the way and even more firmly entrenching their pattern of failure and quitting.

A similar attitude exists towards the pre-spring break crowd (in college).

I think theDuke is wrong about the "resolutioners." I'm not sure anybody is qualified to determine whether or not someone is half-hearted in their efforts or not.

But the pre-Spring break crowd...that shit is hilarious. I never knew people really did that. That is really, really lame. I'd rather be fifty pounds overweight/sane than twenty pounds overweight/delusional enough to think that a week in the gym is going to make me look good in a bikini.

PF on buck jones is already slowing down, thankfully...the first two weeks after new year's were packed with a bunch of people i'd never seen before

last week it was still busy, but i didn't have to wait to find a machine i wanted...which is good, the half-assers are finally giving up

I don't mind the influx of people to the gym

I mind the influx of people who do a set, then rest for 5 minutes before doing another set

I mind the influx of people who spend 90 minutes walking 3 miles an hour on the treadmills instead of 45 minutes running 6 mph

I mind the influx of people who don't follow basic etiquitte like wiping down the machines after you use them

I mind the influx of people who come in with thier wives or buddies and spend most of their time talking about Conan and Jersey Shore when I'm trying to listen to 50 and I can hear them thru my headphones

I mind the influx of people who come in and put a rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond on full blast and laugh hysterically along with it when the rest of us are trying to concentrate

But in general, no, I don't mind the influx of people to the gym

I don't really mind them either, because all the regulars know they won't last a month. Soon it will be just us regulars again, with maybe 1 or 2 new additions that actually have willpower.

Yeah Id imagine out of the huge influx there will be at least a few who really do keep it up and stay going regularly.

^ yeah, but for the most part, if they were really in it to win it, there's a good chance they would be starting at any of the other perfectly good times of the year to hit the gym. The New Year's resolution thing just screams "not resolute about my resolution."

Well sure, I mean, none of us can read minds and determine on a case-by-case basis who is serious. We're just talking about "resolutioners" collectively.

Thank god this "new years resolution" nonsense idea doesn't exist in non-western countries.

Thank god.

These people subsidize your memberships.

Y'all should work on your willpower to not complain about them. You can do it. Stick with it, guys!
