Just FYI: It now appears that OIT is backing away from its commitment to provide graduating students with e-mail addresses "for life" (sixth paragraph):
Quote : | "As an added benefit, students will be able to access these tools using their existing e-mail addresses, which will still carry the tag @ncsu.edu. And now, instead of losing their NC State e- mail addresses when they graduate, students will keep them for life." |
http://tinyurl.com/2d35q69
While OIT claims they want to honor this apparent commitment, the current policy stands:
Quote : | "Computing Services will extend recent graduates' access to their e-mail and Unity/Eos file space for four months after graduation." |

^doesn't sound like they're backing away... they didn't come out with a news release or a change in policy..... the policy for email accounts just hasn't been changed... and maybe they consider the gmail account different than a unity account? idk

^ Um. . .no. Maybe you're just not reading the quotations correctly--and I'm not trying to be nasty.
In any event, I have spoken with several people at OIT concerning this situation and my facts are correct. The article that is still posted on the NCSU Web site clearly states that "instead of losing their NC State e-mail addresses when they graduate, students will keep them for life." But this is not the case--the current four-month policy is in effect and will not be changed by any date certain.
And, yes, this information is concerning Gmail. SquirrelMail/Webmail and GroupWise/WolfWise are going away eventually anyway.
Just trust me on this one, okay? I've been through months of wrangling on this issue.

Yeah, that policy page is definitely outdated. I've always heard that students will maintain their G-mail accounts for life.
That said, chances are that gmail.ncsu.edu will no longer work since according to the university you don't have an account. You'd probably have to log in as whatever@ncsu.edu through the normal Gmail interface. 7/13/2010 10:17:55 PM |

That policy is old and outdated. I left NCSU and still have my gmail school account. All it really serves a purpose for anymore is facebook spam:
All my personal email was already being funneled to my @gmail.com account before they decided to switch. So despite the @ncsu.edu address, the account really doesn't do a whole lot for me.

Are you guys just trolling or what? Nothing you posted contradicts what I posted.
Yeah, I still have my Gmail account, too--what's your point? According to OIT, I will not continue to have it indefinitely--they claim that they want to let graduating students keep their e-mail accounts "for life," but that currently is not the case. The existing four-month policy stands--and if any of you would like to post a link to an "updated" policy, be my guest. NB: You can't because the one I posted is the current policy.
But as I indicated, don't believe me--I challenge you to simply call the Help Desk. You will see that I am correct.
The following is a direct quotation sent to me in June from a director at OIT:
Quote : | "Yes, the announcement about the student transition to Google Apps indicated that one of the results of the moving would be the ability to provide lifetime accounts for graduates. That is a new service that we very much want to be able to offer, however, we may not be able to initially until the identity and access management infrastructure is in place that allows for that. At this point, until we know we can, we are still having to stay with the current policy (which can be found at: http://www.ncsu.edu/it/rulesregs/caccounts/student-maint-sop.html#activation)." |
I told you to trust me on this one, but some of you just couldn't bring yourself to do it, could you? You had to turn it into an e-peen battle--and all I was trying to do was help by passing along a bit of factual and official information.

I graduated longer than 4 months ago and my account is still active. It might have something to do with me being an early adopter and also an early tester from a year/so ago. No idea, but I'm not trolling when I tell you that my account still works.
To quote your quote:
Quote : | "may not be able to initially" |
So perhaps they've also skirted some tech issues they thought they had. I don't know.

^ NP. I was referring more to another user. And OIT is probably just behind on things.
And I would think that since OIT claims that they want to offer the lifetime service that they're not in a hurry to delete e-mail accounts. FTR, I get what you're saying, but everything I posted was straight from OIT.
Anyway, I'm glad you still have your NCSU account if you want it. I wish OIT would just go ahead and honor the commitment that was published. 7/14/2010 3:54:01 AM |

i'm assuming my friend is just an idiot but did OIT send any kind of notices that their email would change over to google in the last couple weeks? i don't know when everybody was transferred over but he said he still logged into the old webmail two weeks ago, and then asked me why it wasn't working tonight...
i'd be willing to bet there was an email with info in it but it was ignored but i'm just curious.
and why does the old webmail page still work? it does have a banner ad on the login page but it still has a field to let you attempt to log in... 8/3/2010 10:02:20 PM |

The old page still works because faculty and staff still use it. It's only students' email that was moved to google, us old folk still use cyrus/"unity mail" or groupwise (or in some cases both).
And, while they did send out e-mails about the upcoming change I do think they were in many cases ignored, and the Help Desk is going to be pretty slammed if they're not already.

Dear NC State Graduate,
The Office of Information Technology migrated more than 44,000 accounts to Google Apps @ NC State.
University procedures had been to disable access to your university-provided e-mail account four months after graduation. However, with the campus decision to move student e-mail to Google Apps Education Edition, we are working to implement a process that will allow you to retain access to your "UnityID@ncsu.edu" e-mail account as an alumnus. You will be able to use your account as long as NC State provides an e-mail service to campus. The only difference between your Google Apps @ NC State account and those of current students is that eventually it will include ads off to the side, similar to how personal Gmail accounts work.
QUESTIONS AND HELP
Full information about the Google Apps @ NC State service can be found on our website at http://google.ncsu.edu.

It appears that NCSU google apps users are now getting the full suite of google products:
Quote : | "Dear Google Apps @ NC State user,
Google Consumer Apps are coming to NC State, beginning Monday, November 12, 2012! In order to continue using ANY of our existing Google Apps service offerings (including Gmail, Calendar, etc.), you MUST agree to the Terms of Service when presented. Please read on for more information.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Once these apps are enabled in our domain on Monday, November 12, 2012, ALL USERS will be required to accept a Terms of Service agreement regardless of whether or not they will be using a Consumer App.
- When you log in to your account the first time after the consumer apps are enabled, you will see a Terms of Service agreement. - You MUST accept the Terms of Service. - You will NOT be able to access any Google services (Gmail, Calendar or the new Consumer Apps) until you accept these new terms. - While you must accept the new Terms of Service, the additional terms only apply if and when you use a Consumer App. - IMPORTANT: Google requires that a user be at least 13 years old in order to use the Google+ app. Carefully enter your birthdate when requested, because if you enter a date that indicates you are under 13, your ENTIRE Google account will be locked out.
WHAT ARE CONSUMER APPS?
Google offers an array of apps defined as either "consumer" or "core." Core Apps have already been approved and are in use here at NC State: Gmail, Docs/Drive, Calendar, Groups, Sites, and Talk. Consumer Apps are additional apps and include offerings like YouTube, Maps, Google+, Reader, Picasa and many more. OIT has been working with NC State's Office of General Counsel to be able to "turn on" selected Consumer Apps for campus and we are now ready to do so. Enabling Consumer Apps allows users to access / use these apps using their ncsu.edu credentials.
TERMS OF SERVICE
Use of the Core Apps is covered by a single "Terms of Service" (TOS) agreement that NC State has already signed on behalf of our campus; however, Consumer Apps are covered by multiple different agreements. The Office of General Counsel (OGC) and OIT have evaluated the terms for each Consumer App and assessed the associated risks and benefits of use, and have approved the release of several of these apps for campus use.
On November 12, 2012, the Google Service Team (GST) will turn on the following apps for campus:
- Google Takeout - Google Moderator - Google News - Google Maps - Google Groups - Google Reader - Google Alerts - Google Blogger - Google+ - Picasa Web Albums - YouTube
More Consumer Apps may be approved for roll-out in the future; be sure to check http://google.ncsu.edu for more information.
HOW CAN I LEARN MORE?
OIT will hold a Lunch & Learn seminar via Google+ Hangout on Air on November 14 from noon until 1 p.m. Please join us from the convenience of your own office and computer to get a feel for how you can use Google Consumer Apps in your job or classroom. This event will be recorded for those who cannot attend live. For more information, go to http://go.ncsu.edu/google-seminar.
For information such as examples of use cases, accessibility information and more, please refer to the http://google.ncsu.edu website.
Regards,
Google Service Team
