Quote : | "As expected, San Diego restricted free agents Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill didn't sign their tenders by the June 15 deadline. Now, Chargers general manager A.J. Smith says the team is preparing for the 2010 season without them.
"We lost a couple of great players [Tuesday], and it hurts," Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "We are trying to build a championship team, and losing the services of both Vincent and Marcus just made that more difficult -- but not impossible. In due time, Coach [Norv] Turner will name two new starters. We will rally as a team, compete and try to win as many games as we can."
The two players do not plan to report for the start of training camp and quite possibly well beyond, league sources have told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Union-Tribune is reporting that the two players plan to hold out until after Week 10 of the 2010 season unless they receive long-term deals or are traded.
Jackson and McNeill need to play six weeks to get credit for an accrued season.
As a result of not signing their tenders, the Chargers have cut McNeill's salary from $3.168 million to $583,000 and Jackson's salary from $3.268 million to $600,000.
The 26-year-old McNeill is a two-time Pro Bowl left tackle, in charge of protecting quarterback Philip Rivers' blindside.
The 27-year-old Jackson has had two straight seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards and has led the league in each of those years in average yards per catch.
The Chargers have prepared for Jackson's and McNeill's absences, signing wide receiver Josh Reed and offensive tackle Tra Thomas this month.
"It was a very unpleasant situation we all had to deal with," Smith told the Union-Tribune. "It came to a conclusion [Tuesday]. We will now move forward and focus on the upcoming season." " |
Guess all that division winning, super bowl champs chest-thumping was premature. Bye bye left tackle and number one wide receiver. Hello mediocre football.

The Chargers management sucks ass. Seriously, pay these dudes and try to win. Oh well, Rivers career will never amount to a championship unless he's traded. Plus Norv Turner will never get fired. 6/16/2010 5:23:28 PM |

A.J. has another thing coming if he thinks Josh Reed and old ass Tra Thomas are going to come in and this team is still going to be competing for a championship.
Also, its pretty hilarious that these dumbasses could have signed their tenders for 6 times the money but decided to play it tough, got their bluffed called, made themselves pretty much untradable, and now have basically no leverage. 6/17/2010 9:52:56 AM |

no business-savvy GM is giving out lucrative, long-term deals right now so long as there's uncertainty with the CBA
and no, aj smith doesn't expect thomas and reed to play at the level of vjack and mcneill. still gotta have bodies to plug in for competition and depth though
chargers' mgmt aren't idiots---they're running the team like a business, which it is 6/17/2010 1:41:13 PM |

People at chargers forums think it's fairly likely they will both come back for the last 6 weeks of the season so they can get an Accrued Season (or they will still be RFA if I understand correctly) 6/17/2010 6:15:21 PM |

Ugh. I just wish one of the sides would cave in. I know San Diego has a good receiving corps without him, but he's still a unique receiver with his strength, height, and speed. He just adds a threat that not many WRs out there have.
Not looking like he'll be a Charger this year at this moment. 6/30/2010 1:15:54 PM |

Maybe SD mngt should tell Jackson to get the players union to agree to a new CBA and I bet they would be willing to re-sign him to a long term deal 6/30/2010 1:29:18 PM |

hell, trade him to Seattle. If they're willing to give up a 2nd rounder for Charlie Whitehurst what would Vincent Jackson pull? A Herschel Walker type return?

3 game suspension for VJ.
If he's sitting out then the suspension runs concurrently, so he or the chargers won't have to deal with it when/if he comes back.
But if he's traded he'll sit out 3 games. 7/1/2010 11:56:20 AM |
