the insurance on my WRX was ridiculous. The insurance rate kept going up even though the car got older, and I have a clean driving record. When I finally sold my four year old WRX and bought a new fullzise truck, my insurance rate dropped 50%. 4/3/2010 1:54:32 PM |

You'd think it wouldn't be that bad on a sedan that didn't even have that much power and put down even less of it to the wheels. It's not particularly easy to crash due to the AWD setup and weight distribution, unless you have very little driving experience and you try to push it extremely hard.
It's probably just that a lot of 16-18 year old idiots got their hands on them and thought they were invincible. I can imagine quite a few understeered into ditches and shit entering turns too fast. It seems to me that a WRX would be significantly more forgiving and harder to crash than a BMW 330i, for example and it's not really much quicker than an RSX Type S once you're rolling (But I bet the RSX-S has inflated insurance rates as well). I've never been impressed by the power of a stock WRX, it's just not a car that accelerates particularly hard and it's not really any more oversteer prone than an EG Hatchback, EK Hatchback, EP Hatchback, DC2 Type R, DC5 Type S or Type R (Which are all FWD Hondas), etc. It's just a fun car that's very capable in lots of different kinds of road conditions. Maybe idiots think that AWD means you can stop a lot better in the snow or that turn in is better or something. I don't really know.
It seems to me that the insurance rate is very inflated for the performance you get. I'd rather be driving a K20A (Not A2, but A, with a proper close ratio LSD equipped transmission), or even a B18C5, swapped EG hatch personally:
DIE AT THE HANDS OF THE EG MISTAH WRX. (Note: It shows up later on, but I'm obsessed with BMI and Hot Version so I am always happy to get the opportunity to watch 40 minutes of it son) ] 4/4/2010 7:53:43 AM |

doesn't look like fun... looks like a sh*t ton of understeer with a straight away rocket. kinda like a built srt4. 4/4/2010 10:56:19 AM |

I don't get that impression at all from this EG. Yes, it was at the upper limit of power for the chassis to still handle well, but it appeared to handle very well. Neither driver had any major understeer issues. I don't think we were watching the same video honestly, the car appeared to be rotating VERY well. Turn in looked very good and transitions through chicanes looked good. As someone who owned an SRT-4 for quite some time and who has also driven swapped hatches and CRX's, I can tell you that a properly set up EG is going to handle WAY better than a "built SRT-4" (Which I assume to be 400+whp because they will usually put down 400whp for quite a few years on a completely stock engine with a good tune).
Yes, it's FWD son. What exactly do you expect it to do? Do you know what a properly set up FWD vehicle drives like? It's not going to drift under power unless you set it up in a really dumb way. The car was set up to win, not fucking drift. I really can't believe you honestly think the car had a severe understeer problem. When these guys encounter cars that handle like shit, they tell you. BMI's drivers complain a lot actually and they expect American cars and cars built by American tuners to handle like shit. You would have seen them tell you how poorly it handled and you would have seen it handling poorly if it sucked as badly as you claim. I actually remember when they drove a C6 corvette in Japan and Tsuchiya said "it handles like a sponge". He called it "scary". I'll find the video.
A car with lots of oversteer isn't really well tuned in my opinion. Perhaps for drifting, but not for winning a race. Very mild understeer is generally the preference. I can't stress enough just how well this EG appears to be turning in. As far as fun, I guess you must have to drift in order to have fun. I don't, so I'd have a shitload of fun in that EG. Note that I own a RWD vehicle, but I have no problem owning a properly set up FWD car.
A B18C5 swap is perfect for that chassis IMO. A little less power, but the combination is just beautiful.
Also, did you honestly get the impression that the WRX didn't understeer? To me it seemed to be understeering just as much, if not more, and that was really my point. ] 4/4/2010 11:40:25 AM |

saab and I are just so pleased with the EG because we are building a K24 bottom end swap for mine. expecting ~260whp. Just got the mounts welded in this morning. Saab, did you get the final drive gear yet? I want to put this transmission back together!!!!11111111 4/4/2010 12:40:41 PM |

on the subject of insurance...
my freshman year at NCSU I was briefly seeing a girl who had just gotten a brand new '04 WRX (this was in fall '03), automatic no less. We were in Greensboro near her parents house on a twisty back road. She goes "hey lets see how fast I can take this turn, I use to go fast around it in my Camry." Uh oh. Before I could object, she drops the hammer and massively oversteers through this 120 degree turn. She attempts to correct but we do a 360, hit a telephone pole, continue spinning, and end up in a ditch. Car was totaled and we got out without a scratch. We were both 18... 4/5/2010 12:42:05 AM |

that is pretty typical. i find it funny that the 07 sti is more expensive then the 08 sti for me to be insured on... i'm sure its cause the 08 being 4 doors with a hatch is considered a wagon even though most call it a hatch back. 4/5/2010 11:36:33 AM |

To the OP, congrats on the purchase, hope you're enjoying the car. I bought my 09 last summer after much waiting and trips to dealerships around the area. As far as insurance goes, I'm paying about $78/mo. I freaking love this car though, the power is a huge plus but what gets me off the most is the way it handles. i need to get this thing out on the track asap

Anybody know the range of difference between the standard WRX and the STi for insurance? And $75 a month isn't terrible. Specter, who are you with?
I am either going to be immature and buy an STi soon, or do the smart, responsible thing and buy something good on gas mileage with less insurance costs... 4/26/2010 1:02:36 PM |

I'm with Geico and have 1 speeding ticket in the past 3 years. i can't imagine it being that much worse for an STi.
And insurance really shouldn't be the main factor for deciding what kind of car to buy. Just evaluate your needs/wants. If you want a do-it-all car that's fast, fun to drive, and want to get some track days in as well you cant go wrong with a WRX or STI. I personally couldn't justify getting the STI if I wasn't going to track it, though. 4/26/2010 2:53:34 PM |

$75/month ain't bad. I'm paying around $100/month for the S2000 with $250 collision and $0 glass. On a clean driving record, no points. 4/26/2010 2:56:40 PM |

I'm going to go ahead and disagree with this, particularly for low speed corners. I have so much fun in the Type-R and the EVO primarily because they oversteer, they're playful. In comparison, the last gen. Civic Si was a wet noodle, and not at all fun to drive. I liked to dial in low speed oversteer through more aggressive shock damping in the rear, and high speed understeer through a stiffer sway bar in the front back when I was into that sort of thing.
You guys have it good with insurance... Even w/a $1k deductible, I'm paying multiples of what's quoted here. I will say this though, in my experience the limited high performance version of cars tend to be cheaper to insure. I've checked an STI vs. WRX, Z06 vs. C6, GT3 vs. C2 and GTS vs. RT-10, Type-R vs. GS-R, always the case* *Except for EVO vs. Lancer, I suspect because the base car's not exactly comparable in any meaningful way to the bad boy brother.4/26/2010 4:00:32 PM |

there's a lot of variation in coverage limits. Some people only carry $30k, others $100k. I always have to keep $1M limits because I work out of my vehicle and the job sites require it. 4/27/2010 12:21:17 PM |

only keeping $30k in coverage sounds like a pretty stupid choice to make, but a lot of people do it. 4/27/2010 12:25:45 PM |

My lia. is around $300k. I used to keep it at 1MM but it was just above $2k/year per car, which is a bit excessive. I have terrible driving record, I've lost my license several times due to accumulation of points, but never a DWI, or really anything other than speeding or "reckless driving". This is before I found out messing around in empty parking lots can be considered "endangerment", and that it's worth paying for lawyers... 4/27/2010 1:54:13 PM |
