Quote : | "Senate takes up jobs bill By Tami Luhby, senior writerFebruary 23, 2010: 6:34 AM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Senate voted Monday to push forward a $15 billion jobs creation bill that would give businesses a tax break for hiring the unemployed.
Five Republicans -- including newly elected Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass. -- reached across the aisle to approve the procedural measure, which passed by a 62-30 vote. One Democrat did not support it. A final vote on the bill should take place in a few days.
The 4-prong bill would:
*Exempt employers from Social Security payroll taxes on new hires who were unemployed;
*Fund highway and transit programs through 2010;
*Extend a tax break for business that spend money on capital investments like equipment purchases;
*Expand the use of the Build America Bonds program, which helps states and municipalities fund capital construction projects." |
According to MSNBC the real Senate vote is happening on Wednesday

Quote : | "Bipartisan jobs bill clears GOP filibuster The tally sets up a vote on Wednesday to actually pass the measure
WASHINGTON - A bipartisan jobs bill cleared a GOP filibuster on Monday with critical momentum provided by the Senate's newest Republican, Scott Brown of Massachusetts.
The 62-30 tally to advance the measure to a final vote on Wednesday gives both President Barack Obama and Capitol Hill Democrats a much-needed victory — even though the measure in question is likely to have only a modest boost on hiring.
Brown and four other Republicans broke with GOP leaders to advance the measure." |
A dem vote against and some GOPs voted for it, with much more of the party that is in power of course favoring it. It is almost like the wheel is starting to turn again!
It looks like they're doing it more incrementally, which I'm guessing is a lesson they learned off the health care reform attempt:
Quote : | "The administration Monday said it strongly supports the $15 billion jobs measure, but indicated it is one step in the job creation effort. The president wants lawmakers to take up a bill that would increase small businesses' access to credit.
Reid said the Senate will vote on extending tax provisions and small business job measures in the near future." |

*Exempt employers from Social Security payroll taxes on new hires who were unemployed; A great idea, only they didn't go far enough: exempt employers from all payroll taxes.
*Fund highway and transit programs through 2010; Were they not funded by the friggin' highway bill last year?
*Extend a tax break for business that spend money on capital investments like equipment purchases; - Great, more corporate pork. Gotta reward your lobbyists at least once a week, I guess.
*Expand the use of the Build America Bonds program, which helps states and municipalities fund capital construction projects." - Just what we need, even more fiscally bankrupt local and state governments. The recent credit card law made it illegal for fiscally responsible 20 year olds to get a credit card, then they turn around and make it even easier to grant credit to local governments that have demonstrated their inability to be fiscally responsible? 2/23/2010 10:41:42 PM |

^cute. THe graphic says CREATED 2.1 Million Jobs.
However the actual "statistic", if you can call it that, is that it did SAVE or create UP TO 2.1M jobs. 2/25/2010 10:27:07 AM |

2.1 million people have jobs who would not have had jobs otherwise.
Save/create is semantics. 2/25/2010 10:33:55 AM |

And, perhaps, 2.1 million other people lost or failed to get jobs because of the bill.
And the 2.1 million jobs saved needed to be destroyed for the good of the nation. 2/25/2010 10:37:45 AM |

Thats the point Boone. The whole SAVED thing is a total BS factor.
For instance, my typing this saved 10 jobs. Prove me wrong, where is your evidence?
You cannot measure a saved job unless it was directly funded by those monies. So you cannot accurately gauge how much this money helped...which is exactly the point. Its why you see the range of 700k to 2.1M jobs... its just a guess. And with the amount of money spent, and good ole Sheriff Joe watching over EVERY DOLLAR, we should know have to guess.2/25/2010 10:50:37 AM |

Sure, it's impossible to know exactly how many jobs have been created, but the numbers coming out of independent research firms aren't guesses, either.

"Currently, the unemployment rate is around 10 per cent." Unemployment has risen faster than the people that are producing your numbers said it would without stimulus. If they are right about the jobs saved, perhaps they are right about the unemployment rate without stimulus, which implies the number of jobs destroyed by the stimulus is far larger than the number of government jobs it created.2/25/2010 12:38:05 PM |

Yes. The Senate has no money of its own, so it must take resources from the rest of society before it can dispense them. 2/28/2010 1:56:48 AM |

Senate passes jobs bill for Obama’s signature Measure expected to be first of several in bid to lower unemployment rate http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35910093/ns/business-economy_at_a_crossroads/
Quote : | ""It is the first of what I hope will be a series of jobs packages that help to continue to put people back to work," Obama said after the vote.
The bill contains about $18 billion in tax breaks and a $20 billion infusion of cash into highway and transit programs. Among other things, it exempts businesses that hire people who have been unemployed for at least 60 days from paying the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax through December and gives employers an additional $1,000 credit if new workers stay on the job a full year. Taxpayers will have to reimburse Social Security for the lost revenue.
"This is just the first, certainly not the last, piece of legislation that we will put forward in relation to jobs," said its sponsor, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. "If we don't create jobs, the economy will not move forward."
It also extends highway and mass transit programs through the end of the year and pumps in $20 billion in time for the spring construction season. That money would make up for lower-than-expected gasoline tax revenues. " |

I probably should have titled this Jobs Bills coming this year.
http://www.etheridgeforcongress.org/details.cfm?id=381
Quote : | "March 24, 2010 House Approves Job Creation Infrastructure Bill
Rep. Bob Etheridge, the only North Carolina-member of the House Ways and Means Committee, today voted to pass legislation to spur job creation and reinvigorate our economy.
H.R. 4849, the Small Business and Infrastructure Jobs Act, passed the House by a vote of 246-178 and invests in local rebuilding projects and a range of bipartisan proposals to help small businesses grow.
"Small businesses are the engine of our economy and right now they need help in order to grow, expand, and hire more workers," Etheridge said. "Our economy has stabilized but it won't truly begin growing again until these businesses have support to come back off the sidelines and start to hire again."
The legislation will invest billions to encourage small business growth and extends the highly successful Build America Bonds program, which has helped finance local projects all over North Carolina's Second District. The bonds are an effective tool for job creation and a vital resource for state and local governments seeking to invest in schools, sewers, hospitals and transit projects.
H.R. 4849 also extends the TANF Emergency Fund which states can use for a jobs program to subsidize employers, including small businesses, who hire unemployed workers. This Fund is currently on track to put more than 160,000 Americans back to work, with more to come.
The legislation will work along with the HIRE Act, a new law signed by the President earlier this month, which included an Etheridge proposal to provide a hiring tax credit for businesses that hire new workers or expand payroll.
"During this economic crisis, we've got to help our small businesses provide jobs for the American people," Etheridge said. "As a former small business owner, I support this common sense legislation to create jobs on Main Street."" |
