Sounds like you got a good deal then and you should be able to make money off that knife if it's in good condition and you ever decide to sell it (Hard to see from the pics). I've never actually seen or heard of anyone having one of those, so I'd say it's quite rare.

At some point you'll have to get some better pics of it man. Keep that shit in good shape! All Spyderco knives are collectible and rare ones can fetch a big sum of money if you wait a while to sell them. ATS-34 is a good steel too, it's essentially the equivalent of 154CM and Spyderco hasn't used it for some time now.

I'll post a hi-res pic of it ITT in the next week or so, like I said my actual camera is at work, I was using my shitty Blackberry camera

Back in the day, pre-Brady era and what not, aside from copping 30+2 Glock 23 magazines (yeah I said +2 and not +1), I loved me some Spydercos...before that I was into Gerbers, but Spydero just got me hooked...I had a few Spyderco knives with the plastic handles, but the C67 pictures has a metal handle

I got my dad a sweet one one year...like a fish-gutting Spyderco...had a curved point, good stuff

I also remember back in the day how the Spyderco Police was always taboo and lots of websites didnt even show pictures of it...I always wanted one of those...until I saw one and saw it appeared to be fairly average

I don't care for the stainless police, but I like the Police 3 G-10 a lot. It's what the original should have been from the beginning. The original design is WAY too slick for actual fighting purposes where blood and sweat actually gets on your hands. The Police 3 has a full flat ground VG-10 blade with jimping on the thumb ramp and in the choil area as well as good G-10 handles (It has full stainless steel liners) with 4 way pocket clip mounting capability. It's a lot of knife for the size and weight.

Pretty much all of the FRN handled Spydercos now have full stainless steel liners with the exception of the Salt Series (For obvious reasons). I prefer G-10 as the outer handle material with full stainless steel or titanium liners.

Here's my Po-Po 3 G-10 son. One thing I forgot to mention is that I like how thin it is. It makes it very easy to carry despite the overall dimensions:

Hell yeah, Damascus son!

Personally, I'd save a bit more and go for this if I were spending a a few thousand bucks on a knife though:

Go to the site, it's worth it because their photos are massive when you actually click on them. CLICK ON THE GOD DAMNED PHOTOS. Fucking incredible knife, that thing is actually made of pure LSD son. The file work is awesome, there are jewels inlaid in the fucker and that Damascus is SICK.

You like? Brian Tighe is an incredible custom knife maker (His name is pronounced "Tie"), that's why the knife is called the "Twist Tighe". Everything he makes is a clever play on words with his name, which I also think is cool. This is him son:

^ I really like the avionics package in the Remos GX. It makes flying in general a lot better, especially instrument flying. I love how much information is right there and this thing has a really comprehensive sensor package, so you've got a LOT of data on the current engine condition.

Anyway, hell yeah son, I went up today and did some simulated instrument flight. It went really well, I'm surprised how quickly I'm picking it back up. Did a few landings too and they're coming right along. The Remos GX is actually a pretty tricky aircraft to land IMO, it's not as forgiving as you'd think. The stupidly low weight of the aircraft actually works against you big time in certain situations.

We're moving right along son, I'm very pleased with the progress. Next flight is Monday sons.

Oh and we almost saw a skydiver fucking faceplant into the asphalt. It was really fucking scary man. I don't think it was intentional either. He was probably trying to show off and spiral in, but he ended up in a steep dive and as I walked out onto the ramp I heard some super loud canopy noise overhead. I looked up and his body was level with the ground, like in a 90 degree fucking vertical dive at extremely high speed. I thought he was about to hit the asphalt at around 40mph dude. It really looked like he was going that fast. He pulled out of the dive so low that he landed directly on his ass rather than his feet. The crowd of people were all like "WWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEUUUUWWW" with excitement but I think he about shit himself. I asked someone about it and they said that didn't appear to be intentional, that he seriously almost smacked the fucking asphalt.

Going flying tomorrow son, should be good. I'll be ready to take up deh sons pretty soon. We'll see if anyone is cool enough to go up son.

Note that it doesn't look like there will be too many people that fall into the category of "cool enough" son.

Progressing very quickly with the flight son. Did cross country flight to Tri County today and it was really good son. I averaged about 82 knots on the way there and about 90 knots on the way back (Ground speed, not airspeed). I saw the Tillery State Prison Farm from the air, which is fucking HUGE. It is mind boggling how huge that place is, the amount of land they have is just retarded. The map wont really do it justice, but you could probably fit an RDU sized airport on that property.

This is the Tillery Prison Farm:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=1984+Caledonia+Drive,+Halifax,+NC&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS285US285&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=1984+Caledonia+Dr,+Halifax,+NC+27839&gl=us&ei=LnnDS5DHNIT68AaJ9bDzCA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CAcQ8gEwAA

This is the airport I flew to (It was pretty far away from here but it was a good flight):

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&q=Tri+County+Airport+NC&fb=1&gl=us&hq=Tri+County+Airport&hnear=NC&view=map&cid=10387019930128151259&iwloc=A&ved=0CEQQpQY&sa=X&ei=Z3bDS7-VDafkygSC4tnzBg

Then I had to do a final approach with a helicopter doing its approach right beside me. It was doing an approach to the taxiway, which is like 200 feet off the side of the runway, so there is very little separation and it makes it kind of hair raising. Had some difficulty contacting RDU to open my flight plan, I never could get anyone on either frequency (122.45 or 122.65) for some reason, I guess the dude was busy. So I never did open the flight plan I filed, but whatever.

Not that it matters really, I just feel like typing about it to nobody today son.

Oh and I also encountered a Bald Eagle in flight, it was fast as fuck man. I'd say it was going 40-50mph, really insane speed for a beast like that.

I almost killed it, it could have caused severe damage to the aircraft had the aircraft impacted it.

I went flying yesterday, it was a perfect day for flying, nice and calm. Unfortunately I needed to practice my crosswind landings so the one time I wanted it to be windy it wasn't. I got some good practice on soft field, short field, and forward slips too. I've got my annual flight review coming up so I gots to practice.

On a side note, to those of you that have had your license for 2+ years, I heard a rumor that when you get it renewed, it doesn't have to be with the same level of FAA inspector that did your initial check ride. Can anyone confirm this?

^ Good son! I'm not sure on what is included in the biannual flight review (I'm pretty sure that's what you're asking about), but it should be easy enough to find details on whatever you're referring to online.

I haven't flown in about 6 years now... (thank you college!). Once I graduate, I'm hoping to slowly get back into it. Any of you know any good instructors around Raleigh (Stanford, maybe?)? I'll need a ground school refresher (I plan on getting new books for self study as well) and then probably at least 15 hours of retraining, then a medical, then my check ride (Got my PPL in 2003, haven't flown since 2004).

Well, if you mean Sanford I think they have stuff out there but I don't have any experience with them.

http://www.b-bar-daviation.com/

This guy named Robert Parker is always sending me stuff in the mail offering his services, so you might look into him. He's somewhere near Raleigh I believe.

I like Louisburg though, personally. NC Rotor and Wing is guaranteed to get the job done right in my opinion, it's the best operation I've had the privilege of working with. They do things right, they don't rush you and they do it by the book. No half-assed shit, no shortcuts, etc. They'll make sure you're exactly where you need to be! I suggest flying the Remos GX, it's an excellent aircraft and it's a lot more fun than a Cessna 152.

^thanks. yeh, I mean Sanford. I'll look into those. I never really liked the Cessna's, probably because all we had was a 152 that was way too small for two larger guys... and I trained on a piper cherokee 140... so the high wing was a different animal

^From what I've read, since you already have your PPL you won't need to go on a full fledged check ride. Once your CFI feels like you are competent enough, they'll just do the bi-annual review, endorse your logbook, and bam you'll be good for two years.

Today was serious son.

Real serious son.

The winds were highly variable and really gusty. Every landing was insanely bumpy and required EXTREME amounts of correction the entire time. The airplane would gain or lose 10mph in like 1 or 2 seconds regularly (Really made it difficult not to overspeed the flaps) and would go from -800fpm to +600fpm and back in just a few seconds on approach. There was this severe downdraft right off the end of the runway too that would suck the plane down and make you go way short if you didn't add a ton of power. It was really intense, I was concentrating really hard and I was sweating too son.

There were a lot of updrafts and downdrafts in the pattern, particularly off the end of runway 23 on the base leg and on final (Which is what I mentioned before). The rate of climb during the climbout was anywhere from 300fpm in a downdraft to 1400fpm in an updraft. In level flight the updrafts and downdrafts would make you go anywhere from -500fpm to +500fpm in very short order and it made it very difficult to hold the 1400ft pattern altitude. These updrafts and downdrafts usually happen, but today it was getting rather severe for the aircraft we were in (Remos GX, a 670lb aircraft empty).

Plus, the winds were highly variable and were going from a headwind to a crosswind (I'd say there was about 70 degrees of variation and it was unpredictable, it would sometimes change back and forth that much more than once just while you were on final) with lots of gusts. It made me have to fight the entire time to keep the aircraft centered and on the glideslope and it made it hard to hold a good pattern. I greased it in every single time though son, although I did carry a tad bit too much airspeed on touchdown for some of the landings (But they were all smooo son, smoooooo). I also did a lot of one wheel landings due to the gusty crosswind.

Yesterday was serious son.

Differential heating son.

The runway was hot but surrounding surfaces were cold because of a cold but very sunny morning. Extreme updrafts and downdrafts on the entire base and final legs of the left hand pattern for runway 23 created serious issues. At times I was getting a 900fpm descent rate and other times I was climbing at 300fpm even though I had the prop down at 3000rpm (Full throttle is a touch over 5000rpm with the Rotax and idle is around 1600-1800rpm depending upon the propeller you're using, 3000rpm is the standard approach descent setting).

Once you got over the threshold of the runway, you just floated and floated for hundreds of feet. The damned aircraft just did not want to come down. Even the Twin Otter practicing in the pattern at the same time was having serious issues with floating. When I was taxxing back in I watched it float ~500ft down the runway with the rear wheels about 2 or 3 feet off the ground because of the updraft coming off the pavement. I've not seen too many aircraft that large floating like that. It was one of the most challenging flights I've had so far actually. It was almost kind of dangerous, in that if you didn't make sure you did a full stall landing, then you ran a serious risk of being popped back up into the air after touchdown. The differential heating was absolutely ridiculous son.

They are overly popular IMO for a few reasons, BUT, there are a lot of misconceptions and those "advantages" aren't as big as they might appear initially (Apparently high tip strength, for example). The claims about a stronger tip MAY or MAY NOT be true depending upon the design. They have some advantages but in an all around knife, I suggest a drop point or clip point blade with a good amount of sweep. I prefer the bowie blade profile.

This series will explain those away. Note, this dude has a SERIOUS collection with multiple $1000+ folding knives.

Sorry for not just answering it outright, but this dude has the best explanation I've ever seen of the advantages of a Western Tanto and misconceptions surrounding the design. The visuals really help you understand what he's talking about and after watching that, you'll have a completely new appreciation for the differences in each Tanto. Thus, I just suggest watching it instead of reading some 50 page response I give.

The flight went well, it was a little bit less insane than it was the other day on approach, but it was actually worse once you got right down near the ground. I had a lot of issues with gusts during the flare, which caused the aircraft to either yaw or pop up into the air a bit. The landings were all smooth, but they were very challenging.

Next I go for a quick stage check with another instructor on Monday and then I should be moving on to the next stage in my training. Very cool shyte son!

Relatively soon son. It's coming along quickly, so I'll let you know. I would think a month or something, but I can't say for sure. Maybe less, maybe more. It depends on how the weather works out and stuff, but if it works out the way I'm hoping, in 4 weeks or so. Whenever possible, I'm trying to fly every single day back to back, so that will speed things along nicely. This stage check requires me to book time with another instructor though, so I have to wait until Monday to fly again. From there I'm hoping to fly every day I possibly can next week.

Bill Finagin came down from Maryland, so I got to see his Pitts S2-C today. It's got the same paint scheme as his other one that I flew, but it's a different tail number. I guess he either has two now or something happened to the old one. He was doing some spin training with this dude out there. They practiced right over the airport, so that was cool because I was able to watch it from the ground.

Kai Tak (Hong Kong) may be what you're thinking of. That one I posted of the airport in Honduras is more challenging though IMO.

I also like this field (Saba, it's near St. Maarten):

Princess Juliana is a pretty serious Take-Off, not a lot of room for error with a fully loaded aircraft:

^ I love how it says "Cock" on that last video.

Did I mention you should buy a Cold Steel Roach Belly if you want a really high value fixed blade knife? We're talking $10-$12 for a decent fixed blade son. It works extremely well as a utility knife and is a super nasty stabber and slicer for defensive use. It actually has functional jimping and the choil area acts as a guard too, which is good because the handle is kind of slick and cheap. It's the kind of knife you can buy like 5 of and just store in random places and forget about (4116 Krupp Stainless, low end shit but it wont rust very easily at all).
