i wonder how the in-out system is going to work for tomorrow's show.

can you come and go as you please? if so, i'm going to the first act or two, then hitting up a bar for a few beers, then hitting the last two acts

Considering that there's room for 5500 people (4500 fixed, 1000 grass) for a free show, I doubt they'll hit that capacity tomorrow night.

I havent seen this place yet, and looking at the plans it seems that the lawn is going be a miserable place to be. Thoughts from anyone thats seen it? Should I cough up the extra money for seats?

I rode past it earlier today, and it doesn't even look like it's complete. I couldn't get enough of a view of the lawn area through the fence to give you a good answer to the above though.

Yeah I've seen all that, and it makes the lawn area look tiny. Just wondering if that is actually the case.

the lawn area indeed is tiny. but i'm a stander/dancer when i'm at concerts, so it doesn't matter to me

but it's much closer to the stage than the lawn at Walnut Creek

lol from a news interview just now: "Who would have thought this little town would have a shimmery wall and an amphitheatre right downtown?"

^^was the sound affected at all by the shimmer wall? Was there a considerable rise between the standing room in the front and the seats?

i was amazed at how good the sound was. i think the shimmer wall and the parking decks help out, keeping in a lot of the sound. sure beats the hell out of Koka, but that isn't saying a whole lot.

there was a huge standing room area in front of the temporary seats, but i can't imagine that will remain once concert season is in full swing and they get all of the seats installed. but the entire viewing area is at a nice slant, so the view from the grass was ideal. i can't see myself paying 10-20 bucks extra to sit in a chair. that's the beauty of this being a small, intimate venue. the grass is pretty damn close to the stage. the bathrooms are air-conditioned, you can smoke anywhere you want, there are beer stands everywhere. it's pretty great

i'll get some pics up soon

I'm surprised the lawn area isn't at least 40% of the total space there. Just seems like that would be a better design for patrons.

I took a trip around the venue yesterday and it looks great. Brought tons of people to downtown. The cops shut down a few roads around the venue. People walking across the tracks from the boylan area, bars and outdoor areas filled up, and the sound seemed pretty good. It really will look cool for the performers to look back at the skyline and the shimmer wall.

The dirt pile behind the stage is a little bit questionable, but i am sure this is temporary or semi-temporary, and the black out siding that they put on the fences to prevent viewing from outside the venue sort of looks like they borrowed it from an aquarium, but these are minor things. If they continue to add to this place, and re-invest in making it more permanent as the years go by, it could really be a great venue!

i agree, they really should have made the lawn bigger. but lucky for me, I'm more of a stander/walker/wanderer/dancer than a sitter, so it works out just fine.

so as you can see, there's a ton of room between the temporary seats and the stage.

i think the dirt hill behind the stage is there for good. yet another deterrent against freeloaders trying to catch a free concert.

The lawn is small, but it may have looked strange to have a huge lawn (walnut creek style) in the middle of downtown. I think they were going for a more urban look with a bit of lawn to satisfy those who desire that experience. Plus, I am guessing its much less costly to maintain plastic/metal chairs and concrete, they just pick up the trash and turn on a hose and its ready for the next show.

^Great pics.

It was mentioned that that is to prevent traffic issues for people driving by the venue on that side so they wouldn't look down into the shows.

I am not against the barrier, just hope they plant grass, add a covering, create a man made barrier that looks better, or otherwise adjust it so it doesn't look like a huge pile of red dirt!

the lawn got pretty full for The Connells. i'd say there were 3000-4000 people there around 10pm

good to hear about the sound. i know Raleigh hired the same consultant that did the sound at the similar atlanta space, so it sounds like that made a big difference. in comparison, Koka declined to pay for a consultant and it shows.

i'd think they'd do something, cause i'm not sure the runoff behind the stage can be all that super... but i got a art + design degree, not landscape architecture, so i really wouldn't know

in the drawing on page 1, it's kinda tough to see what it's supposed to be, cause it just sort of comes across as a "nature blob"

fuck all that cement

more lawn ftw, you know they are going to rip up some of the seating and add lawn for next summer. that shit is tiny now.

no doubt it's still a work in progress. very sterile and some things were put together haphazardly

i think for next year's concert season, it'll look better. but IMO it still looks pretty damned nice

It's not a bad start from the looks of it. I think it will look better come next summer with more lawn and hopefully something in place of the big dirt pile in the back.

I just found some more pics of the amphitheatre. These were taken right before the opening concert started on Friday.

Not one picture of the crowd or the shimmer wall on wral or N&0, seems sort of strange. I am guessing it was smaller than expected, or the media doesnt have good back/behind stage access to take pics.

the allotment of general admission tickets sold out, so there's 1000 right there

and it was the opening show of their new tour, so that probably brought out fans from hundreds of miles around.

i bet it was close to a complete sellout

i really loved the crowd shots from wncn

a bunch of twentysomething women who were ten years old when they broke, i understand

but the two dudes in polo shirts throwing up horns...wtf?

even if you just took your girlfriend to the show, why would you jump into the shot

ncstatetke either works for, has some vested interest in this venue, or just loves defending what is, based on current booking, a horrendous decision for the city.

the show last Friday was a dress rehearsal night to give the staff some practice, thus there was no cover

that's the only free show

but The Black Crowes are a steal at $25

i was talking more or less a cover as something to protect you from being rained on, not a charge to get in

lol

The plan originally came with a large canopy that was donated by denver (or boston) but it would have cost too much to refinish/re-fabric and string up so I think we scrapped that idea. Some sort of cover would be nice in the future though.

my good deed for the day:

livenation promotion for $10 tix (no fees, no taxes, etc) at select shows. Barenaked Ladies happens to be one of the shows. regularly $19 each. so a 2-for-1 deal, essentially

who gives a fuck? it's a super cheap way to spend a few hours before going to the bars.

i'm sure there are plenty of ppl who like BNL and plenty who still like Creed and will be stoked to grab a $10 ticket

you're as bad as the guy i heard saying, "there's a live band playing at the pour house, we could do that"

granted, sometimes a terrible band can be more entertaining than a good one

but not for $10

and especially not fucking CREED

i'm sure there's at least one TWWer who likes Creed and was jazzed about being able to see them for 10 bones

thus, i did a very good deed and that warms my soul
