Guys remember the BMW Concept Gran Coupe, which will be made as a "4-door coupe" to compete with the MB CLS and Audi A7? I don't know if they would call it an 8-Series or stick with 6-Series. Here is a refresher:
Well now the proper 6-Series Coupe has been revealed, basically a 2-door version of the Gran Coupe. BMW of course calls it a concept, but BMWs production vehicles look 99% like the production ready concepts they show the year before.
To really see the details of the new exterior styling, check out the hi res pics at the link below, as well as 2 videos:
http://www.worldcarfans.com/110091928489/bmw-concept-6-series-coup-revealed-videos-updated/highphotos
I love the "Waterfall Dash", but I prefer to call it the "Stringy Cheese Dash"
And finally, someone has rendered what the new M6 will look like, and going by past M models, it seems pretty accurate. If so, damn it is haaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwt!!!

BMW to market new small FWD car line in U.S.
http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100930/OEM/100939978/1130 http://www.autoblog.com/2010/10/04/bmw-developing-fwd-four-cylinder-small-car-line-for-sale-in-u-s
Quote : | "BMW seems to think American buyers are ready to sink their teeth into small luxury vehicles. The automaker has reconfirmed plans to unleash a wave of small, front-wheel drive creations positioned below the 1 Series and due to go on sale in the U.S. market. The vehicles will be sold under a new class called UKL, and there are supposedly several different body styles just waiting to pounce on unsuspecting North American buyers. The news came via Ian Robertson, a BMW board member for sales and marketing, who also said that the full line will pack a four-cylinder engine when the cars debut before 2013." |
So FWD BMWs are coming for sure... BUT, what about this ad from some years ago:

Finally a new BMW design I like. 6 Series coupe looks good!
But I'm really hating on their current design theme of integrating the exhaust pipes into the rear bumpers as rectangles/trapezoids. That's just hideous - looks horrible on the 5 Series as well.
The quad tips on the M version look way better! 10/5/2010 4:41:32 PM |

going by what he said (bmw 1-series m coupe), the official name would be i guess BMW 1 M... such a shame it can't be called M1.
p.s. even at an "unveiling" they have tape on the lights

I love how they're drawing out the revealing of this car like it's something special. They're making a bigger fuss than they did for the last M3. Unless they changed the drooping lines on the side and completely redesigned the headlights its still gonna be an ugly looking car. 10/8/2010 8:44:01 AM |

That new 6-series is a nice enough car I suppose--I like the nose and the interior--but does the rest of the car look like an oversized 335 to anyone else? I suppose it has a few distinctive elements but I'm just not feeling it. 10/8/2010 3:01:02 PM |

Anyway, for BMW lovers, especially relevant to all the discussions about how heavy cars are these days and how old school BMW Ms were so much better:

Retro Spin: 1988 BMW M5
25 Years After Launch, Original M5 Still Stirs The Soul
Quote : | ""How would you like to drive a 1988 M5 up Highway 1?"
That wasn't a call I was expecting, especially in the late summer of 2010. As far as I was concerned, any car from the 1980s still on the road was sure to be showing a few hundred thousand miles, springs coming through the seats and air conditioning blowing warm.
However, BMW North America was on the other end of the phone, and the vehicle we were discussing had been pulled out of a factory museum on the East Coast and shipped to California in a covered truck. Not only did it have low miles, but this unique model was in near-mint condition.
The 1988 BMW M5 is special in more ways than one. In addition to being the first-generation M5, its production was extremely limited and each and every copy sold in North America was jet black with blacked-out trim. And there was the powerplant... BMW had essentially dropped the M1's 24-valve 3.5-liter racing engine under the hood.
You can guess what my answer was." |

BMW releases engine details, weight, and pricing of the upcoming M1 1 M.
The engine is from the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, so this is basically a 135is, with just 40 hp more than the 135i. If they are going to call it the 1 M, why didn't they go ahead and throw in around 375 hp, so as to have a bigger jump from the 135i?
Anyway, they are playing it up as a revival of the first M3.
Quote : | "First and foremost, the company has confirmed power will be provided by a bi-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with approximately 340 hp (254 kW / 345 PS). It will be mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission, so flappy-paddle fans need not apply.
The car will weigh around 1500 kg (3,307 lbs) and feature a chassis, braking system and rear differential similar to the M3. These tweaks will enable the M Coupe to be ten seconds faster around the Nordschleife than the previous M3 (E46).
According to Albert Biermann, Head of Development at BMW M GmbH, "The 1-Series M Coupe is completely in the tradition of the first BMW M3. It is compact, focused on the essential, and presents outstanding driving dynamics. In addition, it opens the door to BMW M - in particular its price will also make it more accessible than our other products."
The 1-Series M Coupe will be unveiled in December, before it debuts at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Sales are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011 and pricing will be "between the 135i Coupe and the M3 Coupe, with a clear tendency towards the 135i."" |
Looking at base MSRPs of the 135i ($36,350) and the M3 ($58,400) and going a 1/3rd of the way into the difference between them, that means a base price of $43,700, but more likely 40% of the way into the difference, which would mean $45,170.

It's been reported that they're only producting 2700 of this vehicle, so look for lots of dealer markup. 10/14/2010 10:59:31 AM |

There is no updated pump, they are now replacing with refurbed pumps (they went to a new part number, now back the original). The 'recall' is the same thing they have always been doing, the 'new' pump will just fail again. 10/29/2010 3:00:54 PM |

Not bad....but the "pot belly" drooping sides still look horrendous.
I've seen some screen caps from that video above and I like the new headlights, but really really dislike the front bumper. It seriously looks aftermarket and almost tacky. I really have always enjoyed BMW's refined style but the 1M looks almost clownish. I expect they are trying to pick up the younger cross-shoppers for cars like the 370z etc.
That being said, I just picked up a 2011 335i Coupe (M-Sport, 6mt) and am really loving it, but I definitely would have taken a look at the 1M if it was out. I'm guessing it'll probably have a base MSRP of 43k...definitely the cheapest way to get an ///M in the garage

I'm not big into modding or aftermarket shit, but this look pretty easy for some serious gains. I know the N54 could really shine with a simple tune, but I have an N55 and am a little nervous about messing around with a tune before the engine has been proven.
Also.....how safe is a simple piggyback tune like this? don't want to fuck anything up, yo 12/16/2010 4:45:14 PM |

Review: 2011 BMW Alpina B7 http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/14/2011-bmw-alpina-b7-review-road-test
Here is what I am surprised at:
Quote : | "Try as it might, the BMW M3 Coupe can't lose the Alpina B7. The two of us are an unlikely automotive pair, playing cat-and-mouse on one long road to nowhere deep in the reaches of an unincorporated area of the California coastal mountains. The air is cool and the canyons are mostly quiet. Only the sound of two wailing V8s breaks the silence.
While the M3 dives into the corners with confidence, the B7 launches out with ferocious conviction. The M3 pulls energetically on the short straights, but the B7 puts its power down with resolve and steadily reels the smaller coupe back in. Even mid-corner, when the M3 is in perfect step, the B7 clenches a slightly wider line but still holds its ground.
We've been at this game for more than an hour, and neither of us is willing to raise a white flag. Only the illumination of the low fuel light in the smaller coupe has us calling it quits. Want to learn what it takes to harass an M3 owner? " |
That's just wow.
4,564 lbs, but 0-60 in 4.3 sec and quick enough around corners to keep up with an M3 Coupe for more than an hour!

So the 350/370z is another addition to the 911/GT3 that got lighter/gained power just the way it should be... But practically every other car I can think of did put on weight. They don't make "simple" cars anymore either, which is too bad. I remember the removable roof (controller) on my 84 944 getting an input from the DME about vehicle speed, which it got from the cable driven speedo to latch the roof in automatically if you set it on the car, but didn't attach it, and started to drive away... Today my e36 M3 blew a fuse for the passenger sidemarker b/c of a short in the power lock circuit to the trunk... Likewise even though the 370z/997 are lighter, they have a multitude of (some fiber optic) on board bus systems, w/lots of control units, and intercepting boxes, etc. This actually has the potential to save weight and technically makes things more reliable, but I'm not looking forward to having to troubleshoot something like that. 1/18/2011 10:08:43 PM |

You will not get used to it. It will always be like that. It is called CDV - clutch delay valve. Designed to protect the drivetrain at expense of horribly jerky shifts that can only be solved by riding the clutch 1-2sec longer. Very annoying. Take it out!1/18/2011 10:22:37 PM |

wow, what a stupid rube goldberg bunch of garbage. if they just could not resist the urge to idiot proof the roof, they should have just designed it to latch itself in when you turned on the ignition, or put the car in gear or something.1/18/2011 10:28:49 PM |
