^^^ I shoot a 7mm REM. I've never had a deer take a single step.

And I only use it when I have no other options (typically only on Thanksgiving day in VA when my entire family wants to hunt and we run low on rifles, I take it cause I feel that I'm the best one in the family to use it)."

cool. i bet it's cool to deer hunt with something that shoots that flat.

yeah...Nosler Partition, Bearclaw, TSX, various bonded bullets...there are many heavily constructed bullet options in the .224" size.

Any rifle is fine for deer hunting given the right hunter and the right conditions. You have to know yourself well to be able to make the call on whether or not it's a good idea.
Having said that I'm not confident enough to use a 223 for deer...but I also don't call myself a hunter.

The only caliber restriction in NC for deer hunting is with handguns. They have to be 357 if straightwalled, 243 if bottlenecked, or larger. I don't agree with the wording because you could go out there with a stupidly soft 357 mag load or 45LC soft lead wadcutter cowboy load and still be legal.

^^, ^^^ at the ranges a .223 would be even arguably appropriate, the flatness of the trajectory is irrelevant. Anything hotter than a .30-30 or .45-70 would shoot flatly enough that the differences would be negligible.

[Edited on April 9, 2010 at 3:12 PM. Reason : 7mm is a good round, but it's more than necessary for a whitetail at any normal range]

My brother has a .300 win that he deer hunts with. You wanna talk about overkill...I shot a deer with it once and could see through her as soon as I pulled the trigger.

you have a source for that? only caliber restriction i've ever found is:

Quote :
"Pistols
During the open hunting season for rabbits, squirrels, opossums,
raccoons, furbearing animals and legal nongame animals and
birds, these species may be taken with a pistol of .22-caliber
with a barrel not less than 5.5 inches in length.

A hunter or trapper lawfully taking wildlife by another method
may use a pistol to dispatch the animal or bird taken, except as
noted below.
Pistols may not be carried during the bow-and-arrow and
muzzleloader deer hunting seasons.
Deer, bear and wild boar may be taken with a handgun during the
established gun hunting season provided that the handgun is not
less than .24-caliber.Muzzleloading pistols are not legal for hunting.

It is unlawful to hunt or take wild turkeys with pistols."

Oh wow...apparently I haven't looked at the regs in a long time.
I am absolutely sure it used to be 357 & 243 when I was still at state because i had been looking into deer hunting with my 357.
They changed the minimum barrel length to 5.5" for both small and big game shortly after.

Apparently they don't care what you use anymore...

it's been a .22 cal requirement for at least 15 years in NC.

I love hearing rednecks explain why using a round deemed by almost every military in the world as being perfectly capable of taking down a person is somehow incapable of killing a smaller animal. If you gutshot a deer with a 30-06, you're not going to kill it any faster than you will with a bad shot from a .223. If you hit your target in a smart place, both weapons are effective.

currently, there are no state-wide rifle caliber requirements in NC for any game. the only caliber requirement for deer is for pistols only and says that they must be .24 or larger

Nobody is doubting that it will kill a deer. It's just that you're going to have a hell of a tracking job if you shoot a deer with a .223 in the lungs/ heart. The goal in the military is to hit your target several times quickly. The .223 offers little recoil and quick follow up shots. The goal deer hunting is one shot one kill and no tracking job. This is why most military sniper rounds are .308 and larger. One shot, one kill.

^^how are you liking your cw-9?

It's got some kick, more than the XD-9. I still have a tendency to break my wrist up but i'm getting better.

Also, i added a Hogue grip which has helped a lot.

that's not why the military picks other rounds for sniper fire. they use 308 and larger because of the range of the round, not the stopping power. 223 will drop a deer just as well from 100 yards or less as long as you're placing your shot well. you can gutshot a deer with a 30-06 from 20 yards away, and I guarantee you will be tracking that fucker for a quarter mile or more.

what are the better online store/auction sites for guns?

looking into a home protection shotgun (zero prior gun experience) sometime in the near future and was wondering who's legit.

a lot of online reviews recommend remington 870 20 gauge (so the wife can handle it). possibly the youth model (shorter stock by 1") since she's 5'3".

go to pawn shops. you'll save money b/c if you buy online you're gonna have to pay a fee to the FFL they ship it to.

remington 870 or mossberg 500. both are fine for home defense. if you teach her to shoot and she practices, she'll be fine with a 12 ga. in my experience, youth model only helps out folks with small frames when they're wing shooting (birds, skeet, etc.). for home defense, the youth model isn't gonna make much difference and that way you can get her a 12 ga.

but if for some reason you're dead set on a 20 ga, there's nothing wrong with them for home defense, just not as good as a 12 ga imo.
