dammit, Amazon just shipped my Revue this afternoon. From everything I've read of GoogleTV it'll be just like my Roku except it'll also do DLNA, and that's fine with me. 8/9/2011 11:03:59 PM |

I just went to best buy and played with a revue. I am fucking pumped now. it does all the things i thought it would. the keyboard is a little bulky but i am not spending 130% of the cost of the thing on a smaller remote. I will have to deal with it. 8/10/2011 8:53:16 PM |

I bought a revue on Friday and returned it Saturday.
The first thing I noticed was the channel # entry just seems too slow. For example, if I searched for Sportscenter and clicked on the ESPN link for channel 1500, it would dial 1-5 0-0 and I'd end up on channel 15, etc. It was pretty damn annoying.
And I couldn't for the life of me get my DLNA content to show up. I was able to get the directories but no content.
I watched some Starcraft matches on Justin.tv and I was pleased that the Flash support/web browser worked as well as it did. But that's about the only positive experience i had with the thing.] 8/15/2011 4:04:50 PM |

Got my Revue the other day, and I'm really not impressed with Google TV compared to my Roku. My biggest complaint with the Boxee box was the fact that it [half-assedly] used a browser to show you content. Oh, look, everything except for Pandora and Netflix are through the browser on Google TV... 8/15/2011 9:35:06 PM |

So you're saying you want better apps 8/16/2011 1:05:16 AM |
llama All American 841 Posts user info edit post |
Well, the only real apps are Pandora, Netflix, and I guess CNBC (which I've never used). Napster and NBA might also be apps, but I don't use them. There's also the Logitech Media Player, but I don't count that since it's not a core part of GoogleTV. Everything else is done through the browser, and the special sites they link to don't actually work. For example, the TBS site brings up a player, but no matter what you choose it starts to play Conan, the first item in the list. The same goes for the other news sites they link to. Amazon Instant Video is also done through the browser, and the player they use seems to be a browser plugin. This plugin actually does work pretty well, but while watching movies with it the GoogleTV screensaver will turn on unless you wiggle the mouse periodically. So what I'm saying is that actually want real apps. 8/16/2011 10:50:47 AM |

This is by far the worst thing about it. Since the new-ness has worn off a little bit, this device really isn't that cool. It is cool that you can use your phone as a remote, and kind of cool that you can browse the internet while the tv is in PIP but really it isn't that awesome.
I was under the impression that it was going to be able to import and search information from my TWC guide and DVR, but it can't. Also, when you save a channel as a bookmark, on your home screen it only shows the channel name and not what is currently playing so you have to turn to that channel via the terrible channel input as highlighted in the quote above to see what is playing. Of course there are work arounds where you can hit the search button, type in the channel name and see what is playing before you select it but it still won't get the channel right.
I absolutely love the idea behind this device but the execution has too many annoyances. Hopefully google will keep working the issues out and this will be awesome someday.
To answer your question though, I hooked up an external hard drive with some movies and music on it and the Logitech media player did very well with them. music was in mp3 and movies were in iphone format.

That feature seems to work just fine on my parents DirecTV DVR.
edit: well, by "just fine" I mean it works halfassedly and I wouldn't want to actually use it in everyday use, but I suppose it gets the job done. Kinda like just about every other half assed "feature" on the damn thing.

Yeah, it'll pick up the next instance of whatever show I'm looking for and allow me to...well, this is the part that sucks, it basically allows you to tune to that channel right now, or...there's another option, but it basically returns you to the menu. It doesn't allow you to actually set it to record. But yeah, it does at least, half-assed work, in that it shows you the next available viewing of the show.

I like the revue but I mainly want to use it for playing content I already have on my home file server (tv shows, movies).
I've never used dlna before. I installed tversity on my windows computer but it seems kind of clunky and I don't see how to easily organize my content..like: video -> tv shows -> seinfeld -> season 1. tversity just lumped everything together and ignored my folder organization.
does anyone have tips or a good guide for setting up a DLNA source with lots of tv/movie content? 8/29/2011 1:02:39 PM |

After you open the Logitech Media Player app and select Tversity, the last browsing category should be "folders". Using this option will allow you to browse your media using your native file structure, provided there aren't any issues w/ how TVersity is configured.8/29/2011 2:57:41 PM |

What does one have to do with the other?
Windows Phones don't get returned to retailers hand over fist (like the Revue) They aren't buggy as shit (like GoogleTV in general) They aren't a complicated mess to setup, configure and use (like GoogleTV in general)
Marketshare is not the sole measure of success. Windows Phone marketshare is small, but growing double digit percentages very month. GoogleTV marketshare is non-existant and not growing at all. 8/29/2011 5:57:53 PM |
DoubleDown All American 9382 Posts user info edit post |
Well the way I read that chart, the Windows Phone is about as much of a complete market failure as GoogleTV, dropping down to less than 2% marketshare (which you brought up in the first place, incorrectly) from almost 5% in less than a year. 8/29/2011 6:02:47 PM |

^That's because of the EOL on Windows Mobile 6.5, not the failure of WinPho7. Bit of a different story there. But again, none of which has anything to do with GoogleTV.

It's totally understandable that the returns are high. I'm thinking it was mentioned earlier in this thread and it's the absolute truth -- the Revue is moderately decent for the tinkering community and absolute shit for anyone who expected robust functionality out of the box.
I ended up keeping mine and have grown quite fond of it, but the first few days while I was ironing out the kinks were pretty rough. Ultimately, my biggest gripe remains unresolved, which is support for the DTS audio codec. I'm all about streaming ripped blu-rays over my network, many of which are encoded by default with DTS. HOPEFULLY, once the app market is up a third party will develop an audio player capable of handling the codec, or maybe Logitech will take its god-awful media player out of Beta and implement a decent feature set. Meh, I'll give it 6 more months and then I'll just build a media PC.
