See earlier post, I demand calculations before you claim that 120 mph somehow causes light to bend around vehicles that makes them invisible to people looking down the road

There is no hill

Well, let's say that it takes her 5 seconds to pull out from the intersection onto the road.

If he was going 120mph, that's 176 feet per second, meaning that he would have been 880 feet away when she pulled out to still collide with her.

Now, look at this map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=35.973648,-79.916203&geocode=&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=18&sll=35.97472,-79.913317&sspn=0.003529,0.006968&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=18

See the legend down there? That's how far 100 feet is. Now multiply that by nine times. That's how far away he was.

So he was only 880 feet away (ish) when she started the turn? or 880 + (176*5) = 1760 feet?

Both of those seem like reasonable distances to see a car coming and stop

"My take on this, seeing as we don't have very much information:

-If his siren was on, it's the fault of the people pulling out in front of him. Still sad that people died, though.

-If he just had his lights on without the siren, then that was incredibly unsafe and we (probably) could not have expected the other car to know he was coming. Mostly his fault, and he needs to face some punishment or reprimand for it, even if it's just being fired. At the very least, he should be fired in this case."

i'm sorry, please point out to me where i'm backpedaling anything...i claim that both the woman and the officer contributed to the accident and as such, both are at fault, regardless of who died

do you have evidence suggesting that i've said it's definitely the fault of one and not of the other? or are you just talking out of your ass? yeah, that's what i thought

Quote :
"i don't think the specifics of an intersection should matter."

i disagree with you 100%...you absolutely cannot make a set of laws that covers EVERY situation and so you have to create a set that covers the majority and leaves room for human judgment

since human judgment (and laws, for that matter) can be flawed, accidents happen...a woman who didn't look before turning and an officer that didn't check his speed like he should have are not the same thing as a guy who pulls out a gun and shoots someone in the face, even if the result is the same

you know, i have been accused of seeing things in black and white before, but some of you jackasses really take the cake

Reasonable distance to see a car? Sure.

Does the average motorist have any fucking idea what a car traveling 120mph looks like and how fast it's going to reach you? Obviously not.

With that mentality, I should be able to easily hit a 105mph fastball as easily as a 45mph fastball.

Because... depth perception!

I've been agreeing with you up until this point... but if someone sees the blue flashing lights coming at them, they shouldn't be turning out in front of it at all, regardless of how fast they think the police car is moving.

the math has been spelled out and you are wrong, there is a turn just 1000 ft away

the car was likely not visible when she made the turn

Yes, those are people trained to hit things moving that fast. The same way a state trooper is trained to travel at that speed.

Just like the average person could not hit a fastball, the average motorist can't anticipate a car speeding ridiculously fast.

I have played sports, and the reason you can't hit 100 mph balls is because you're not fast enough, a strength problem... not sure that that matters though

i think at the least he should get paid leave while they re-evaluate their policies.

in my own PERSONAL opinion i think differently. but since we've thrown out the word "reasonable" like 217 times, i think paid (and even unpaid) leave while they figure shit out is pretty damn reasonable. considering 2 people did die because of a speeding ticket. laws are flawed, remember (your broskie quag pointed that one out)? this one probably deserves some attention in light of this accident. which could have easily been prevented if the cop had been going slower.

You said yourself that it's a reasonable distance to see a car. If you see oncoming blue lights, even if they look far away, waiting for them to pass before turning into the intersection is a good idea. Probably not legally required(it might actually be legally required, but I don't care enough to look it up), but still a good idea.

Look, I still think the officer was at fault here for going 120 without a siren... or going 120 at all just to catch an 80mph speeder, for that matter.
