It looks like we're going to be getting a Havanese in the near future:

Not my first choice in dog but I'm not going to bitch about a free dog Anyone else owned one of these?

American Hairless Terrier - although everyone tells me that's dumb and they just look like large rats. But it doesn't shed at all, which is a plus.

A friend of mine has one of these (the dog is ~1 year old), and it seems like the standard little dog to me. He has a lot of personality (more so than other small breeds I've been around), and likes to get into everything (which is the puppy in him I'm sure).

They absolutely love him, and even though I'm one of those people who think they'd never own a small dog, he's done a lot to change my view on that.

^^ Yeah the mother and father of this litter are pretty good dogs so I'm hoping it will work out well. We live in an apartment right now so a smaller dog is probably a better choice anyway.

They also named him "Bonecrusher," even though he's all of 3 or 4 pounds-complete with a skull and crossbones little ID tag. (they call him "bo" normally)

I love dogs, and my mutt is my fave...but I have a big soft spot for English Springer Spaniels. It's the breed of the dog we had growing up. She was liver and white named Molly

She was a great, great dog.

A friend of mine in elementary school have a Springer Spaniel. I liked the dog until it when Kujo and bit my hand. Then it went and attacked my friend when she was walking it a few days later. Her parents "brought it to a farm" the next day.

That's strange for a springer. They are usually great family dogs. Soft mouth like a lab, but a thicker coat better for cold water retrieving.

I'd agree cockers...but def not my experience with springers.

Any dog can bite though, and not all dogs will like all other dogs or people. Much like people. We can't all get along!

Not sure what pugs you have owned but pugs are pretty energetic, especially if their owners enjoy playing with them. If they get ignored they will just turn into a dog that lays around all the time, but they are definitely playful little dogs.

That being said, they are awesome dogs and I am glad to own one currently

i would like to add old english sheepdogs

when i was in middle school and highschool i wanted one so bad. i read up on them. i learned everything you needed to know about them with the certainty that i was getting one the second i got my own place.

i ended up getting my penelope-- a great dane/ (mostly) pit mix who was going to be put the sleep the day after i got her
that being said i highly endorse pit bulls....never met one that wasnt incredibly sweet...

laastly...i cannot forget my baby.
i normally am not a proponent for little dogs, biut i lived in a teeny weeny apartment by myself and really wanted a watchdog....i ended up with carter (funny thing-the only reason i even got her personally was because she ripped the hem of my pants the very first time i met her...and i thought-what a spunky little shit)
and now im freaking in love with her....

a shih tzu!!!

yea if you're going to get a small dog, shih tzus are the way to go. they are definitely the least annoying of the small breeds in my experience. My dog growing up was a shih tzu they're sturdy little fuckers for their size.

and they don't shed! definite plus. however they are not the brightest of the breeds

I love so many types of dogs that it's almost easier naming the types of dogs I don't like:

- I don't like small dogs. Don't want to offend...they can be cute and fun to play with for a little while, but I'd never want to own one. I want a decent sized dog I can roll around with. If I want something that small, I'd get a cat, and I don't want a cat.

- I don't like any type of spaniel or poodle. Also don't like chows (who likes chows?? they majority if them are fucking evil and they aren't even good looking/cute).

As for the dogs I like:

I love strong, chiseled dogs. So I really like boxers and pit bulls. I also like rottweilers and bull dogs. I also like huge dogs. One of my friends has a 180lb St. Bernard...and it is AWESOME. I like Great Danes and Bull Mastiffs as well. Big dogs can be so gentle, and those are just awesome. Same goes for German Shepherds. Oh...almost forgot the Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Those dogs are amazing. Dated a woman with one, and he was awesome.

I like the lean athletic dogs too. My ex-roommate has a sweet german short-haired pointer. I have lots of friends with weimaraners and vizlas, and they're just beautiful dogs that like to run around. I'm active, so I want my dog to be active.

I also like border collies because they are so intelligent and I would like to teach them to do crazy shit with frisbees.

I've also recently fallen in love with the Tamascan Wolfdogs only because NC State finally got a live mascot and I've been searching them on the internet and they seem awesome.

When I'm finally ready to get a dog, if I don't get a mutt from the pound, I'll chose from one of the following three: boxer, tamascan, or rhodesian.

me too, my dog is a pit with some boxer in her and she is pretty much sculpted, lean and muscular. I love watching her run because she's built like a midget, normal sized torso but tiny legs. It's funny but its awesome, she hauls ass

i like all dogs, really. or ALMOST all dogs. i don't prefer the little yappy ones, but i still like them

right now i have a hound/lab/probably pitt or boxer mix and she's really really REALLY sweet.

but if i get another dog in the near future i want a boston terrier. i LOVE boston terriers. love love love.

but honestly, i'm the person who makes my boyfriend stop on the side of the road to rescue every stray dog/cat in sight so really, i love all dogs.

I'll say miniature poodle and miniature schnauzer, cause that's what my dogs are.

I'm also partial to Weimaraners and Westies. Also Cockapoos if hybrids count.

Though to be honest, I haven't really ever met a dog I haven't liked.

I am partial to mixed breeds for a number of reasons

reason#1 -Bailey. my 9 yr old mixed breed & #2 Grace - shar pei mix

reason #3 - Tyson - beagle/chi mix

We adopted a 4 yr old yellow lab in April. She's a retired seeing eye dog (she didn't like her job) and is an amazing dog!! My husband always wanted a lab, I wasn't ready for a puppy so she was a great fit. super smart, great with my daughter and we can take her anywhere.

Favorite breeds:
German Shepherds - I grew up with a longcoated GSD.
She looked a lot like this one (she was from a working line - police/service). gorgeous dog

Golden Retrievers

Labrador Retrievers - Lyla

Bernese Mountain Dog

Australian Shepherd
Irish Wolfhound

I really don't care so much about breeds, I just like a dog that has the right kind of personality. I thought I wanted a big dog, but ended up pulling a puppy out of a ditch on my way back from the shelter one day, turned out to be a remarkable dog. I'm kinda partial to dogs that were mistreated earlier in life, but that's just because that's the way both of my dogs have been. First was a stray collie that turned into the biggest sweetheart, second is a stray that everyone falls in love with.
