have you tried the NFL training one?" |
They don't have the NFL stuff for Xbox yet, but they're releasing a patch in Feb to fix some detection bugs and long load times, maybe after that they'll start adding more DLC.
They added a Nike Low Impact 3 week program so far but thats it. The regular programs are a cardio starter program and a 9 week total body program that pretty much works everything. Three different intensity levels with reps and intervals and you can make custom workouts from the probably 70-some exercises available.
And yeah, I hate real running, although sometimes in the game it's just running in place racing people on the screen. The killer cardio stuff is really the high knees and squat jump variations.
I love the stats though, here's my last workout, the cliff about 1/3 in was when the heart monitor went wonky and i had to adjust it

in my defense we've only played it twice, lol
We really need to play it more but its so much easier to just plop down and watch netflix. Maybe once it stats getting warmer we will bust out the kinect more often2/1/2011 9:21:36 PM |

It looks like they're probably gonna roll out the big February patch for EA Sports Active 2 pretty soon, I just noticed a lot of the bugs on the website have been fixed, and several new tabs related to your workouts and profile have been added to make it a more complete interface. Yes, more details haha.
I think they have been holding off on releasing DLC until after this patch because one program was up in the store for a day and then disappeared, I'm excited because the detection already isn't bad as long as you understand what the kinect is looking for, and are aware of the area you have to stay in, and that is one of the things they were supposed to address.
It definitely ramps up the workout intensity over the weeks, I'm getting a lot more back to back to back cardio routines and I've noticed I can power through a lot of the really draining jump-squat type exercises more than before, and they're starting to throw in ab work and planks to finish out.

The Kinect for Windows SDK beta launches Thursday via Channel9 event.
There is already voting for the next round of Kinect hack projects that make it into Kinect Labs (odds on favorite is "Big Keyboard" that turns your floor into the toy FAO Schwarz keyboard in the movie Big). 6/15/2011 5:51:35 PM |

Anyone pick up Child of Eden? It's overpriced IMO ($50 for a game that can be finished in 90 minutes, literally), but it's supposed to be the most immersive Kinect game yet. 6/15/2011 5:58:29 PM |

I think a game like Myst would be fun on the Kinect. No crazy action...just solving puzzles in an immersive storyline. 6/16/2011 9:39:55 AM |

Anybody heard much about UFC: Personal Trainer? Looks like a decent fitness program that might be a bit more challenging than the usual fluff games out there. Really the detection, responsiveness and interface are going to be the deciding factors, might be a good supplement to krav maga classes just for general targeted fitness. 6/26/2011 6:50:52 PM |
WolfAce All American 6458 Posts user info edit post |
Well I broke down and bought UFC Personal Trainer on a gamble and I've only played through the fitness test and one workout but I love it so far. Right off the bat, I'm doing a military standard-style fitness test, max situps, max pushups, then cardio followed by a heart rate reading to determine the rep counts and level of difficulty I'm starting on.
Then the workout, decent stretching, followed by good old calisthenics, with a UFC flair to it. Instead of boring froo froo jumping back and forth I'm throwing punches, overhead hammer fists, and all out ground pounding. (I'd love to pick up a kick shield pad and actually beat the shit out of the floor next time too) Common exercises like pushups, (the best groundwork detection of any kinect fitness game to date) and tricep extensions were also included in my first workout. After that, I tried the exercises for fun and wailed on a virtual heavy bag with punches, knees, kicks, and elbows for a couple minutes straight.
The big dogs haven't weighed in yet, but reviews so far have been very positive aside from a launch day server crash online that was causing some lag, since been resolved completely.

Now it sure as hell isn't going to make you a UFC fighter, but its a great Kinect fitness game for those quick sessions at home where you don't feel like going to a gym but still want to let out some rage and aggression and take a decent beating with instructors that will actually give you shit if you don't meet the target reps they set. (Yes a fitness game that isn't all flowers and encouragement, straight up told me I failed and booed when I came up one shy on pushups)

It's definitely my favorite so far and definitely has the most OOHRAH to it, owning EA Sports Active 2 and having played both the demos for Your Shape and Biggest Loser fitness games to compare.
One word of advice, you'd better have a good 6-10 ft of distance from the sensor to be in the best detection area, I'm looking to get that adapter for kinect that uses lenses to shorten the necessary range when it's available here.

That's because Your Shape blows, I'd give it a rental to gauge your interest. I'm just trying to keep things varied and I love technology lol. 6/30/2011 10:37:53 PM |

Another thing with Your Shape was it was highly dependent on leg movements, and I wasn't that comfortable doing kicks and shit with my knee (surgery). My favorite part was the Knockout with the punching though...I guess this does a lot of combat type shit? 6/30/2011 10:46:23 PM |

Yeah there are several different trainers and supposedly they'll bring basic combatives and some combos from their respective martial arts backgrounds, but I have only done one quick upper body workout as of yet 7/1/2011 5:50:37 AM |

^honestly, how is the lag when you're punching, kicking, etc? i'd like this game but couldn't stand it if it is too laggy and slow to capture my motions. 7/1/2011 8:13:03 PM |

^^It's pretty quick, if I'm throwing a quick jab it usually registers after 'impact' as my fist is traveling backward, but before it returns to a guard position. I would say quarter second or less but I don't really have a good way to gauge that. 7/1/2011 11:46:56 PM |

I'd assume that we can just hook up the Xbox Kinect to the USB drive, download some sketchy drivers and go to town 1/10/2012 4:21:59 PM |
